Dear Poll: Does Your Foreplay Include Making Out?

Quickies can be great fun, but I still have to say, I’m all for foreplay. Recently, however, I’ve had friends point out to me - both single ladies and coupled - that making out seems to be missing from their foreplay. They exchange a kiss or two, but then it’s on to other things. A full-on make-out session prior to getting it on might be a little much, but I think it’s good to incorporate a lot of passionate kisses into foreplay. Relationship or no, does your foreplay include making out?

Even in high school when getting a hickey was like wearing a badge of honor, I didn't like them. I love a steamy makeout session as much as the next girl, but not only do I find bruising unsexy, but I just don't really enjoy being nibbled on like that! Needless to say, I was totally shocked when my friend had one peeking out by her collarbone just the other day. I know she’s dating someone new, but still, I thought once you reach a certain age, hickeys were a thing of the past. I know I can’t remember the last time I had one, but when was the last time you were sporting a hickey?

Syphilis Rates on the Rise

There's been a lot of talk about STIs in the news lately, and unfortunately there's more. Studies from the US Centers For Disease Control and Prevention have shown that syphilis rates have increased for the seventh year in a row. There are 3.7 cases of this STI per 100,000 people.

Why is this such bad news? Although syphilis is a bacterial STI that can be treated with antibiotics, having syphilis can increase a person's risk for contracting and passing HIV.
What's worse is that the FDA says that when it comes to protection, condoms seem less effective against syphilis. Why? Because this STI is transmitted through minor cuts or abrasions in your skin or mucous membranes. Having sex with someone who has syphilis is a common way to get it yourself, but it can also be passed on through oral sex or regular kissing (scary, I know).

Dear's Advice: I know this probably makes you never want to go on a date again, but it's not the end of the world. The best thing to do is get tested with your partner for all STIs before becoming intimate (even before making out). If your partner doesn't understand and won't do it, you might want to reconsider your relationship.

Kissing Reduces Stress

It was great news when we learned that sex can reduce stress, but it turns out there's no need to get naked in order to ease your mind or your troubles - recent research shows that kissing is also a stress-reliever. When couples were asked to smooch for 15 minutes, there was a decrease in levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Other couples who were asked to just hold hands, also had a decrease in cortisol, but kissing was much more effective.

The study also discovered that guys prefer sloppier kisses, which allows testosterone in his saliva to transfer to his partner as testosterone increases the sex drive in both men and women. So if you're having issues with your job, your sister, your roommate, or your finances, a little make-out or love-making session may be just the thing you need!

One benefit to being single on New Year's Eve is that you could end up getting a midnight kiss from an alluring stranger. Now let's imagine your NYE party is inhabited by celebs. It's no secret that I have a huge crush on Ben Affleck, so if we happened to be at the same New Year's party, I would make sure to be right next to him at the stroke of midnight in hopes that he'd be my New Year's kiss! Since there certainly isn't a shortage of good looking men in Hollywood, what I want to know is, what celebrity would you want to kiss at midnight on Dec. 31?

Stubble can be painful if it's short, so tell your man to go easy on the kissing if he is in the midst of growing out his beard
Remember the longer his beard, the softer it gets so hang in there
Be sure to moisturize. If your face is already dry, his stubble will irritate your skin even more - so stay hydrated and moisturized
If you do get whisker burn, soothe it with aloe just as you would a sunburn or use a healing ointment like Aquaphor to heal your dry and irritated skin - it's a miracle worker!
If you're with someone that likes to keep his beard short and scruffy but you can't get used to it, he is going to have to weigh his options!

Good Idea or Bad Idea: PDA

While they were in the privacy of their exclusive resort, they were technically still in public, so it got me thinking about PDA. While it is nice to show the person you love affection, some people get very uncomfortable with public displays of affection. So how do you feel about this taboo topic? Do You Ever Just Make Out Anymore?

I assume that since you are a Dear Sugar reader, you have a few relationships under your belt. I'm sure we've all gotten through the awkward and exciting experience of going from first base to all the way to home.

While going all the way is great, it seems like after you've done the deed for the first time, every time you get intimate after that it always leads to sex. You start off kissing and move onto other acts of foreplay, but it always ends up the same way. While I'd be happy with that outcome most of the time, whatever happened to good-old makeout sessions? I have such fond memories of French kissing on a guy's couch for hours and leaving it at that. It was so much fun, so exciting, and so innocent.

So I was wondering if you guys ever just make out anymore? Do you think it's possible to stick to first base after you've already hit a home run in the relationship? Or do you think that kissing always leads sex?

Domestic Violence Linked to Football Losses

Sitting around with the family watching football is a favored Thanksgiving tradition. But new research reveals that football spectating is not always pleasant: losses have a statistical link to a rise in domestic violence. The study, which matched 12 years worth of team records with local domestic violence rates, suggests that a painful loss can trigger moments of anger in fans, causing them to lash out. Here are some of the findings:

When a team favored to win loses, there is an eight percent increase in intimate partner violence in the hometown state (the study only looked at states with one team).
The increase in violence comes in the hours immediately following the loss.
When the loss is against a traditional rival, the spike in violence doubles.
The rate spike also doubles following losses in games with a lot of turnovers and penalties.

But don't call for a ban on football quite yet - the experts reasonably point out that emotional games might just set off violence that would otherwise happen later. So while this information enlightens us about occasions that put women at higher risk of suffering domestic violence, it doesn't exactly tell us more about how to address the root causes. What do you make of it?
