Hide Your Embarrassing Books in Ereaders, Everyone Else Does

When I asked what books you were embarrassed to be seen reading in public, romance novels came up again and again. You're not alone. Their covers glorify some other life force - one where men with mullets are sexy - that is a turn-on to no one I've ever met. So it's no surprise they are the fastest-growing sector of ebooks; in fact, esales are expected to overtake print sales in 2011.

Romance novels have always been popular - why else would there be so many? The average reader, a married woman between 31-49, devours three per month, so nothing could be better for them than a click-and-purchase book. Especially since it doesn't announce its content to the world with a bare chest and ripped bodice.

You can remove the cover. Hide it in another book. You could never leave your house with it, or never actually buy it from the bookstore (i.e., read there, not steal!). There are plenty of options when you're too embarrassed to be seen in public with a literary pal besides not reading it, though that's one too.

It could be because it's too young, like when you're getting nostalgic with a YA novel, or because it's an embarrassing self-help book, or just something so popular or cliche you don't want to be seen with your face in it. Whether or not it stopped you from reading it, what book did you think twice about before picking up?

Even at its best, a trip to the gynecologist is usually pretty uncomfortable and can be down right awkward. Since going to a doctor’s appointment already makes most of us feel vulnerable, being naked in front of a doctor only makes things even more nerve-wracking. Anxiety, discomfort, nudity, and discussing sex and birth control are just about the perfect equation for an embarrassing moment to arise. This or That: He's Too Comfortable or He's Uncomfortable?

If there is such a thing as Mr. Right, you've met him and he really is perfect for you. You guys get along great, he makes you smile, and you both have similar life goals. In fact, you two have become very close in a short period of time. You feel very comfortable with him, which should make some of his grosser habits less bothersome, but even you think it’s too soon for all of the glamour to disappear. Would it be worse if he . . .

This: Had absolutely no problem passing gas wherever and whenever? Okay, it’s only at his place, but still, some things are best left unshared unless it’s an absolute emergency.

Don't pull out your cell phone and text your friends incessantly. This only makes you look as uncomfortable as you feel.
Order a drink while you wait. Slowly sipping a glass of wine or a cocktail will soothe your worried mind and give you the look of a girl just out for a drink. Do a little drink research before you head out, and you'll feel that much more confident ordering solo.
Check out the menu. There's no reason why you can't take a glance while you're waiting. It'll also keep your eyes busy, so when he does finally show up, you won't look like you were scanning the room for him.
Start up a conversation with your waiter. He or she might be running around, but if you ask for a drink or an entree recommendation, chances are they'll be happy to chat for a second or two. A few smiles and you're guaranteed attentive service for the remainder of your night.

Yoga Stretch and Tell. It's a place to share stories, questions, tips, and celebrations about yoga. Have you had a funny, emotional, AWFUL, or awesome experience in a yoga class? Why not tell the world?

I have an embarrassing story to share - well, not embarrassing for me, but totally an awful, life-altering experience for my friend Suzy.

We were taking a Vinyasa class one night. About halfway through the class, the instructor was having us go up against the wall and practice doing this crazy headstand where you lift your head off the ground and turn it into forearm stand. Not easy - but we were willing to try anything.

Everyone was upside down and then all of a sudden - we heard a loud "THUMP." We all stood up quickly and found Suzy totally knotted up, her back against the wall, her head on the ground, and her legs in the air. She looked like a car wreck.

I helped her up and she gasped. I looked over at what she saw and couldn't believe it - Her butt had slammed so hard into the wall that it left a HUGE dent. And really - she's a small girl, so it could have happened to anyone.

She was mortified. The instructor came over, and sweetly said, "Well, at least you can say you tried and that's all that matters." Well, that's true, but when most people try difficult poses - it doesn't leave a mark.

Whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right? Suzy wasn't too sure about that one.
