Adult ADD and ADHD: Know the Signs

Adult ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are conditions that have to do with the way you think. Unfortunately, they can seriously affect adults when it comes to their job, relationships, and their finances. It's true that they have to do with not being able to concentrate, but there's a lot more to it. Some of the signs include:

"zoning out" during conversations, or daydreaming

not remembering being told something
being late or forgetting to show up when expected
speaking without thinking first or interrupting others when they talk
talking fast or excessively, and hopping from one topic to the next
getting easily frustrated or bored
procrastination or difficulty staying focused
not finishing what you start (projects, books)
low self-esteem or insecurity
impulsive behaviors, quick to get angry

Adults with ADD or ADHD may also be able to maintain intense focus on something that they are greatly interested in. This is called hyper focus, where people can be engaged for hours with a lack of awareness for others or time. They can be super determined and have high energy and enthusiasm for something if it sparks their interest. Einstein and Da Vinci had this ability and look how successful they were!!
People with ADD or ADHD are also great at creative thinking, problem-solving, and brainstorming ideas. Scientists, inventors, artists, musicians, and doctors can benefit from this type of brain.
Intelligence, flexibility, and spontaneity are also character traits of someone with ADD or ADHD.

Dear's Advice: If this sounds like you, and your symptoms are preventing you from living your life the way you want to, I would definitely talk to a therapist. They can offer suggestions for ways to help with the symptoms that get in the way of your job or having the relationships you want, possibly prescribing drugs to lower the symptoms of these disorders. Plus you'll feel better talking to someone who understands and supports you.

GiggleSugar Reader of the Week: Francoisehardly

See that little tot there? She grew up to be funny, smart, and have awesome musical tastes! Francoise Hardy is one of my favorite of the French yé-yé singers from the '60s, so I was pleased to see a reader was paying homage to the French goddess with her screen name. This lady's too cool for school. With musical tastes ranging from The Velvet Underground to Television to Joanna Newsom, I had to find out more about this mysterious GiggleSugar fan! GS: What’s your motto?
FH: "All I can do is be me. Whoever that is." I stole that phrase from Bob Dylan since I think it makes sense for me and I don't already have a motto but I would probably make that one one of mine.

GS: Where are you from?
FH:The New York City suburbs. It's boring here.

GS: What do you do? I'm currently trying to transfer yet again to finally finish school and work in graphic design. Even though if school wasn't necessary and I could do many things at once, it would be awesome if I could also be a movie director and a cinematographer and maybe a nutritional anthropologist. I don't know where someone works when doing that but it seems interesting.

GS: How would you describe your sense of humor?
FH: I'm not quite sure what I would call my sense of humor. According to my sister, it's dry at least when it comes to how she considers me funny. I like shows like Arrested Development, both versions of The Office, Fawlty Towers, and Pushing Daisies. I don't know what that says about my sense of humor.

GS: What’s your favorite GiggleSugar post?
FH: Things that involve animals, cute kids, Demetri Martin, and the 1980s.

GS: Who’s the cutest (best-looking) funny man and funny woman?
FH: Demetri Martin because his sense of humor suits me? I don't actually really think about which funny people I think are cute. For females, Amy Poehler? I like her hair.

GS: Who are your favorite male and female comedians?
FH: For male, I'll have the give the same answer along with Bill Murray and Jon Stewart. For female, maybe Tina Fey or Gilda Radner when she plays the hyperactive girl who pretends to have her own show in her room.

GS: What’s your favorite comedy of all time?
FH: It's a little hard to pick one because some of the movies I like have funny parts but aren't necessarily comedies. Maybe Rushmore or Harold and Maude. Maybe Elf for Christmas movies. If humans raised by Christmas elves actually existed they would need to be my best friends. We could decorate the whole house super fast and make Christmas sweets, especially sweets that involve chocolate and gingerbread houses.

GS: If your life were a comedy, what would it be?
FH: Probably The Royal Tenenbaums meets Harold and Maude meets Amelie meets A Hard Day's Night and it would be shot like a Michel Gondry movie mashed up with Truffaut with the cinematography of a Sofia Coppola movie. (GS: Whew!) And it would also have elements of Arrested Development. I have absolutely no idea how that would work, but I get to be Margot with the fur and cigarettes replaced with chic beige trench coats and some records and be Margot when she had dark hair.

GS: Do you look like someone famous?
FH: I can tell you who I wish I looked like but no, I don't. I was happy to get people like Audrey Tautou, Ingrid Bergman, Katherine Hepburn, and Mia Farrow on the My Heritage site, but I don't think I look like any of them.

Francoisehardly free-for-all: I wasn't quite sure what to post here, so I'll just say this. If you're in a bad mood, watch Goldfrapp's video for the song "Happiness," and I'm not just saying that since I listed the song as a Spring playlist choice for BuzzSugar. It features a really happy man in a white suit bouncing all over town, it's an adorable video and hopefully it'll put anyone who watches it in a better mood.

Ho! Ho! Uh-Oh!

There are layers upon layers of funny in this news broadcast. First, there's the dumbass who wanted to play Santa Claus by squeezing himself down his own chimney. Second, there's his hyperactive hurricane of a girlfriend who storms in and out of the segment while screaming about her property damage. Third, the on-camera interview involves flipping the bird and popping a squat. And then, of course, there's the fact that this even made it to television-- and as a "top story," no less. Need I say more?

GiggleSugar Reader Spotlight: Swwonder

GiggleSugar shines its spotlight on one of our fab readers from across the pond--the sassy Swwonder from the U.K. She may add a "u" to words like "honour" and "colour," but she has one thing in common with other loyal GiggleSugar readers--she's got good taste and a great sense of humour! Heh heh. Be sure to check out her picture gallery at the end of the interview.

GS: What's your motto?
SW: I made one up a few years ago and it sort of stuck; "Be fine and dandy all the way to your funeral and if you can, help others smile along the way." In other words, just stay happy until the day you die and help others do the same.

GS: Where are you from?
SW: I was born and raised in Robin Hood Country (aka Nottingham), England. Meaning, I'm extremely sensitive about the whole "Robin Hood isn't real" theory and I'm probably not the best person to watch any Robin Hood film with, unless it's the Disney one which I think is quite accurate.

GS: What do you do?
SW: Right now I'm a Gap Year student. To which everyone answers, "So basically you sit around doing nothing." Which is partially true, although when I'm not "sitting around doing nothing" I volunteer at my local Oxfam store, working on vintage clothing. The rest of the time is spent between my large family and visiting my friends at University.

GS: How would you describe your sense of humor?
SW: I suppose it's quite typically British: sarcastic, dry and witty. With a little randomness thrown in.

GS: What's your favorite GiggleSugar post of all time? Your least?
SW: Any Family Guy post automatically rates highly in my eyes, I love all the mini Brian/Stewie story lines. In fact most videos featured I love, but one of my faves was the Cute Kids Wassup video. I also loved the Burger King 911 call (am I allowed to pick one that I bookmarked?), it was funny and sad at the same time. Oh, and I can't forget Squiffy the cat. (GS: I can't find Squiffy!) For the least I'd have to agree with Sticky - the man/dog (GS advertisement) creeped me out.

GS: Who's the cutest funny man and woman?
SW: I've had a huge crush on Johnny Knoxville since "Jackass" started, most of the stuff they did on the show made me cringe, but he reminds me a little of Brad Pitt's evil twin. My cutest funny woman would have to be Jessica Stevenson, a good friend and co-writer lady of Simon Pegg's (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz).

GS: Favorite male and female comedian?
SW: My most favourite overall comedian would have to be Lee Evans. He's the sort of person that if you knew him in real life would be completely irritating, but because you don't he's hilarious. A bit like a hyperactive child with the attention span of a flea. For the female, you can't go wrong with a little "French and Saunders".

GS: What's your favorite comedy of all time?
SW: This is so difficult. Well, on TV I've pretty much grown up on a staple diet of British comedies, my favourites being "Absolutely Fabulous", "Father Ted" and "Red Dwarf". All of which I've watched from an early age and probably shouldn't have. My favourite comedy films are probably Coming to America which is actually a family favourite and how I learnt how to do a few pretty convincing (in my opinion) accents, and Empire Records mostly because of the character Mark, whose personality reminds me of my friend Yos.

GS: If your life were a comedy, what would it be?
SW: Probably one of those comedies that doesn't end up running for a whole season, that nobody really understands. Although, there's a possibility it'd be a bit like Mr. Bean - following me doing my normal day to day tasks, unintentionally slapstick and with a few funny voices thrown in.

GS: Do you ever get told you look like someone?
SW: I did the Face Recognition thing (www.myheritage.com ) a while back and it told me I looked like the footballer Ronaldinho, which everyone thought was hilarious (but hopefully not true). When I was younger I got told I looked like Raven-Symoné and Susie from the "Rugrats" a lot. More recently I get told I look and sound like my mum, I even get mistaken for her on the phone - It's made a few phone calls very awkward.

Free-for-all. About me:
SW: Well I'm 19 years old, sort-of student. I spend most of my time with my younger brother and sister, writing, reading, listening to music and watching films. Personality wise I'd say I'm a bit like the girl in Police Academy who was really quiet most of the time, but shouted really loud when she was angry or excited.

GS: When are other GiggleSugar readers free to chat with you?
SW: Well, I'm normally on first thing the morning, which always seems to be around 3 AM California time. Other than that it's sort of hit or miss, but I reply to my Guestbook's and PM's so you can contact me there.

There's No Place Like Home

Dear Sugar
I have been married for two years and just had the most wonderful baby this past May. We had to move to the east coast for my husband's job and I am terribly home sick. I am having a hard time meeting people despite my efforts at being a part of my community. To make matters worse, my husband is on medication for a hyperactive thyroid.

That combined with recently having a baby is taking its toll on our sex life. I want it, but he continuously rejects my advances which makes me feel unattractive and unloved. I have been finding myself thinking a lot about my ex and wondering if I would have been happier with him. I know that my thoughts and feelings are out of control and I am hating myself for thinking about another man. What should I do? Lost Leanne

Dear Lost Leanne
It sounds like you could you be suffering from postpartum depression. You have made many life changes which are bound to be stressful and quite overwhelming so try not to be too hard on yourself. Is this a permanent move or is there an end date you can look forward too? Starting a new life and making new friends will not happen overnight.

Being a part of the community is a great start; try joining a mommy and me class which could be good for both you and your baby. Have you talked to your husband about your feelings of rejection? Make sure he knows what you need from him and that his support is very important to you right now. It is normal to day dream and think of "what if" when you are not in a happy place.

Are you having thoughts about leaving your husband or do you think these are just growing pains? Have you leaned on your family or friends for support? Perhaps you should look into seeing a therapist so you can speak your mind and work though your feelings of isolation. I am sure with time you will find your niche, and remember, your friends and family are only an airplane ride away.
