Fifty Nifty Obama Bumper Stickers - Which Is Your Fave?

Over at BumperActive.com, they're taking Barack Obama's 50 state campaign to heart - they're making a unique fender decal for every state in the union. They have about 20 states done and are cranking out the rest in the next few weeks. You can drop them a line if you want the heads up when your state is ready.

At less than $5 a pop, you could collect your favorite states and trade 'em with friends. Not to mention that 22.5 percent of the proceeds from each sale-that's $1 a sticker -benefits the campaign. Now of course I wish there was a corresponding McCain set, but I can appreciate good design regardless of party - the Arizona one is pretty darn clever. Which of these Obama stickers would you slap on your car?

Best DIY Bumper Sticker Ever

Namasté is a greeting commonly used by Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists in the Indian subcontinent to express deep respect. In yoga, you say it with a slight bow and palms together to mean "I am your humble servant." For this smartass, it's scrawled onto the rear end of a dirty car to say "up yours" to total strangers. Hey, language has to evolve, right?

Sticking one of these on someone's car is way better than keying it. (Not that I'm advocating, either--I'm just sayin'...)Who among us hasn't really needed to park, only to have some douche park right in the middle of two spaces, rendering both unavailable? I'm afraid I'd have to stick it on my car, though, because I do indeed park like an idiot. Sigh.

Say What: Maureen Dowd Gives a Shout Out to Congressman

"Wilson’s shocking disrespect for the office of the president - no Democrat ever shouted 'liar' at W. when he was hawking a fake case for war in Iraq - convinced me: Some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it."

- New York Times op-ed columnist Maureen Dowd on Congressman from South Carolina Joe Wilson's shocking interjection of "You lie!" during President Obama's speech on health care. Dowd agrees with others who think that this breach in protocol and civility was an attempt to delegitimize him as the president - because he is black. Congressman Wilson, as it turns out, once spearheaded a campaign to keep the Confederate flag above South Carolina's state Capitol and denounced the black woman who stepped forward and said she was Strom Thurmond's daughter. (She was.) Wilson has since apologized and the President has accepted his apology, but he's now a sort of folk hero for those who don't like the president, and "You lie!" bumper stickers abound. What do you think of that outburst and its significance?

Do Tell: What Random Acts of Kindness Have You Practiced?

I remember when I first saw the bumper sticker that read, "Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty." (Also a book.) I had two responses. The cynic in me: "Oh, give me a break. How corny." The realist: "Why should kind acts be random, or beautiful acts senseless? Why not be deliberate in your generosity and volunteer somewhere - to a homeless shelter, to help the elderly, or to foster kittens?" (OK, fostering kittens would not be a sacrifice! But I digress.)

Now that I'd like to think I'm older and wiser, my response is a little different. I've done volunteer work a couple times, but never for an extended period of time. One of these days, I will do that, but in the meantime, a random act of kindness can remind me of that intention and act as a bridge between the nascent do-gooder and the person who actually devotes time to others.

For example, there's a homeless woman I see almost every day on my way to work. In the past, I've walked by her, feeling awful but doing nothing. Now? I know I can't give her money every day, but sometimes I do, and sometimes, since I'm on a tangerine kick, I'll reach into my satchel and give her one. We now acknowledge each other every morning, and it feels anything but random.

I have a sticky - sticky - situation. I love my fiancé. He’s a down-to-earth, funny, intelligent guy, a Baptist from Kentucky; I’m a no-nonsense, fun-loving Catholic girl from Boston (he’s agreed we will raise our children Catholic). We’re both geeks, love the Red Sox, like staying up late, and sleeping with the windows open. We are extremely compatible. Our wedding is in June.

But! We have a bone of contention: I’m voting for Hillary. He’s voting for Rudy. After several heated discussions, we agreed to disagree about it. Everything has been lovely till last weekend.

I was out with my friend (ironically, we were attending a campaign meeting for Hillary in preparation for going to New Hampshire next month) and my fiancé plastered our car with Rudy Giuliani stickers. I mean he put them everywhere - all over the trunk, both backseat windows, and one on each of the front doors.

I’m so angry! I can’t be seen in a car with Giuliani ads! I’m not saying Giuliani’s a bad man, I just can’t see him as president. Hillary Clinton will be smarter, more thoughtful president. What do I do? The damn stickers are impossible to get off! Help! Even Brillo didn’t work! - Hillary’s Hand Maiden

Buy full-sheet sticker papers (25 sheets, $20 at DecalPaper.com or Stickerdelights.com).
Do not cut them into bumper sticker-size slogans.
Instead, design each full sheet to carry the 7 Reasons to Vote for Hillary in HUGE FONT.
Print 20 giant stickers.
Carefully place one Hillary sticker below each Giuliani sticker on your car.
Drive to The Boston Globe.
Call the Political Desk and ask a reporter to come down to the front door.
Hand the reporter a cup of hot coffee, show her the car, and tell her your story.
Get big press for your candidate and let your fiancé know that neither you nor Hillary will take any guff from the fellows.

Updates on the Ashley Todd: McCain Supporter Attacked Story

Update: A Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.

This story is making waves for a whole host of reasons, some of them you all began discussing yesterday. Chiefly: where's the outrage; is it true; and to what degree does it matter in the scope of the election? Here are the updates in the attack of Ashley Todd that may address those questions:

Police have admitted there are several "inconsistencies" with Todd's story of being attacked at an ATM by a large African-American man who beat her and carved a "B" into her face allegedly for noticing her McCain/Palin bumper sticker. They are requesting a polygraph because her "statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred."
Some question the timing of her Twitter account updates that seem conveniently timed to her attack.

The Executive Vice President of FOX news sees it as a crucial incident of politically motivated racism that will have a profound effect on the campaign either way, truth or hoax.
Both campaigns have addressed the incident, the Obama campaign saying, "We hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."

New York resident Tibi Vasilescu is the proud owner of the OBAMA 08 plate pictured above. His statement cost him $68 and gets him lots of attention - he's already been offered $1,000 for it. Vasilescu's first choice candidate, Bill Richardson, dropped out so his plate went Obama. Funny it's not affixed on an American-made car. . . . The New York database also shows a MCCAIN 08 plate on record.
