War on Drugs Makes Women the Enemy

If you've been following the story of Cleveland's alleged serial killer Anthony Sowell, you know it's horrific. Eleven female bodies have been found in and around the man's home, leaving the public wondering how could these crimes go on undetected for years. Writing in the Daily Beast, Cleveland journalist Mansfield Frazier says he knows why: Sowell was able to kill drug-addicted women without anyone noticing because the war on drugs targets women. Let's examine the evidence he uses to support this allegation after the jump.

Stranger Than Fiction: Car Crashes Into Couple's Bedroom

Imagine if you will, sleeping soundly in your bed with your boyfriend. Maybe you're spooning, maybe he's snoring, you're dreaming of kittens ice-skating...whatever.

Suddenly, a car crashes through your bedroom. Motor fluid sprays in your now-awake faces as you both struggle to get out from under the weight of the car, which now lies on top of you.

Well, that's exactly what happened to two Nevada college students last week when a drunk driver, thinking he was headed into the home his ex-girlfriend now shares with a new boyfriend, drove instead into their bedroom at 4 a.m.

Only Trent Wood's lower body was pinned by the car, but his screaming girlfriend Kristin Palmer's entire body was pinned. In less than an hour, thanks to neighbors who called 911, emergency workers removed the car from the couple. Wood says he was ecstatic he and his girlfriend only suffered minor scrapes and burns, and not paralysis as he feared.

He told a reporter, "When you experience something like that there's no limits anymore, you can try to do whatever you want to do. We feel like we have more of a purpose, like we were meant to live." I bet the drunk driver, who is up sh*t creek without a paddle (or car), has the opposite sentiment.

Isn’t it funny how once we settle into a new relationship, we end up falling into certain patterns. I suppose it’s only natural, but I still find it somewhat remarkable how easy it is to pick up a new routine and how hard it is to break out of one.

One of the most common patterns for couples to develop early on is their social routine. Some couples still paint the town red, socializing with their friends, while others feel best at home with just each other - sure, every once and a while you have to mix it up, but for the most part these categories stand. So ladies, when it comes to your usual relationships, which category do you fall in?

DIY Burials: Less Expensive, More Intimate?

Due to the recession, most of us focus on how much we spend going about our daily lives, but we don't often budget for death, which can be very pricey. An increasing number of people are finding ways to decrease the cost of burying a loved one - they're holding DIY funerals.

Compared to the average cost of a funeral, which runs about $6,000, taking over part or all of the burial preparations can cost family members as little as $250. In states where a funeral director is required, home funerals are still less expensive. And loved ones say it seems like "the natural, loving way to do things." It also sounds a little creepy. The New York Times explained the home burial process for 92-year-old Nathaniel Roe:

They washed Mr. Roe’s body, dressed him in his favorite Harrods tweed jacket and red Brooks Brothers tie and laid him on a bed so family members could privately say their last goodbyes.

There are countless organizations and individuals (called "death midwives") who help families with things like setting up cremation, moving the body to a cemetery, or securing a burial permit (if available) when a family decides to bury their loved one on their property. School Tells Girl: Wear a Dress or Skip Graduation

Chelsea Sarvis is a stellar high school senior about to graduate from Chapin High School in South Carolina. Despite her achievements, she might have to sit out the graduation ceremony. See, Chapin High School requires female graduates to wear a dress or skirt to the ceremony, while the boys must wear dress pants - but Chelsea wants to wear pants. The school has given her an ultimatum: wear a dress or stay home.

Chelsea says she dislikes wearing dresses because she doesn't feel comfortable with her body, and she wonders: "Why is it a stereotype that a girl has to wear a dress?"

What if Chelsea said she only felt comfortable in jeans? Would the school be obliged to let her wear them? Perhaps there's something about a dress that makes the school's dress code seem more like a sexist policy that pushes traditional gender roles.

The school could easily avoid drama if it just made an exception for Chelsea or modified its dress code to allow girls to wear dress pants if they want. Do you think it should?

Women's Gyms to Be Banned in Saudi Arabia

Feeling too lazy to go to the gym? You might jump on a treadmill or lift a few weights in solidarity with women in Saudi Arabia who face the shutdown of all women-only gyms.

Saudi women already face extreme limitations on their freedoms under Wahhabi Islam: they are not allowed to drive, vote, or run for public office; they must be covered in the presence of unfamiliar men; and they're required to have a male guardian.

And now, because the government has agreed to license fitness clubs for men only - categorizing women's gyms as unlicensed and illegal - they have nowhere to exercise without the scrutinizing eyes of men.

In protest, Saudi women recently launched a campaign called "Let Her Get Fat" which protested the decision to close down all-female fitness clubs that are not under the supervision of a government hospital or clinic.

Businessman Bader Al-Shibani, wanting to open a women's fitness club in Jeddah along with the men's club he runs, was told by the government they didn't have the authority to let him do that. "I ran into a stone wall at every turn," he said. "In the end, I just abandoned the project."

So what's the big deal about women working out? For one thing, in a kingdom that intensely regulates the female body, the idea that a woman would focus on strengthening her body - for her own gratification - must rankle patriarchs on a symbolic level. Leading Saudi clerics see an even more imminent threat. If women exercise, they argue, they'll be tempted to leave their homes and neglect their husbands and children.

The Dos and Don'ts of Bathing Suit Shopping

Now that Spring has sprung, it's time to start thinking about Summer! If you have plans to hit the beach, a comfy and flattering bathing suit is a must, but I'm with you if you're dreading that shopping trip. Before getting too discouraged, I have some easy tips for making bathing suit shopping as painless as possible. To see my dos and don'ts, just read more.

Don't

Shop with your body shape in mind.
Bring a close friend with you if you need a second opinion.
Get a spray tan before shopping - nothing is worse than trying on suits when you're feeling pasty white.
Make sure the suit fits properly. If your top is too big, it won't do your girls justice, and if your bottoms are too small, it'll cut into your side - not a good look.
Look in a three-way mirror so you can check out your backside.
Choose a color or print that flatters your skin tone, hair, and eye color.
Shop online (if the suits are returnable) so you can try them on in the comfort of your own home.

Go bathing suit shopping on a full stomach.
Berate yourself or fixate on what's "wrong" with your body - pay attention to the entire package.
Forget that fluorescent lights never do you justice.
Pay attention to the size of the suit. Most bathing suits run particularly small.

The Slobbery Kisser: Need I explain this one?

The Bad Listener: Sometimes it's the other way around and you need to give a guy some gentle verbal cues as to what you want him to do, or where you want him to touch you. It's no fun to be with a guy who ignores you completely and thinks he knows what you want.
