When's the Last Time You Cried?

Laughing too hard is my favorite reason to cry. A wedding might be my second favorite tearful occasion. And like most everyone else, I've also cried when stressed, sad, or in pain.

Humans have plenty of causes to cry, but we're the only species that sheds tears for emotional reasons. This has prompted psychologists to look into evolutionary explanations for why we cry. They found that crying helps us get what we want, release tension, elicit compassion, and communicate our emotions to others.

This got me wondering: when's the last time I cried (and why)? It was this past Saturday during the emotional climax of the book I was reading - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, if you're curious. When was the last time you cried? Has a Workout Ever Moved You to Tears?

A good workout often provides an emotional outlet for me; sometimes exercise is an even better outlet than talking about my problems. When I'm feeling stressed out, upset about something, or just need some time alone, sweating it out on a run or on my yoga mat always makes me feel better. Exercise can be like therapy, and at times the physical release has triggered an emotional one, so much so that it's moved me to tears. Has this ever happened to you?

"There's a place for crying," Joan says on an episode of Mad Men, "and it's your apartment." This would make sense in an ideal world, but it's not always easy to control yourself in real life.

Witnessing someone cry can be nearly as bad as crying the tears. Some people will just ignore, while others will look concerned, hand out tissues, ask the person if she's OK, or start an all-out conversation. If it was me I'd want to be left alone, so that's what I do. What about you?

Did you all watch the good soccer and even better looking men at the World Cup final yesterday? When Spain finally pulled off the win in overtime, adorable goalkeeper and member of our own dream team Iker Casillas was overcome by emotion. He couldn't stop crying, and his many tears teetered toward sobs at one point!

Society embraces crying men only in certain circumstances - we accept that men might cry upon the death of a parent, at the altar on their wedding days, or when they win an international championship. Other times it makes many people feel uncomfortable. What about you? Does it make you feel uneasy, or do you enjoy seeing men let it all out?

There's nothing more common than a parent crying at their kiddo's preschool graduation or wedding. Milestones can be a lot for mom or pop to handle, but does the unbridled sentiment turn attention from the child to the parent? Bill Clinton thinks so. And the former president doesn't plan to tear up as he walks Chelsea down the aisle later this month. He told CNN:

I am going to try not to cry because this isn't about me, it's about her. And if I am crying then it becomes partly about me.

Are You Teaching Your Son Not to Cry?

It's one thing to try and distract your child when he falls on the playground to get him up and running again and another to expect him to contain his emotions. Yesterday, I was making a quick run into the grocery store to pick up juice bars for my whimpering son who had a sore throat and fever. As I took him out of the car, quiet tears were falling down his face and a nice man who had parked next to us smiled before kindly telling my three-year-old that "boys don't cry." I disagree, but the situation made me wonder what other parents are teaching their sons. What's your opinion?

In fact, crickets are more likely to awaken him from his slumber. While some sounds, for instance your partner coughing or snoring beside you, disturb men and women equally, other noises such as a howling wind cause men to be more disturbed than women. . . . Women are more likely to be disturbed by a crying baby. . . . These differing sensitivities may represent evolutionary differences that make women sensitive to sounds associated with a potential threat to their children while men are more finely tuned to disturbances posing a possible threat to the whole family.
