Do Tell: Do You Consider Yourself Lucky?

Happy St. Patty's Day, everyone! Since the four-leaf clover is one of this holiday's mascots, I thought it'd be a good time to talk about luck. While luck is really just triumph or failure determined by chance, it seems as though some people have it on their side and some don't. There are those who are typically lucky in love, lucky in their career, and lucky when it comes to taking risks, but then there are those who always seem to get the short end of the stick. Of course we all have our good days and our bad, but tell me, do you consider yourself to be lucky?

Jennifer Aniston sat down with her good friend Oprah yesterday to talk about her December Vogue article, her new movie, and of course, her love life. She went on to squash some of the never-ending rumors, but she also voluntarily stated that she considers herself to be lucky in love, even though it may not look how it's supposed to!

Love is multifaceted and while it's easier for some to find than others, I do think there are certain people that just get lucky in that way. Are you one of them?

He Doesn't Seem to Listen? Blame His Brain

I've been lucky to have boyfriends who didn't just love talking like I do, but who were good listeners, too. Maybe they were in the minority, or maybe they worked hard to overcome what many scientists say is a male brain hardwired to keep conversation short and informational.

Compared to women's brains, researchers conclude that men's brains not only have fewer verbal centers, but their brains produce less serotonin and oxytocin. The former aids in calming a person down and the latter with bonding.

Sociolinguist Deborah Tannen's fascinating book You Just Don't Understand: Men and Women in Conversation, focused on how men and women are socialized to have different conversational styles. Women, she argued, use talk to connect emotionally to another person, while men use conversation to impart knowledge. So whether we look to biology or society for the differences in men and women's conversational styles, the differences seem to be there. How can we bridge the gap? Psychotherapist Robi Ludwig has some tips. For men, she suggests that they remind themselves that although they think women talk too much, take too long to get to the point, or don't allow for lulls in conversation, that women are talking to connect to them, so they should listen to show emotional support. Women don't necessarily want you to solve the problems they're telling you about - just listen. And just because you're not fascinated with what she's saying, she probably listens to a lot of stuff with rapt attention about which she couldn't care less.

And women? Pay attention to timing. Don't bring things up when he's trying to unwind, try to keep it short and to the point (this would be impossible for me!), and make sure he's listening by pausing and maintaining eye contact. Or, you could use a strategy some of my female friends have taken: go to your female friends if you have something you really want someone to listen to!

Say What? Shakira's Hips Don't Lie

- Shakira, in the latest issue of Rolling Stone, about feeling her biological clock ticking. You won't see her get married any time soon, though. She claims she'll never get married, even though she's been with her beau for nine years. What I'd love to hear her explain is what the following lyrics from "Wherever, Wherever" mean: "Lucky that my breasts are small and humble/So you don't confuse them with mountains." I may not confuse them with mountains, but I am confused!

Say What? Brad Pitt Says True Love Comes Twice

"Man, I resent people telling others how to live! It drives me mental! Just the other night, I heard this TV reverend say that Angie and I were setting a bad example because we were living out of wedlock, and people should not be duped by us! It made me laugh. What damn right does anyone have to tell someone else how to live if they're not hurting anyone? How many times do you think real love comes to someone in a lifetime? If you're lucky, maybe two or three."

Brad's got a point: are we really worried that people are making important decisions about their lives (and love lives) based blindly on what the Jolie-Pitts are doing? Interesting that he says real love comes maybe two or three times in a lifetime - do you agree?

Obama in Golden State as Fans Camp Out For Golden Tickets

President Obama is on his first presidential trip to the Golden State today, where he held a town hall meeting. Everyday Californians talked about their lost jobs and financial anxiety. The trip is reminiscent of the campaign trail, as at least one supporter shouted "I love you Barack!" But this time Obama isn't trying to win votes. He wants support for his complex mutibillion dollar budget and pricey plan to fix the economy.

After his events today, the President will hop over to Jay Leno's guest chair. He will be the first sitting president to appear on the show, and you better believe Americans want to witness that history. Last night, people camped out with sleeping bags and blankets, hoping to be among the lucky few to get tickets to the Late Show.

I don't think I've ever shared with you my admiration for Dr. Drew Pinsky, but I've got to say, he's one of my favorite television personalities - and let's be honest, he's pretty sexy too! While he is a physician first, he's made his expertise available to the public via Loveline, Celebrity Rehab, and now Sober House. His approach to helping people is the perfect combination of compassion and tough love, and I was lucky enough to sit down and talk with him about his new project, Sex . . . With Mom and Dad, where Dr. Drew helps families in need of guidance when it comes to the "taboo topic of sex."

In this two-part interview, you'll get to hear his opinion on sex, addiction, relationships, and how the world of dating has changed over the years. Tune in tomorrow for part two.

Why is it so important to talk to kids about sex?

There are multiple reasons. One, it gives parents a chance to shape their behavior and to communicate their values. Number two is, it diminishes the secrecy in a family system, which is always a bad thing. And ultimately, my hope is it'll give parents a chance to help kids examine how deeply embedded sexuality is in their emotional lives, and I think most parents are kind of sensitive to that.

Is it harder for you to talk to the kids or their parents about sex?

It's so different, it's pretty equal, they each have their own challenges. Sometimes it's the parents, when they're so rigid and resistant - I've got to say - sometimes it's the parents. Because the kids usually want to have the conversation, it's just awkward; they don't know how to initiate it, and we really help them break the ice.

What is the best piece of advice you received as a kid about sex?

I didn't receive any guidance or direction when I was a kid, and it was a very confusing time. After I became a physician, it became something I was attuned to. When I had an opportunity to do a radio show, the way I crafted the radio show was, I wished there was a place like that for me to go as a kid. Just having someplace to go with this is what I've always wanted to create for kids.

Since 32 percent of you felt Valentine's Day was a good day to meet other singles, something tells me a few of you got lucky last weekend! So if you're about to embark on a first date with a new potential love interest, you might want to check out a few of my dating suggestions. If you have any dos or don'ts to add, please feel free to share them with us in the comments below!

Do keep an open mind. Do be yourself - remember, he liked you for a reason the first time you met! Do dress to impress. Do listen intently, and make sure to ask questions that will help you get to know him better. Do order foods that agree with you. Do end the night with a kiss - if you like him, of course!	Don't let your nerves get the best of you. Don't overdress, show too much cleavage, or wear something too tight or too short. Don't spend too much time (if any at all) talking about your past relationships. Don't use or check your cell phone - just be in the moment. Don't forget your manners. Don't drink too much!
