Do Tell: What Was Your Most Memorable Valentine's Day?
Feb 14 2008 - 8:00am Valentine's Day — you either love it or hate, and we all know your relationship status has a lot to do with it! The pressure to be coupled up is bad enough as it is, but the stress of making everything perfect for your one and only is the icing on the cake. I often hear people say they got into their worst arguments with their significant other on Valentine's Day, and it makes perfect sense why.

Its nothing too special, but an ex of mines arranged for us to go to the a "nice" hotel (I used that word loosely). He bought a dozen yellow roses (one of my favorite flowers) and bought some champange.. Nothing else needs to be told. LOL

    Shh....

Mine is memorable but not in a good way. Sticking out tongue In college, I was dating this guy who I guess I was "just not that into". He pulled out his camping equipment and cooked me a whole homemade meal in his dorm room, lit candles, bought me flowers and made me a mix tape with all these "special" songs. I bought him a coffee mug with a dalmation on it (he was a wild firefighter during the summers). I felt horrible and it was really kind of awkward. Could the huge gap between our emotions have been any clearer!?

My most memorable Valentine's Day was during a period of time when I was dateless and sexless for a while. I was coming off a long-relationship and was really concentrating on school. As a joke I made sugar cookies with lemon frosting that year with broken heart and dagger shapes for friends. I mailed them in packages that folks got before the 14th. V-day was insane, friends inundated me with kind gestures. I was taken to breakfast, a farmer's market, dinner, drinks, and a show by different people. It was a hell of fun and unexpected day. Some still ask for dagger valentines now.

Every Valentines Day with my current bf is great. We are going on five together this year.

I know how cheesy that sounds, but we make our own traditions and it's kind of fun. Like this morning, we made sure to get up at 5 a.m. and make our fav. breakfast together and give each other the homemade cards. He hid a package of m&ms in my backpack, and I put a can of Arizona sweet tea in his car. And later, he is making tuna noodle cass., and I will make the dessert (angle food cup cakes with real strawberry frosting and red sugar sprinkles).

last year. we both had the same idea to come home early and decorate and a cook a nice meal. we both lied to each other and ended up getting home at the same time. it was our first valentine's day and he wanted to impress me so he politely asked me to get lost for a couple of hours. i came home to candles all over, wine, dinner ready and my guy all dressed up for me. it was the sweetest thing ever. i think his gift for me helped me make up my mind that he was the only guy for me: he bought me a harness and leash for my cat as well as a cat training book. he remembered a random conversation we had where i told him i wanted to teach one of my kitties to walk on a leash. he's amazing.

My boyfriend and I had been dating for a few weeks. I got home from work and he had lit candles all over my apartment, had lots of roses and a record he had bought for me with the sweetest note. Then I took him out to a really great dinner at this restaurant and had strawberry champagne sorbet for dessert. Definitely the best Valentine's Day yet.

The next year he got too drunk early on in the day with his stupid guy friends and didn't come home until super late, but last year he took me out to a super fancy dinner. This year he won't be in town but I'll manage. :\

When my boyfriend surprised me with a dozen red roses, two different cards, & a big heart shaped cake that he had baked & decorated all by himself. He didn't have any heart shaped pans, so he had to cut the shapes out & put them together. I know, it's not that hard to do, but it was the first cake he had ever baked & it was pretty good! No other boyfriend had ever gone through all that trouble.

    He is now my husband!

Well, memorable, but not in a good way- my dad was supposed to pick me up from work one Valentine's day when I was 17, but he was 3 and a half hours late. Come to find out my mom had been thrown off her horse and her shoulder and arm were really mangled badly. He'd spent Valentine's day in the hospital- I felt so bad for both of them.

I'm not really into Valentines Day in a romantic way, so no guy have ever done anything special.

But, my MOM always made it a special occasion. I realize now she would get up early on Valentines Day, go the store, and pick up flowers. She'd wake me with a small bouquet of flowers, and a small heart girl (I still have black socks with little red hearts that she gave me when I was 12). She would do the same for my brother, minus the flowers. She'd then make us breakfast, and send us off to school (or to the living room, in my brother's case - very younger brother). When I would get home, she's give me a heart shaped cookie and a kiss. Every Valentines Day, she would tell my brother and I, "You are my greatest loves," and would quote the book Love You Forever, "I'll love you forever. I'll like you for always. As long as I'm living, my babies you'll be."

She was wonderful. She was right in line for the Best Mother Ever Award. You know, that is way better than any romantic thing a guy could do for you on V-Day!

Yeah, OK, actually, now that I think about it, I think my most memorable was in 4th grade. This boy who had a major crush on me gave everyone one of those store-bought cards but made a special one out of colored paper for me and said "Would You Be My Valentine?" Our class decorated heart-shaped sugar cookies and everyone got to make 2, and he gave one of his to me...decorated in pink frosting covered with Red Hots. OH! Young love...haha Sticking out tongue

OK so ladies I have to ask a question. Need some advice.
Would you be pissed if your live-in bf of 4 years never gave you a thing for valentines, and never even acknowledged that it WAS valentines??
My bf is against valentines day. He thinks it is WAY too commercialized and pushy....people feel like they are forced to go out and get something, on that exact day. He says you show it all year round, so why should we buy into another wal mart holiday.

SO would you be upset if he completely ignored it?

I don't know, missyd--he has a point about the commercialization, but he should do at least something small, even if it is free. After all, he has to know that you'll feel lonely and upset if you watch everyone else get gifts and "I love yous" while he insists that he shows it year-round.

In high school, my bf made my Valentines especially memorable. We could not drive and didnt have much money. He set up his basement like a little restaurant a sweet checkered table cloth and a candle. He ordered in my favorite pasta dish. It was so nice. I felt so special!. This Valentines Day I am looking forward to a really good meal out to a place where I can dress so casual and comfy after a long day at work, then I wanna watch LOST. I know it sounds not too exciting. Honestly, I could'nt ask for anything better!

Mine was miderm week of my second-to-last quarter of college. My boyfriend and I had just started dating in November, so I didn't expect much. In fact, I had told him I was unavailable because I had to study. He unexpectedly showed up at my house that night with all of my favorite foods- king crab legs, yummy side dishes, etc. and cooked me dinner while I studied. Then he brought out my favorite sweets for dessert- Snickers ice cream bars and chocolate-covered strawberries. After we were done eating, he sat on the couch and watched King Kong, the movie we saw on our first date, while I got back to my schoolwork. It was priceless. Two years later, we're still going strong!

missyd - My husband and I don't celebrate Valentine's Day at all. it's a BS holiday. What does it really mean that your man will do what the American Association of Advertisers tells him to do!? If he is thoughtful and does romantic things for you on occasion, then let Valentine's Day go.
