A Do or a Don't: Personalizing Your Cube

Since we spend most of our time at work, our cube or office space essentially becomes our home away from home. I've never gone so far as to put frames on my desk, but I definitely have my fair share of unique touches that makes my desk feel homey and familiar. On the flip side, some people don't even feel comfortable sharing their personal life with their co-workers so I'd assume personalizing their cube would be out of the question. What about you? Do you set up camp in order to make your workplace more pleasant or do you think adding personal touches is a don't since mixing business with pleasure can easily become too complicated?

Lookee! It's the least essential product ever created: Cube Lube from Bougé Industries, Inc. Because solving that Rubik's Cube faster, pussycat, kill, kill! is priority numero uno. (I love the little cartoon "spark marks" indicating the lightning speed with which this thing is being solved. Fierce!)

Last night at the Oscars, Kunio Kato won Best Animated Short for his work La Maison en Petits Cubes. He seemed to thank every person and object he's ever run across. At first you're like, oh my God, what else is this dude gonna thank? He thanks his pencil, animation, the Academy. And then he just KILLS it at the end. Hilarious - congrats Kunio!

Why, a bodybuilder wearing an overstretched thong while shaking her non-flabby tush for a couple of drummers and simultaneously solving a rubik's cube with her own two hands-- that's what! There is no rhyme or reason to this, until she flashes a message at the very end. Then it all makes perfect sense.

Writers and artists in the “confessional” mode are often accused of being narcissistic and self-indulgent. This may be true for certain male memoirists like James Frey (A Million Little Pieces), but I think we so rarely get accounts of women’s real lives that, self-indulgent or not, I welcome art and writing by women that gives me a window into their experience. Take Tracey Emin, an English multimedia artist who often incorporates details about her sex life into her work. Her exhibit “Those Who Suffer Love” in London at White Cube ends in a few days, and for those of us who can’t be there to see her envelope-pushing work, we can take a look at what’s in the exhibit, as well as work that made her famous.

Biden Calls Email Ad Terrible, Then Regrets Hitting "Reply All"

Did Joe Biden gaffe again? In a train-based interview with Katie Couric, she asked Biden about an ad being run by the Obama/Biden campaign mocking McCain's technological capabilities. Biden said of the ad, "I thought that was terrible by the way. I didn’t know we did it and if I had anything to do with it, we would have never done it”

The ad uses a disco ball and Rubik's cube to paint McCain as "out of touch" and says he "doesn't know how to use a computer," and "admits he can't send an email." What prompted Biden's discomfort with the ad? Perhaps this quote from a Forbes piece in 2000:

In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate. Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the US Senate's savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, Cindy. The injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type. Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop. "She's a whiz on the keyboard, and I'm so laborious," McCain admits.

It didn't take long for Biden to realize he'd just slammed an ad approved by the ticket he's on, and an ad he'd never actually seen. To see his clarification and his "terrible" conversation with Katie, read more.

He retracted the statement and issued the following:

Having now reviewed the ad, it is even more clear to me that given the disgraceful tenor of Sen McCain’s ads and their persistent falsehoods, his campaign is in no position to criticize, especially when they continue to distort Barack’s votes on an issue as personal as keeping kids safe from sexual predators.

Is this a Biden gaffe? Was he hit by an attack of conscience, or is the argument that McCain can't email because of his injuries the part that's actually out of touch?
