Geeking Out in Japan: A Retrospective

My two weeks in Japan went by in a flash, but I have the memories to last a lifetime - and now I'm sharing them with you! My trip through the "Electric City" taught me a lot about gadgets in the land of the rising sun, and attending the Tokyo Game Show was one of the highlights of my trip. And even though I didn't get to see the massive Gundam statue in all its glory, I did get to check out the head at TGS. Trust me, this thing is huge! Portable Chic: My Favorite DS Cases

Nothing says fertility like a giant pink penis - am I right, ladies? At least, that's how they celebrate fertility in Kawasaki, Japan, during the Kanamara Festival held during cherry blossom season.

Men dress as women in pink, and women enjoy phallus-shaped candy, all with the goal of raising AIDS awareness and bringing harmony to married couples. It looks sort of like a big, coed bachelorette party. Sign me up! And be sure to check out more pics below - including some very tantalizing radishes.

Victoria's Secret: Inside Posh's Makeup Line

Backtrack 10 years, if you will, and think of the Spice Girls' heyday. Would you have pegged Posh as the one to become the most famous of the five? But here we are, and Victoria Beckham is the one who's becoming a global lifestyle brand.

In Japan, she has a makeup line called V-Sculpt. I first heard about it a few months ago, when Yum and I were obsessed with making the gesture that Victoria does at the end of this video.

In the January issue of Elle, Victoria explains it. Here's an excerpt:

"It’s called V-Sculpt," she explains. “In Japan, [some women] are very self-conscious. They don’t like that they feel they have round faces. So I came up with this concept of sculpting. Basically, it shows where to highlight and how to apply the makeup. It’s all about sculpting your face and getting that V.” She makes a V
with her index fingers. "That sculpt."

I don't think that Victoria exactly invented this technique, and I happen to think round faces are pretty! But considering the popularity of Posh, I have a feeling she'll make a fortune. Do you think V-Sculpt would fly elsewhere? (And are you similarly addicted to watching this video?)

If A Little Color Goes A Long Way, Where's The Variety?

Note to designers and gadget manufacturers: Some of us are sick and tired of candy-colored MP3 players, cameras and cell phones.

Apple's announcement that the new iPod nano will come in silver, black, blue, green and red and the shuffle will come in silver, mint green, turquoise, lavender and magenta (those are my descriptions of the colors, not theirs!) got me thinking about the fact that almost all gadgets in the US are either staple colors like white, silver and black or bright - almost juvenile - hues of red, blue, pink and green.

Where, my friends, are all the fall colors like orange and yellow, or the muted, retro colors? I was scanning through a catalog for the Japanese mobile communication company KDDI and was floored by its amazing color selection for Toshiba, Panasonic and Casio phones. I'm not asking for a full array of pantone colored cell phones, I'd just like a little more variety. I know someone is spending millions of dollars on market research, but I just can't believe I am the only American who would prefer a "jewelry gold," "fresco orange" or "palmer brown" cell phone to sorbet colored ones?

Trend Alert: Messy, Imperfect Hair

I love browsing Japanese fashion and beauty magazines like Cutie and Non-No for inspiration. Even though I'm functionally illiterate in Japanese, it's fun to look at the various hairstyles and makeup. Among the trends I'm spotting is something you might wear already: mussed-up hair. The look is a little different from bedhead or the unwashed look, mostly because hair still looks clean and somewhat styled. I think it's a cute weekend look, since it doesn't seem calculated at all. Since a lot of style trends start in Japan, it's likely only a matter of time until it migrates to the States. Would you do your hair like this?
