Famous Alphas vs. Betas: Who's Hotter?

Beta is the new alpha, haven't you heard? More specifically, beta males may make the better mate, since they aren't as likely to be as stressed out as the numero unos. But attraction isn't always a science, and there's still something about those alpha males, isn't there? In almost every famous dynamic duo there's a leader who calls the shots and his trusty companion. When it comes to these alpha/beta pairings, would you go for the second in command or the head honcho?

Study Finds Alpha Males Most Stressed, Beta May Be Better

A study of male baboons has found that being on the top is overrated. Field biologists looked at alpha male baboons and discovered that the alphas were the most stressed in their social group, and the lower in rank they got the less stressed they were. For humans, stress like this can cause health problems and make you less able to fight off disease, so being the top dog could cost you. Alpha male baboons may be stressed from the responsibilities of fending off enemies and watching over the females, while the No. 2 baboons, the beta males, get a lot of the perks of being high ranking without the stress of being alpha. One of the doctors involved in the study said betas do "pretty well for a long time, rather than very well for a short time."

If these findings ring true for humans, it may be better to be beta, at least in the long run. When it comes to guys you've been interested in, do you typically go for the head honcho or the second in command? Do nice betas finish last?

Are the Men in Your Life Cooking More?

According to the New York Post, more men in Manhattan are cooking at home. The story cites the Food Network, the recession, and a desire to impress females as reasons why more guys are putting on aprons and manning the stove. Some males even consider it a talent along the likes of being well-traveled or speaking two languages. While my dad has always been the head chef in my family, I would have to agree with the article. My older brother has recently developed an interest in cooking and jumps at the chance to help me in the kitchen! How about you?

Why Some Men Choose to Stay Child Free

Ted Cox got a vasectomy when he was 28. His mom cried, and some women won't date him, but the eldest child of seven is proud of his decision to remain childless. He says the desire to never have kids hit him in college, when he realized "instead of spending Saturday mornings watching Ted Jr. strike out at Little League games, I'd much rather watch those Japanese contestants humiliate themselves on TV."

For an article for the Good Men Project, Cox decided to look into why other men remain childless by choice. He found that while women face more stigma, both genders give the same reasons for not having kids. The top four reasons, which are the same among men and women, are the following:

"I love our life, our relationship, as it is, and having a child won't enhance it."
"I do not want to take on the responsibility of raising a child."
"I have no desire to have a child, no maternal or paternal instinct."
"I want to accomplish things in life that would be difficult if I were a parent."

Giada De Laurentiis Says Treat Men Like Kings or Else - Agree?

When it comes to traditional gender roles, celeb chef Giada De Laurentiis has the cooking part down. Giada, who's been with her husband since 1989, recently opened up about her marriage, telling Redbook magazine that she enjoys playing the role of doting wife and mother, and that in fact, it's crucial to a long-lasting relationship. Explaining that she tries to be the "young girl he met 20 years ago," she says:

"All men want to be treated like kings in a relationship, and I think if women don't indulge that sometimes, their men are likely to stray and look for someone who can give that to them."

It sounds to me like Giada subscribes to the same school as Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger, which suggests that letting "men be men" is the secret to a healthy relationship. And when it comes to fidelity, she also seems to think the cheated-on spouse shares some culpability if she doesn't give her husband enough attention. The sentiment is definitely a throwback, but Giada has the long relationship that implies it's working for her. What do you make of her thoughts?

Should You Settle For Second Best?

Remember that saying, "first the worst, second the best..." - just how true is that when it comes to our love lives?

It's not always a good thing to have a particular type because effectively you're shunning a large percentage of men who might be perfectly suitable. But the reality of this is that some women - myself included - are picky. Not in a "I know I can get any man so I get the liberty of choosing and dismissing" way, but more of a "I know what I like, so why sacrifice that?"

Some may call me shallow for admitting this, but physical appearance is important to me just as much as personality. There's no 30/70 or 40/60. It's 50/50 straight down the middle.

There are times when females will be in a situation where a guy comes along with a personality that you click with, but only on a friendship level. You're not exactly attracted physically, so should you write him off? Or pursue something with the hope that you'll eventually find an attraction? I think we all know what I always do.

Would Women Be Better Off Working Less?

In the Netherlands only 10 percent of women have full-time jobs, a rate that pales to the 75 percent of working American women employed full time and increasingly filling management roles. But as expat Jessica Olien points out in Slate this week, the Netherlands consistently ranks in the top five countries for women. How come?

Instead of fighting for equal wages, Dutch women want the right to cut hours without repercussions from employers. A working female journalist explains: "We look at the world of management - and it is a man's world - and we think, oh I could do that if I wanted. But I'd rather enjoy my life."

The UN looked into the situation, worried that Dutch women did not have the same access as men, and found that in fact, many women did not want to work more. As a result they have more time to exercise, garden, and enjoy time with their kids or friends. In the US, our work influences feelings of independence and self-worth. For many of us, the dialogue of women's liberation is closely linked to the ability to climb the career success ladder; yet Dutch society promotes the freedom to live a balanced life, and studies show that this type of freedom results in greater levels of happiness.

Perhaps Dutch women are OK with not fully participating in the labor market because they've long had freedom to work. Ever since a plague put women to work in the 14th century, Dutch women have been able to work outside the home. Some historians consider that the first feminist revolution. Mix that past with a social safety net, which frees you from concerns over college loans or health insurance, and you can actually choose to not work. Do you wish more women here had that choice?
