Five Things to Do When You Need a Pick-Me-Up

Every so often we can feel down on our luck. Maybe it's just a passing mood or maybe it's a particularly bad string of events, but sometimes in this hectic life we just need a pick-me-up. Here are some of my quick mood boosters when the going gets tough. Check them out and see if you agree!

Have a latte! The simplicity of a good espresso drink cannot be beat. Pair it with a walk outside and you have a cheap pick-me-up that's good for a dreary afternoon.
Dine on popcorn and Red Vines. I have a thing for movie-theater treats, and I always feel better after a couple hours of munching and a light-hearted movie.
Play with a puppy. I'm a sucker for pups, but most of the time I can't actually get to one when I need one. Fortunately, puppy pics or videos usually do the trick. So when I'm in a sour mood, but stuck behind my computer, I'll opt for a good 10 minutes of puppy viewing!

Enjoy a chocolate-chip cookie. What's better than the smell of homemade cookies? Eating homemade cookies, of course! I love to get my bake on when I'm gloomy. Cookies and milk do a mood good.
Get active. I'm going to be honest with you, I don't love to work out (sorry, Fit!), but I do love how I feel afterwards. If I can drag my behind out the door, I'm sure to feel better when I get back home.

Group Therapy: I need a pick-me-up!

I've been feeling depressed lately. My husband and I recently separated, and I currently have our young children. All around, we are broke. After paying the bills, I literally have about $25 left for the week which all goes to groceries. Lately, I've been really down. I'm feeling really burnt out, with the kids and the bills and life. I'm used to retail therapy when I'm blue, even if it's only a few dollars on a new shirt or a new book or an ice cream cone, whatever. I've always been very thrifty, never spending outrageous amounts of money but even now I can't afford to take away $2 from the weekly budget. I used to enjoy taking the kids to the park but lately as it seems one of my only options, it's been more of a chore than anything.

Any ideas to get me out of this funky mood?

Ask a Southern Belle: Am I Paranoid or Is He Cheating on Me?

Today's Question:

I have been in a relationship with this guy for three-and-a-half years. For the most part, our relationship has been pretty good. However, over the past five or six months, I have developed a fear of him cheating on me. Ironically, I never had this feeling at any earlier time in our relationship.

I have come to believe that the reason I have developed this fear is because a couple of times over the past few months, I have caught him lying to me about drinking with his guy friends and dipping (two things that he knows I don't approve of). He told me that the reason he lied about those things is because he didn't want me to be upset with him. Since he lied to me about those things, I feel like he might be lying to me about cheating.

Fortunately, he has never given me any reason to think that he is cheating, and he tells me all the time that he loves me so much and that I am the person he wants to spend the rest of his life with. Even though he tells me all of these sweet things, I still don't trust him and I often accuse him of going behind my back with other girls. He reassures me he would never do that and often becomes very upset that I would think he would hurt me like that. It seems like all day, every day, I constantly think about what he is doing, who he is with, etc. I have literally made myself sick from worrying so much and I am afraid it is going to cost me my health and relationship. I don't know what to do!

Well bless your heart!

When I was a young woman, I heard a story about a little girl walking toward a bridge. She encountered a snake who asked for her help in crossing the river. The girl demurred, saying, “You are a snake; you will bite me.” The snake told a sad story about being misunderstood and promised to do no harm. The trusting girl picked up the snake and carried him across the bridge, whereupon he bit her. She cried out, “You promised you would not hurt me! Why? Why?” As the snake slithered away, he said, “You knew what I was when you picked me up.”

In light of this little tale, ask yourself a couple of questions. Have you had this fear of being cheated on with other boyfriends? If so, perhaps you are sabotaging this relationship with your accusations. Or, have you picked other guys whose bad habits you immediately tried to fix? Why, after three-and-a-half years, do you not have trust in this man?

People, as snakes, rarely change, no matter how much their partners want it. The question of trust may only be in your mind, but if you cannot trust this guy after three-and-a-half years and he is still doing things of which you do not approve, one of you might want to slither away.

Handle This: He Has a Secret Fetish

Group Therapy: My Boyfriend Won't Come to My House

I've been dating my current boyfriend for about six months. We didn't make the relationship official until I was home from college for the summer. We have a happy relationship, but he doesn't come over to my house! Initially we agreed that his place was better because we have more privacy there. I visited him whenever I came home for the weekend, which was maybe three or four times during the semester.

However, since summer started I have been making the 40 minute drive to his house three days a week to sleep over, while he's only been to my house a total of three times since I met him. I brought the issue up with him a few weeks ago. He apologized, saying that he felt really bad that I was upset and that he thought we were in agreement that his place worked out better. He also claims that it's more awkward at my house because everyone is usually home when he comes over (although they never bother us, and we certainly have enough privacy).

I told him that it's unfair for me to always have to drive to see him, and that I feel just as awkward in his house because his family is always there too. Since then he has driven to my house to pick me up and taken me to his house a few times, but he is always so reluctant to set foot inside my house. What can I do to make things less awkward for him?

Folks are always trying to outwit the drunk driving laws in this country, drinking until they've drunk the house dry and have to journey to the market for a 24-pack pick-me-up. When stumbling doesn't get them very far, their hammered judgment tells them to drive a golf cart instead. Or, even better, to drive a motorized cooler down the road. (But guess what?
