Sex in Water - Is It Safe?

Having sex in water sounds so sensual, doesn't it? When you're swimming in a pool or lake, you're practically naked already, so why not slip off your bathing suit and get it on? But, wait: Is it safe to have sex in water?

Not exactly. Lake, river, ocean, and pond water contains bacteria. Having sex can introduce that bacteria into your vagina, which could put you at risk for infections that you don't want up there. Pool water, on the other hand, contains chemicals that could irritate your lady business.

Aside from health risks, the logistics just aren't with you on this one. Since lubrication is key when it comes to sex that feels good, you don't want to end up all washed out (literally). The water dissipates your natural moisture, so you're left with friction-filled sex that won't last long. What's worse is that if you're using a condom, the friction could cause a tear, and you won't be protected from pregnancy or STIs if the condom breaks.

Moving from smooching to screwing in the bath seems like a lovely plan, but the same lubrication problem you have in other bodies of water will arise in a bath too. So what about doing it in the shower? Again, the water will wash away the wetness you make naturally, and we know that sex without enough lubrication feels awful. You could move to the end of the shower where the water isn't beating down, but you'll just end up chilly and with sore muscles from trying to have sex while standing.

My advice? Sex + water = no fun. So make love without the water.

Hot Tubs and Sperm: What's the Connection?

I'm sure you've heard that men shouldn't hang out in hot tubs because it can affect their sperm. Is this true or a myth?

Earlier this year, a team of urologists at the University of California conducted a study to test this speculation.

The study observed a group of men who were regularly exposed to hot water temps from hot tubs or hot baths, for at least 30 minutes a week. All the men showed signs of infertility.

What they also found out is that this could quickly be reversed. After these men ditched their hot water excursions, their sperm counts had an increase of 491% after three to six months.

So here's the deal. If a guy is trying to have a baby, he shouldn't be spending time soaking in hot water. If he's not at all thinking about babies, he can love up the hot tub as much as he wants.

Cell Phone Use May Affect Sperm

Many people think men have it a lot easier than women when it comes to making babies, but they have to do their part as well - especially when it comes to taking care of their sperm, since so many things can affect them. Eating soy may decrease their sperm count, spending too much time in hot tubs can also have the same effect (although temporarily), and now men have to worry about their cell phones. Yep, it's true. Cell phones are believed to be safe enough to use every day, but now a new study suggests that guys who put their phones in their pockets (on talk mode) while using a headset may have a decrease in the quality of their sperm. It has something to do with their precious business being exposed to cell phone emissions.

In this small study, several semen samples (from 32 men) were divided into a control group and a test group. The test group semen was placed 2.5 centimeters from an 850 MHz cell phone in talk mode for one hour (850 MHz is the most commonly used frequency). Researchers found that there was a decrease in antioxidants, which means a decrease in the sperm's quality - the little guys couldn't move with as much agility, and they weren't as strong of swimmers as the sperm in the control group.

Since this was a fairly small study, representatives from cell phone companies are not giving it much merit and men aren't being advised to change their cell phone habits. But if I were a guy, and starting a family was something in my future, I'd definitely find a new place to lay my phone - far away from my boys!

Is It Sanitary To Bathe Babies in the Kitchen Sink?

Dear Sugar
A few months ago I had my first baby, a beautiful little girl. I've been giving her sponge baths all this time because her baby tub won't fit in my sink and it's too difficult to reach her safely and effectively if I put the tub in my adult-size tub.

Everyone keeps telling me to give her a bath in my sink but the only one that's big enough is the kitchen sink. I really
want her to have fun in her baths and be able to splash in the water, etc..., but I don't know how to sanitize the kitchen sink and make it safe for her to bathe.

Should I pour bleach down the drain to flush out anything nasty and sterilize it? Will that leave residue that could hurt the baby's skin? Sanitary Sally

Congrats on your new bundle of love! No, no no - you don't have to do anything like clean the sink with bleach or clear the drains. Just use your common sense.

As long as you haven't been cleaning chicken or cooking with raw eggs in the sink without rinsing it you are fine. Just carefully wash the sink out with hot soapy water before you bathe the baby.

My mother gave me baths in our kitchen sink for years. Now she does the same with her grandchildren and there have been no problems.

Keep in mind that water from a sink or even a bathtub isn't sterile. It's not like the baby is going to be drinking large amounts of this water. Plus, you will be there with her the whole time. No worries Mama, she'll be a-OK.

Shady Justice? Court Says Blocking Solar Panels Is Illegal

In an epic showdown of redwood trees and solar panels, two environmentally-conscious families from Northern California met in criminal court for a battle of the shade. One electric car-owning family complained that their Prius-driving neighbors had redwood trees that were preventing the sun from hitting their solar panels. This is not an episode of South Park, but an actual proceeding in California criminal court.

The solar panels triumphed, and the convicted tree neighbors were forced to significantly trim decade-old redwoods. Under the Solar Shade Act, owners can be fined up to $1,000 a day for trees that impede solar panels. To see which came first, the solar panels or the shade, read more.

While this appears to be a case unique to California, typical neighbor issues were at play. Over the years, shade from their neighbor's growing trees, prevented the solar family from enjoying their hot tub or growing corn in the backyard. Seeking refuge in the solar law, the family installed the panels, informed the neighbors of the law, and offered to remove and replace the trees. The tree owners didn't want to touch the trees that were there first, so they all ended up in court.

California lawmakers recognize the dilemma. State Senator Joe Simitian has introduced a bill that will allow trees to grow if they were planted before the installation of solar panels.

"You know we have to be there two hours early for departure and we still haven't called the cab yet."

"A cab, I thought you said you got a car service to pick us up!?"

"I was going to, but it's the holidays, they were all fully booked, and why was everything my job? I booked the flights, I got the transfers, all you did was . . . well, nothing!" He snatches the shampoo and conditioner from her and stuffs it into his bag. "Are you ready now, or have you got another three bags for your shoes and all your other girly crap?"

"Girly crap? Perhaps you'd like me to narrow it down to one suitcase so I can dress like your mother. After all, that seems to be what you need these days. Can we please just enjoy this? Forget the car service, I'll drive us just as soon as I tie your shoes and make sure your socks match."

Rick looked down at his shoes to find that one was untied and he had mismatched socks on. Julie looked him right in the eyes and tried not to crack a smile.

What Julie didn't know was that they were staying at an all-inclusive resort, and she probably wasn't going to wear most of what she brought. See, it was a surprise - she thought she was going to visit his family in Colorado.

"Don't forget your swimsuit," he said. "Remember, the hotel has a sauna, pool, and hot tub! Nothing's too good for my Julie!"

But really, he had switched the reservations for the trip to Colorado and booked a new trip to Jamaica.

Rick fumbled around in his wallet, knowing his Visa was maxed because of the engagement ring he bought Julie yesterday. "Do you take American Express?"

The journey to Jamaica was like something out of James Bond, with Rick trying desperately to keep Julie in the dark about what was going on. He managed to talk loudly over any announcements about the destination and sat back, his grin as smug as the cat who got the cream, knowing that this Christmas would be their best yet. They wouldn't be suffering through Brussels sprouts, bad TV, and bickering; instead there would be sun, sand, and scandalous debauchery that would give him memories to distract himself during work for a year.

As they landed he took her hand and gently rubbed her palm with his thumb as they waited for their luggage.

"It's awfully hot in here," Julie complained, as she kept an eye out for the luggage.

"Pay attention to the game!" Rick urged, not wanting her to catch on just yet.

"What game?" She laughed softly.

"The luggage game, the excitement of whether it's your bag or not your bag but someone's whose looks similar . . . diving for it when it comes . . . " He replied somewhat distractedly as he looked everywhere but at the bags.

"Are you on something? Cabin pressure makes you odd or - ooh! our bags!" Julia leaped forward and with Rick's help dragged it off the belt. Checking everything was in order and accounted for, they walked out of the airport right into the bright sunshine and the calypso dancers welcoming them. Rick turned to see Julie's face, wanting to memorize this moment.

Julie looked confused. The look that Rick loved! Her eyebrows raised and there was a crinkle in between them. Then he just stared at her. Her lips began to curl as she realized that she would have a week without anyone except Rick!
