A Do or a Don't: Personalizing Your Cube
Jul 16 2008 - 8:00am Since we spend most of our time at work, our cube or office space essentially becomes our home away from home. I've never gone so far as to put frames on my desk, but I definitely have my fair share of unique touches that makes my desk feel homey and familiar. On the flip side, some people don't even feel comfortable sharing their personal life with their co-workers so I'd assume personalizing their cube would be out of the question.

After a month and a half of working at my new job, I finally started adding a bit of my personality on it. I was so bored looking at plain cubicle walls that I just HAD to do it. Some people here do the same, some don't. I guess it is totally up to the person. I like having a bit of color and looking at different things, so I tend to do it as soon as I feel comfortable enough!

That picture makes me giggle! That girl is typing on a black screen! Hahaa...

Anyway, it would be fun to decorate! As George Carlin once talked about, a person always needs some of his or her stuff everywhere he or she goes!

I work at the corporate office of retail stores. We sell calendar, games and toys so my office is full of sample products that help decorate my cubie. I work in the logistics department so I also have mini trucks and airplanes from freight companies. My personal touches are a few family photos and some figurines I have acquired on my travels. The one thing I do not put up is a picture of my boyfriend because it leads to too many questions.

I think it depends on where you work. My office is somewhat conservative, so I have tasteful personal items; a couple of pictures and a small plan. I definitely don't have a little army of Troll Dolls or anything like that.

at this job i have no cubicle, everyone has a gargantuan desk and we sit in groups (like in elementary school haha) so i don't have a whole lot on my desk bc i hate clutter. but at my last job (at a newspaper) i would put up pictures and have little knick-knacks on my desk.

It definitely depends on where you work! I have a few pictures of me and my husband up as well as some art - I work with photography in a very small company, so it's totally appropriate. I took a cue from my co-worker's and my bosses and everyone has art, photos, comics, and other little knick knacks in their spaces.

I've been at my job for almost a year and a half now, and honestly I didn't decorate that much because I don't liek abunch of clutter. But a few months ago my coworkers decorated my cube with stuff before my wedding and I loved it so much I left it up. Now I have Dragon flies hanging from the ceiling above my desk and fairy stickers all over. It's like being in an enchanted garden all day and it helps with stress too. We often do stuff like that for each other on birthdays special holidays and such and it makes it fun.

IDK if I'd call mine 'decorated.'

I have a wooden bench for sitting, some little side tables, a lamp with some feathers on it, an MM machine, cut out lolcats hung up, a cross, a globey paper lamp, pics of my hubby and my family, a mirror, some super-awesome OU paraphernalia, a Rosie the Riveter, a ginormous Heineken poster and an Empire Records poster.

Okay now that I list all that and look around it does seem to be decorated.

    Yes. I decorate my cube.

Again, depends where you work. At my old job, I could have pictures, but they wanted decor of work that was done by you for your clients in your cubicle, as if to say "this is what I can do for you."

My husband works as a coding monkey though with hundreds of cubicles, and they don't care. Last I saw him, he was going off to work with a marshmallow launcher for their weekly "cubicle war." And I know he has a bunch of his college figurines and other fidget-friendly toys at his cube along with pictures of myself and our dog.

Well, I don't have a cube (yet), but as my summer job this year I'm CLEANING cubicles... so I see about 10 every day... and I gotta say that I love people who decorate theirs Sticking out tongue (so long as it doesn't get in the way, haha). Breaks up the mundane a bit.
The office I work at seems to let you have whatever you want so long as it's tasteful... people (especially the engineers) cover their walls in Dilbert comics, in pictures of family and friends, with interesting articles, all sorts of things. One woman covered her walls with a plastic sheet with a bamboo print. She has plastic tropical flowers all over, too, and it looks cool. One guy has a collection of Halloween figures (skeletons, zombies, Frankensteins, ghosts) parading across the top of his monitor. And another woman has a life-size black cat model perched on the top of her cube's walls! It startles me every time I pass it.

At my work we all have our offices, a little personal touch doesn't hurt. I think it's a good conversation starter too. I have pictures of my family & friends along with some with my hubby and my dog. I have a very small water fountain and it relaxes me when I close my door or when I have to meet a deadline.

Since I work in HR I suggest to becareful with the pictures that you put around your office/cubicle. You want to also keep those on the "safe" side.

I also have a framed picture of my boyfriend & me sitting on a bench at Longwood gardens (his mom gave it to me for Christmas & the frame doesn't really go with my apt's decor, so I brought it into the office)and a Hello kitty mousepad. that's about it. No one really comes in my office though.

I've been at my job for about 4 months... I don't spend that much time at my desk (more often in the lab), so I haven't really gotten around to decorating it, except for a few scientific "cheat sheets" that I dug up on the internet, and a calendar that mysteriously appeared on my desk on one of my first days.

As for photos, I would feel like people would perceive me as self-centered if I had pictures of myself hung up. And the ones with my friends are from college (I graduated 7 months ago) and I'm usually intoxicated, don't want to have those up for show at my job!

Maybe one day I'll start bringing trinkets to work.
