Hallmark Introduces Gay Marriage Cards

Hallmark just announced that it will be adding three gay marriage cards to its assortment. It will be featuring two tuxedos, overlapping hearts, or intertwined flowers with either "Best wishes" or "Two hearts. One promise" written inside in order to keep the greeting neutral and appropriate for commitment ceremonies as well. Since California joined Massachusetts in legalizing gay marriage, Hallmark had to fulfill the consumer demand. Hallmark spokeswoman Sarah Gronberg Kolell said Hallmark wants to "be as relevant as possible to as many people as we can," although its stores can choose whether or not they want to add these latest offerings.

It seems only right that gay-marriage cards exist in the market place, but with so many people against this new law, it's not surprising that not everyone will be as excited as I am. What are your thoughts? Do you think selling gay marriage is a genius idea or do you not feel comfortable with these cards on the shelf at your local Hallmark store?

I asked you all if you were even remotely interested in Tarot cards, and I got a mix of reactions from "Oh, brother!" to "Tarot cards just give you a way to think about the situation differently, which is usually all you need in a crisis."

To elaborate more on why I think they help me think of life issues in a creative way, read more.

A Tarot deck has 78 cards, and each card has meaning. For example, although people think the Death card signifies something ominous, it often just means that a profound change is happening in your life, or that something is falling away that used to matter.

Although some use the Tarot to divine the future, I like to think of it as guided meditation.

Each card gives you a way of looking at your problem from a different perspective. In the Celtic Cross spread, after shuffling, you think of a question you'd like an answer to in your life (not a yes or no question) but something like, "How should I do this differently?"

You then put 10 cards down. The two in the middle represent the heart of the matter. The cards surrounding it, depending on their position, will tell you what's led you to this conundrum, how you tend to handle such things, and how you might look at the issue instead.

What's fun about the Tarot is instead of ruminating unproductively on a problem, you can look at the cards and almost feel like you're getting a different viewpoint on your situation.

Let's say you're having a hard time taking a risk. The Fool card in a certain position may tell you that it's time to have a devil-may-care attitude and try something new out. In another position, it may tell you you need to consider being cautious.

Whether or not I listen to these cards as "advice," the uncanny thing is, there's always one card that provides a clue to the situation I hadn't thought of. Not bad for a $10 deck of cards.

Ouija boards, ghost stories, the supernatural - some people give up these interests (if they had them at all) after about 7th grade when no one's hosting slumber parties anymore.

I, on the other hand, like to think of an occult practice like Tarot card reading as way to free up my creativity.

Do I believe that when I do a Tarot reading that the divine spirit Gaia is guiding me? Literally, no. So what is it all about then? Stay tuned, and I'll tell you, but first - are you interested in Tarot cards?

Pep-Rally for Brains Over Brawn? Academic Trading Cards!

Blah, blah, sports, blah. Not a popular sentiment, I realize - I mean they're fun to watch and all (I hear) but I'd rather know the names of the leaders of Zimbabwe than whether the World Series has happened yet. I just get concerned over the culture of idolizing athletes - because when has a touchdown ever cured cancer?

That's why I'm particularly excited over Penn State's new line of academic trading cards. Just like baseball cards (or the media heroes cards), the glossy collectables tout the top faculty members. According to the university president, "We have many great faculty, and they are surely worthy of the accolades our society often lavishes on athletes, coaches, and celebrities in the entertainment world." Hear, hear!

I mean, imagine if this girl was a excited about Glaciologist Richard Alley and his work, as listed on his card: "He unlocked the SECRET of the Greenland ice core." Take that to the free-throw line! The cards are sadly not for sale, but maybe even better they're being given away at football tail-gate parties. What more perfect place to nudge university fans into remembering that the school is well rounded and says the president, of "the important work being done by our leading scholars." No word on whether the cards come packaged with gum though. . .

Flashback: 1974 Weight Watchers Recipe Cards

The idea behind these 1974 Weight Watchers recipe cards is quite simple. Create enigmatically named food that looks revolting, and dieters will totally lose their appetites. I mean, "Liver Paté en Masque" (shown above) looks like it's covered in gray glue. And then there's "Caucasian Shashlik," (don't ask), "Jellied Tomato Refresher" (yum!), and "Fluffy Mackerel Pudding" (fluffy!). Look below if you dare.

Product of the Day: "You Are a Douche" Cards

Here's one way to make friends and influence enemies! According to the Douche Cards website, if you hand out this card to "the asshole in question," you'll avoid arguments or barroom brawls. And how is formally telling someone in writing that they're a douche going to do that exactly? Maybe I should try it out tonight at my local dive bar.

The How-To Lounge: Sending a Sympathy Card

Writing a thank you note is tricky enough, but even harder is mastering the art of sending a sympathy card. Still, writing a formal sympathy note to a friend who has lost someone close to her - whether you are attending the funeral or not - is a gesture that's always appreciated. Finding the right words can be tricky, however, so to find out how to send a sympathy card, read more

Hand-write your note on formal stationery or an understated note card. Stay away from playful or cutesy designs.
Use the tone you would when talking to the person you are writing. If it is a close friend, you should be conversational, but for family or work acquaintances, use a more polite, reserved tone.
Open the message by expressing your sympathy and succinctly acknowledging the loss, and use the deceased's name. It can be something as simple as: "I was so saddened to hear about the recent passing of your dad, George."
Personalize your note with some sort of tribute to the deceased. You could either list some of the qualities you liked about the person or offer a few of your best memories of the deceased. Short anecdotes are especially good.
Include some reminder to help the recipient feel hopeful, along the lines of: "You are lucky to have such a great family around to support you at this time."
Finally, sign off with an indication that the mourner is in your thoughts or, if you are a religious person, your prayers.

Business Card Battle Royale

Some of us at Sugar just got new business cards, and as we were debating the merits of matte finish vs. semiglossy, TeamSugar reminded me about the (highly entertaining) business-card scene in (the otherwise quite disturbing) American Psycho. Will bone beat out eggshell and pale nimbus in the subtle off-white smackdown? The tension is palpable!
