When you're dating or in a relationship, it's always fun to treat each other to little gifts. You can surprise him or her with something small to make them smile, like a pint of their favorite ice cream, or you can give a more meaningful gift, like that BBQ he had his eye on. Presents that make you laugh out loud are always fun too, like these hilarious bacon bandages, but the amount of money spent doesn't really matter. Welcome to DearSugar's new feature: Handle This. I'm going to give you a hypothetical scenario and ask you to tell me how you would handle it in the comments below. Let's give it a whirl.

You were invited to a friend's wedding who you were really close with in college, but since then, you've grown apart due to geography and time constraints. You still communicate over email and text, but haven't seen each other in years, which is why you decided to decline her wedding invitation, not to mention the fact that you've never met her husband-to-be.

You sent in the response card long before the due date and even called to apologize for not being able to make it, but she has ignored your efforts and hasn't called you back. You were planning on sending a wedding gift even though you opted out of the day itself, but now that she has completely stopped talking to you, you're not so sure you want to be that generous. Ladies, we all know how bridezillas can be, so tell me how you would handle this. Would you send a gift and be the bigger person, or write her off as a friend like she seems to be doing to you?

Dear Postmarked Penny--

What a cute idea -- gone are the days of receiving handwritten letters, let alone an out of the blue gift or care package, so I think you are so sweet to surprise your boyfriend like this! While it is much easier to send women fun mail, here are some general ideas that you might like.

Buy him a weekly or monthly subscription to his favorite magazine. If you want to push the envelope a little, you could opt for FHM, Maxim, or even Playboy!
A simple heart felt card is always a lovely gesture. If you want to stretch out the surprise, you could send him a daily note, leaving the grand finale to arrive on a Saturday
Sending photos of you two together is another heartfelt idea. If you want to step it up a notch, send some sexy photos of you in your favorite lingerie, although be careful when sending compromising pictures through the mail, you don't want them to get into the wrong hands!
I would consider an invitation to be fun mail, so you could formally invite him to dinner out on the town or a surprise weekend away
If you're feeling like spoiling your man through his stomach, you could send him a care package of Omaha Steaks or his favorite mustards for his next BBQ. I am sure he would be thrilled to open a box like that!

Whatever you decide to send, I guarantee your boyfriend will be touched by your loving gesture. Have fun!

Group Therapy: Should I be Upset?

Okay, ladies. I want your input...

My boyfriend and i have been living together since oct of 03.. we've been together about 3 1/2 years..

during that time I got 1 single flower on our 1 year anvrsry and then 3 flowers a few weeks ago because he felt bad for being really grouchy with me the whole week...

1st valentines day- Nothing
2nd v-day- little 1.99 box of chocolates
this v-day-- i had dropped hints that all i wanted was a flower or flowers.

I got a card that said I love you more than any other person.. and was really sweet.. then in the inside he wrote "i know this is odd that im getting you a card like this.. love you"...

what i didnt understand about him saying it was odd is for my birthday he had got me a card saying "my wife, my best friend blah blah blah" and he had wrote a long message talkinga bout how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me and how he got me that card that read "wife" because he wanted me to be that in the future blah blah blah and that he considered me his fiance...

i just knew for sure that he was going to get me a flower.. at least 1 flower.. esp. because i had been dropping hints..

no.. the card was it.

I was really upset and i tried not to be but i started crying ..

just seems that he doesnt put ANY effort intot hings.. he went out yesterday right before i got home to pick up the card.. and i know that is what a lot of guys do.. but I've never got a flower for v-day EVER and thats all i wanted.. and he knew that..

Do i have reason to be upset or am i over reacting??

Just because someone buys you a gift, don't feel like you have to buy them one in return.
It's always smart to have a few just-in-case gifts tucked away at home to prepare for this exact situation. Nice-scented candles, fancy bath products, even a cookbook could act as fabulous gifts on the fly.
Treating someone to a nice dinner out on the town is a great gift/way to say thank you and a nice way to spend quality time together.
If you're crafty in the kitchen, put together a homemade, holiday sweet treat. The gift of homemade is terribly underrated.
If you receive a gift from someone you don't know all that well, a nice handwritten thank-you note will be sufficient.
