Nudists Worry About the Wrinkling of the Naked Movement

Annual pantsless subway rides are popular with 20-somethings today, but young people seem reluctant to fully commit to the nudist movement. In a report on the state of the nudist resort industry today, the Wall Street Journal explains clientele overwhelmingly includes graying, wrinkling baby boomers.

Membership to national nudist groups, including the Naturist Society, have been dropping or flat for years. In order to add younger bodies to their ranks, nudists hold reverse-strip poker nights (you start with your clothes off), 5K races, and music festivals like Nudestock, although organizers should call it Nudechella, if they really want to ditch the baby boomer image. Hoping to attract new members, the newly established Young Nudist and Naturists of America will also host a naked dinner party in an NYC loft.

The main problem facing nudist clubs, according to the article, is that they feel like retirement homes. But if they can reinvent themselves to appeal to younger people, would you consider embracing the freedom that comes with wearing no clothes at nudist resorts?

Ke$ha wrote Britney Spears's single "Till the World Ends" for her newest album, Femme Fatale, and she wants to celebrate by stripping down with the singer. Specifically, going skinny-dipping at a "dress-up-like-Ke$ha-or-Britney party":

"I have a small, salt-water pool that has laser beams in it and a stereo so you can be under water listening to music."

Yesterday, Improv Everywhere staged its annual No Pants Subway Ride in cities around the world. While it doesn't require getting completely naked, you do need to bring boldness and leave your self-consciousness at home.

Getting naked or mostly naked in public is the de facto expression of freedom and defiance. From a New Year's swim to Summer festivals, people love to strip down in the company of others. Would you join in for these occasions? (Warning: innocent yet semi-nude photos ahead!)

Aging Beauty: Older Women Get More Credit For Posing Nude

Posing nude probably has more to do with being a naked person than age. Jamie Lee Curtis bared it all for AARP at 52, Lauren Hutton did it at 61, and Helen Mirren went half-naked in New York magazine at 65 while pictures of her in a bikini floated around. So why does Kim Kardashian say she won't be posing nude, as she did for November's W magazine, now that she's two days short of turning 30? May she's just not old enough to be an inspiration yet?

A definite double standard exists, and for once it favors older women. Young women may strip for the camera because it's empowering, but they are often perceived as slutty, narcissistic attention-seekers; meanwhile, older women are cheered on by men, women, and the media.

Yet don't all women - young and old - do it for the same reason? To prove they can.

The actress said that choosing to bare it all was not about vanity but was her way of teaching younger women (especially her daughter) that our bodies should be celebrated. Jada's hope was to send a message of "freedom and self-acceptance" through her choice to bare it all.

Models Strip Against Climate Change - Love It or Leave It?

A few days ago, an International Day of Climate Action was put on by the global campaign 350.org. Figuring the public is more likely to pay attention to practically naked models than Al Gore (naked or not), the group put together a video of smiling models taking off their clothes because global warming makes them too hot. I'm already skeptical of naked activism, but I think this video is trying to appeal to people who like barely-clothed models. I think they might want to rethink their angle - if global warming causes beautiful people to strip, won't some people think that's a good thing?

Say What? Levi Johnston Lets It All Hang Out

His Playgirl shoot, slated for early November, will apparently leave nothing to the imagination: Johnston plans on doing full-frontal nudity for the spread.

Très Bizarre: Man Charged For Being Naked in His Kitchen

Spending more time around the house naked might be good for the planet, but it could also land you in jail. The state of Virginia has charged Eric Williamson, 29, with indecent exposure for hanging out nude in his own home.

Early Monday morning, around 5:30 a.m., a naked Eric was making a cup of Joe in his kitchen. At the same time, a woman and her 7-year-old boy happened to walk through Eric's front yard. She called the police, who quickly arrived on the scene and arrested Eric. The reporting officers must have given Eric a chance to get dressed, because he's wearing clothes in his mug shot.

The police say that Eric wanted the strangers to see him naked. If prosecutors can prove that, Eric might be sentenced to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine. Considering it was so early in the morning and still dark out, it seems unlikely that he was standing in his kitchen naked waiting for random passersby to catch a glimpse. I doubt Eric will be convicted, but he still must be pretty upset about the whole situation. Perhaps the lady cutting through his lawn should be the one facing the law!

Très Bizarre: Famillies Dressed in Naked Suits

Thanks to the website Awkward Family Photos, we all know how uncomfortable family portraits can be. But some families are willing to really embrace the awkward nature of a family photo by dressing up in hand-knit naked suits for the occasion.

San Francisco's public television channel recently caught up with artist Anna Maltz, the woman who makes the head-to-toe suits and then takes photos of people wearing them. (I wonder if she also made the suit Sacha Baron Cohen wore at the Berlin premiere of Bruno?)

Anna explains that she got her inspiration from original naked people Adam and Eve. The only downside to wearing the suit? Curious people often feel free to squeeze what they believe to be fake breasts, when they're actually squeezing the real breasts that lie beneath the suits! Would ever try one on for size?
