Ladies, It's Time to Pop the Question!

Supposedly an old British custom had it that women were allowed to propose on leap year day, today, February 29, and their object of affection wasn't allowed to turn to them down! Obviously in contemporary society, there are no written rules about female marriage proposals; however, while there are many notions of romance that have become somewhat old-fashioned in our culture, like saving ourselves for marriage, society still seems to think that it should be the man who gets down on bended knee.

Sure, there are many couples that reach a mutual decision on marriage, but when you hear about those grand or endearingly thoughtful proposals, it always seems to be the man’s doing. I want to know why ladies don’t plan romantic proposals for their guys. Or do they? Do you think that the male-only proposal is outdated? Would you ever be the one to pop the question?

Supreme Court Considers Legality of Crosses on Public Land

While the Supreme Court decides whether or not religious symbols can be erected on public land, one justice already has his mind made up. During the oral arguments on the legality of a cross at a World War I memorial, Catholic Justice Antonin Scalia more than hinted at how he is voting. Scalia said yesterday:

What would you have them erect? . . . Some conglomerate of a cross, a Star of David, and you know, a Muslim half moon and star? . . . I don't think you can leap from that to the conclusion that the only war dead that that cross honors are the Christian war dead.

Scalia definitely has no problem avoiding religious sensitivity. He seems to dismiss even the idea of a more inclusive memorial outright. Since the memorial was built more than 75 years ago, there could be a valid argument for preserving it for historical reasons, but it seems only right that today's memorials should not favor one religion. Then again, perhaps the separation of church and state goes even further to dictate that no religious symbols should be found on public land. That is the question the Supreme Court must decide.

What do you think? Should crosses be allowed on public lands, should religious memorials be required to be all-inclusive, or should religious symbols be banned altogether from public land?

We may have spent this week fixated on Former Tennessee GOP leader Chip Saltsman's Mixed CD scandal, rounding up the very best of 2008 and ringing in the New Year, but all kinds of wacky things were happening around the globe.

Women Said No Sex for Men Who Shoot Fireworks - A group of hundreds of women in Naples announced they wouldn't make love if their men shot off dangerous fireworks on New Year's Eve. Apparently local firework displays injure or maim hundreds each year. No word on how the protest went.
2008 Lasted an Extra Second - The world's official timekeepers added what they call a "leap second" to the last day of the year to help sync clocks to the earth's slowing spin on its axis.
Alleged Drug Dealer Accepted Gift Cards - Athens, AL police have a 38-year-old man in custody for allegedly accepting gift cards for payment for crack cocaine and prescription drugs.
Peruvian Jesus Born to Virgin Mary on Christmas - A 20-year-old Peruvian woman named Virgin Mary gave birth to a baby boy on Christmas day and named him Jesus. The baby's father isn't name Joseph, but he is a carpenter.
Woman Gave Intruder "The Squeeze" - An 88-year-old woman in Oregon fended off a naked intruder by grabbing the man's crotch and squeezing.
Soothsayers Predict Peace and Calm for 2009 - Chinese soothsayers warned that the road to economic recovery will be long, but say the world can expect peace and calm for 2009.

Three! Two! One! and One More! 2008 Will Last an Extra Second

Ready to say adios to 2008? You are going to have to wait one whole second longer this New Year's Eve. The world's official timekeepers (who knew we had them?!) have added what they call a leap second to the last day of the year to help sync clocks to the earth's slowing spin on its axis.

The US Naval Observatory - the keeper of the Pentagon's master clock - will add the extra second on Wednesday in coordination with the world's atomic clocks at 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds Coordinated Universal Time (that's 6:59:59 p.m. EST). It's the 24th second to be added since 1972, when the practice began.

So take one extra second today to soak in all your accomplishments! And don't worry, when the fireworks go off, it's really time to sing "Auld Lang Syne" and lean in for your kiss.

Are you bummed that Christmas is over, and now you gotta worry about what you're going to wear to a New Year's Eve party, what your resolutions are, and how the number nine isn't as fun to write as the number eight? (I know - life is hard.) Well, let me drag the Christmas season out a little further for you. I found this hilarious public access performance by a mother/daughter duo who seems positively thrilled to be performing. (I'd check the daughter's pulse if I were the producer - I'm not sure she's still with us.) You often see people in SNL skits and Will Ferrell movies pretending to be awkward, bad performers. Well, here's the real deal, and it is so beyond bad, it leaps over to greatness.

Kilts and Queen Gather For Traditional Scottish Games

On the first Saturday in September the British Royal family descends on Braemar, Scotland for "the games." The monarch sponsors the Annual Braemar Highland Gathering, a traditional competition, whose modern incarnation goes back 200 years.

Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, along with many of their subjects watched a diverse set of events including: highland dancing, piping, tossing the caber, putting the stone, throwing the hammer, sprinting, long leap, tug of war, children's sack race. The British media noted that the Queen "wore a peach-coloured outfit, and a kilted Philip and Charles arrived at the Games arena shortly after 3pm in a maroon Rolls-Royce." Where Do You Stand? Marrying Young

I was having a conversation with a friend last night about how her BFF from college is getting divorced from her college sweetheart after only two years of marriage. While I know many young relationships flourish, I have to say I wasn't all that surprised by her news - people grow leaps and bounds in their 20's and it's common to see life in a whole new light, much differently from your school days. I look back on my college relationship now and realize how wrong we were for each other, but that's just me, so tell me where you stand on marrying young. Do you think age is just a number, or do you think regardless of the relationship, it's better to wait for more life experience before saying "I do" to someone you met when you were young and inexperienced?

Got $12 Million? John McCain's Arizona House Is For Sale!

Would you pay a "celebrity premium" to scoop up the former Phoenix house of John and Cindy McCain? The current owner is selling the abode (Cindy's childhood house, and the McCain's residence for 20 years) for a cool $12 million - four times more than the current owner paid Cindy for it in 2006. That's a lot of air conditioning. Though the decor has been updated from the McCains' time, the jungle bedroom is . . . specific. If it's your taste, you're in luck: the furniture (including leopard-print dining chairs) is included.

The 14,000-square-foot home, with 13 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms, could leap in value if the senator is elected. Not to mention, the McCain family handprints in the cement outside are pretty precious. What do you think - would you move in?

Outsiders Become Insiders: You Decide The Parties' Platforms

Welcome to the smoke-filled room! This week, Democrats announced that the party will seek public input on its 2008 platform, the document representing the party's vision for the next four years. Today, the Republicans followed, signaling that the major parties care about the ideas and needs of everyday citizens.

Democrats say that the process will empower all Americans who just want the best for their families. They want Americans to host and attend meetings joined by policy experts. Leaders will then consult written summaries when crafting the platform.

The GOP says its initiative is the most grassroots-driven platform development effort in the history of American politics. You can offer your ideas using text or video.

Responding to the parties' request could require a leap of faith, as I wouldn't be so sure that my ideas would be seriously considered compared to "scientific" polling data coming from swing states. Either way, this sounds like a great way for the parties to justify a party platform flip-flop - "the people have spoken!" What policies would you suggest to the Democrats of Republicans?

You Asked: Should I Follow My Instincts or Listen to My Mom?

Dear Sugar,

I am 27 years old and truly miserable at the job I've had for the past five years. It started out as what I considered to be my "dream" job, but has turned into anything but that. I've tried to voice my concerns to my boss to no avail. I've had a lot of unanticipated personal health issues come up in the past few months, which have given me a lot of perspective on what I want out of life.

Since I never got the opportunity to do so before, I really want to travel the world for the next few months. I don't even want to ask my work for a leave of absence - I just want to go and find a new career when I return. But my mom feels like if I do this it'll be a huge mistake and that I won't be able to find another job when I get back. Every time I express my excitement about leaving, she just reminds me how expensive health insurance is, and how my new job could be even worse.

My dad has been really supportive and reminds me that my mom was raised differently. I understand this and know that she does love me, but her lack of faith in me is really crushing. It also hurts to know that she would rather see me unhappy at a job I detest than possibly happy, but temporarily unemployed. Her opinion really does matter to me. What do I do?

Dear Desperate to Quit Denine,

I don't think you should assume that your mother's concerns reflect disappointment in you or the choices you've made. It sounds like your mother is thinking about this change from a very rational perspective, and is truly concerned about possible financial repercussions. Not to sound cliche, but she's worried about you because she loves you. Your mother comes from an entirely different generation that didn't grow up thinking that it was OK to follow passion above financial responsibility.

That said, you are a financially-independent and an emotionally-capable adult who knows what's best for you. Perhaps your need for your mother's approval is actually a manifestation of your own fears about abandoning your terrible but reliable job. Whatever the reason, if you're miserable, it's time to leave your job - sometimes taking a big leap of faith is all it takes to get the clarity it sounds like you need.

Consider all your options and make a plan. Create a budget including the time it may take to find a job when you return, and make sure to leave a cushion of three to six months, just in case. Establish what types of jobs you'd like to pursue when you get back. Create a back-up plan - can you take a leave of absence from your job initially and decide whether or not you'll come back when you return? Once you've looked at every possibility, bring your mom back into the discussion. Realize that she still might not be thrilled about your decision, but she'll likely be more comfortable to see that you've thought everything through!
