I Forgot to Take my Birth Control Pill, What Should I Do?

One of the complaints I hear from women about the Pill is that they have a hard time remembering to take it everyday. So what happens if you forget?

Being even 12 hours late taking your birth control pill could increase your chances of getting pregnant. If you miss any of the first 21 pills in your pack, you need to use a backup method of birth control (condoms) until you have taken 7 consecutive days of pills.

If you miss 1 pill, take it as soon as you remember. Take your next pill at the regular time.
If you realize when taking your pill that you skipped 1, take the pill you skipped AND the new 1 together. It's okay to take 2 pills at once.
If you miss 2 pills, take 2 pills each day for the next two days, and then go back to 1 pill each day at your usual time. You could get pregnant if you have unprotected sex for the next 7 days, so make sure to use a backup method.
If you forgot to take 1 pill during the 3rd week of your pill pack, finish the pills for that week, skip the last week (inactive pills) and begin a new pack. Understand that you probably won't have another period until the 4th week of this new pill pack. Use a backup method of birth control until you have taken 7 consecutive days of pills.

If you forget 3 or more pills, call your doctor for advice. They may suggest to take one pill daily until Sunday and then start a new pack, or to discard the rest of the pill pack and start over with a new pack that same day. Be sure to use a back up method of birth control method each time you have sex because you are no longer protected against pregnancy. After you've had 7 days of pills, then you are protected against pregnancy.

Dear's Advice: It's always a good idea to talk to your doctor if you have any questions. If you think there could be a chance that you are pregnant (and you don't want to be), Emergency Contraception (Plan B) is always an option. It is available in many pharmacies over the counter without a prescription if you're over 18. Something that I have always found to be effective is to set the alarm on your cell phone or outlook calendar to remind you!

Are you a heavy packer or a light packer? If you're anything like me, you avoid checking luggage at all costs, which requires some serious skill when it comes to packing for a vacation. Since I am such a nervous Nelly about my personal belongings, I have mastered the art of packing a carry on, even leaving room for the extra 4 outfits and 2 handbags just in case of an emergency!

Choose a duffel bag verses a roller bag. Rollers have a hard casing and don't all fit in all overhead bins. Opt for a soft bag so you can maneuver it over head or under the seat in front of you
Have an idea as to what you want to bring on your trip before you start pulling clothes out of your closet. Last minute packing leads to over packing, so don't procrastinate
I always lay my clothes out the night before I am ready to pack, take inventory, and inevitably end up putting half of my clothing back in my closet
Pack neutral colors so you can re-wear your clothing and just change up your accessories to create a new look. Jewelry, handbags and scarves take up minimal room in your suitcase so load up on add ons
Always put pants, jeans, and sweaters on the bottom of your bag to create a foundation for your duffel
Roll your clothing. Not only will this method prevent wrinkles, but you are bound to be able to fit much more in your bag
Pack shoes in outside pockets if possible or pack them last, on top of all your clothing
Pack your undergarments in the crevices between your clothing. There is always extra room that is perfect for socks, bras and underwear. Another good tip is to pack socks or stockings inside your shoes
Wear your bulkiest clothing on the plane. Wear your coat and boots, sneakers and jackets, whatever would take up the most room in your bag
Toiletries can start to take up a lot of space and since the new law requires nothing over 3 oz to be carried on, make sure to buy all your necessities in travel sizes, and don't forget your plastic bag
Always carry your jewelry in your purse. In case your bag doesn't fit in the overhead bin, you never want to check jewelry or any important documents

Remember to check the weather before you start packing so you can be as prepared as possible wherever your destination may be. Hopefully these tips will help you travel lightly, but efficiently, without the annoyance of waiting in line at baggage claim. Safe travels!

I decided to do a little Summer cleaning this weekend and I realized something about myself - I'm a pack rat! I have no idea why I was holding onto this stuff, but I finally gave away clothes I've had since high school, old receipts, even a few mix tapes! I guess I've always been too afraid to give anything away in case I'll want it months from now. Are you the same way? Do you tend to hold onto unnecessary clutter?

It's "Boring Week" over at Everything Is Terrible, and they dug up a video described on YouTube as "the most boring video in the world." In it, a representative for Magellan travel products shows a couple how to pack. Your eyes may glaze over as quickly as theirs do as the mind-numbingly boring speaker expounds on a mind-numbingly boring topic. My curiosity got the better of me, so I had to watch. Let's just put it this way: it would really come in handy during my next bout of insomnia.

Five years may be a short prison sentence, but that's 36 years in cat time. Way too long for Peter Koenig, a German inmate who wants to see his mother while serving a five-year sentence for armed robbery. One small, furry problem, though. His deceased mother is reincarnated as a cat, or so he believes.
The (formerly) heat-packing Buddhist took his fight to court, demanding cat-visiting rights, but was turned down for being unable to "furnish proof that his deceased mother had been reborn in the cat.” In a misguided gesture the court suggested a compromise: he could always write her.

Funny as this story sounds, it seems to me that if you can have human visitors in prison, why not have furry, four-legged ones?

Power Jeans For Men: "For a Whiff of the Laborer"

Where to begin? This Wall Street Journal article earnestly extols the rise of denim. On men. In the workplace. Even men whose workplace is the highest public office - the presidency.

What packs the punch into a pair of power jeans? I'll let WSJ tell it:

Chosen well, jeans can suggest the wearer is confident and modern. Traditionally cut blue jeans carry a whiff of the laborer about them so denim on a leader suggests a willingness to roll up the sleeves and dig in.

A whiff of the laborer? So it's a populist thing? Yet it goes on to say that any old denim doth not a power jean make. Why not? Because it's all about fit and fade, tailoring and length. Men's Fashion Director Eric Jennings at Saks suggests men keep their power jeans "dark and straight." That means no acid wash (Russian President Medvedev), no skinny (Barack Obama), and no embroidery (Nicolas Sarkozy).

So how does a VIP know when to put the power jean to work? A high-end boutique says if you have to ask, it's a no go. Here's my advice: just don't do it.
