In the '60s, the space age sitcom The Jetsons toyed with the image of a family of four flying around in the sky in a futuristic automobile. No one believed such a day would come. But, folks, we're almost there. Now some lucky citizens like Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban who live in luxury high-rise buildings have what's called an "en-suite sky garage." The tricked-out feature is essentially a garage meets giant elevator, accessed from the street. After driving their luxury automobile of choice into a private driveway, the prosperous peeps drive directly into a key-lock elevator that lifts their vehicle up to the same level as their apartment. After opening their car door, they're simply steps away from their very own living room. No run-ins with prying neighbors in the hallway or dodging paparazzi in the lobby necessary.

Do You Know Anyone With an Elevator in Their Home?

The White House is an unusual home, but it's not the only home that features an elevator. Growing up I had a classmate whose ranch-style home had an elevator running from the main floor to the basement. I always suspected it was an escape route because her father was possibly a Mafioso. You needn't be a world leader or a criminal to own an elevator, though. Remember photographer Jay Maisel's 72-room bohemian dream house with its ornate copper elevator cage? Tell me: do you know anyone with an elevator in their home? Apartment buildings don't count.

Man Trapped in Elevator Video Becomes an Internet Hit: But Why?

I'm sure you've probably seen this video already, since it's been spreading on the Internet like a wildfire, but if you haven't, here's some background info to bring you up to speed. On Friday October 15, 1999, Nicholas White went outside for a cigarette break while working in New York's McGraw-Hill building (it was 11pm on a Friday). On his way back, the elevator stopped, and he was trapped for 41 hours.

The surveillance camera footage of those horrifying two days has just surfaced on the Internet and it has already been viewed 1.3 million times on YouTube. The video shows White panicking, pacing, trying to sleep and pry the doors apart. According to The New Yorker, who ran an entire article about the ordeal, White said that he feels as though people are so captivated by the video because they wonder what they would have done if it happened to them. I have to admit, after watching the video last week, I think about it every time I step foot in an elevator, even though I'm constantly armed with my cell phone. It also stirs up alot of emotions inside me, including frustration, sadness and hope for White. Why do you think people are so obsessed with this video?

Cats Trapped Inside For 41 Hours

You may have seen the gripping and disturbing surveillance video of the poor man trapped inside an elevator for 41 hours after leaving his office to take a smoke. Like all things in this world, there needs to be a cat version. Nora the cat playing the haunting piano accompaniment so instantly recognizable to those who've seen the other vid? A stroke of genius.

How To Make The Most Of Your Elevator Time...And Yes, We're Serious.

Ask if you can push the button for other people, but push the wrong ones.
Call the psychic hot-line from your cell phone and ask if they know what floor you're on.
Hold the doors open and say you're waiting for a friend. After a while, let the doors close, and say, "Hi (imaginary friend's name). How's your day been?"
Drop a pen and wait until someone goes to pick it up, then scream, "That's mine!"
Leave a box in the corner, and when someone gets on, ask them if they can hear ticking.
Stand really close to someone, sniffing them occasionally.
Swat at flies that don't exist.
Call out, "Group Hug!" and then enforce it.
Grimace painfully while smacking your forehead and muttering, "Shut up, all of you, just shut up!"
Crack open your briefcase or purse, and while peering inside, ask, "Got enough air in there?"
Stand silently and motionless in the corner, facing the wall, without getting off.
