Stranger than Fiction: School Used Lap Dance Therapy

When you think of activities to help the emotional growth of teens with behavior troubles or special learning needs, lap dances would probably be the last thing you'd think of.

But that's exactly what the staff at Mount Bachelor Academy came up with, and they forced students to undergo lap dance therapy as a part of their "emotional growth" curriculum. The boarding school was shutdown after students accused the staff of employing this dubious therapy, and a seven-month state investigation has just confirmed the allegations.

According to the report, the school's "Lifesteps" seminars made students take on sexualized roles and perform in front of staff and students. One girl, who had been raped before going to the school, was forced to dress as a French maid and perform a lap dance. (Who thought this was a good idea?!)

Oregon's Department of Human Services says the school poses "a serious danger to child safety." Whenever I hear these horror stories about reform schools, I wonder: did anyone ever check to see if the people allowed to run them for so long needed some reform themselves?

Get Ready For the First California Pole-Dance Championship

I have no doubt that pole dancing, as a press release for California's first pole-dance championship next month puts it, "requires strength, agility, flexibility, and endurance." Nor do I believe that pole dancing is "just posing against a pole" but rather involves "spinning, inverts, climbing, and power holds."

But what does it mean to elevate to a sport an act that originated in strip clubs and which symbolizes a woman's role as a sex object? We'd pause (at least, I hope we would!) if there were a competitive lap-dancing competition. But a similar argument could be made for making it a competition: a woman needs strong calf and thigh muscles to "dance" over a man's lap.

Pole-dance exercise classes have gone mainstream, so it's no surprise pole dancing has turned competitive. Women get enough reminders from the media that our jobs are to be sexually alluring - why not actually just learn a sport or emulate the acrobats who perform for Cirque du Soleil? At least a high-wire act doesn't come with symbolic baggage.

Stripper Music Radio Station - Hilarious or Horrifying?

A radio station in Denver recently underwent a format change to become 101.5 The Pole, devoted to "classic nonstop stripper hits" from the '80s and beyond. Though it may just be a temporary stunt while the station transitions to an actual new format, The Pole is indeed spinning strip-centric hits until further notice. Do you think it's funny or foul?

Do Tell: Would You Date a Man Who Had Gone to a Prostitute?

I have the major deal breakers most ladies probably do - no mass murderers, kitten haters or men sporting mullets (OK, I might compromise on the last bit if it's an ironic mullet). I wonder if others share another one I have, though: I'm not sure I could ever seriously date a man who'd been to a prostitute.

Although I think prostitution should be legalized, there's something about a man who wants to or has paid for sex that gives me heebies. If he thinks of women as chattel to be bought and sold, how would that reflect on his view of women in general - or me? Perhaps I am being too old fashioned (but then again, I'm not too thrilled with men who go to strippers or get lap dances, either).

- A spokesperson for former president Bill Clinton denied reports that the former president had a wild boys' night out. An Argentinean reality star said she gave Bill a private "baile hot" (lap dance) during his recent trip to Argentina to raise money for his foundation. Who needs strippers, lap dances, or the company of pretty women (or men) at hostess/host bars when you can crawl around a café on all fours petting cute cats? The Calico Cat Café in Tokyo allows you to do just that. For a mere nine dollars an hour, you can come in and have tea and a little feline company. There are rules, of course. Kids who are younger than fifth graders aren't allowed in. You can't touch a cat if it doesn't want you to (just like a strip joint!). You can't wake sleeping cats, and you can only feed them what the café supplies. Whoever decides to open one of these in the United States is going to make a killing - and I will be the first crazy cat lady in line with crisp bills in my hand.
