During a recent press conference, the CEO of the European airline Ryanair was asked to distinguish the difference between economy and business class on their new transcontinental flights. I always thought business class passengers paid the big bucks to get wider seats, real silverware, and warm napkins - but I guess I was mistaken. There are a couple more "perks" thrown in for good ~~measure~~ pleasure. (Fast forward to 1:00 to cut to the chase.)

Dear Sugar,

I have been dating my boyfriend for the past three months. We are both 40 and we have so many things in common. I must say that I am loving everything about this relationship. I think that I have finally found my soul mate.

Our lovemaking is off the hook. It is amazing. However, he does not like for me to perform oral sex on him, although he will do it to me. He will engage in a lot of freaky behavior in the bedroom, but is totally against me giving him pleasure in that way. I tried it once, and he let me go on about three minutes and stopped me saying "I'm scared." He says that he loves me, so what could he possibly be scared of? The only way you're really going to know what "scares" him is to ask. I could make up a hundred reasons such as he's afraid he'll orgasm too quickly, or he's worried you won't like the taste or that he smells funny. He may know that it takes him a really long time to orgasm with oral sex, or he just may not like getting blow jobs. Maybe it's your technique that could use some help, or maybe he's had a bad experience with someone hurting him during oral sex. I could go on and on.

Also, some people just prefer to pleasure their partner and they have a hard time just relaxing and letting someone pleasure them - he may get more sexually aroused from going down on you, or he may just not feel like he deserves that kind of pleasure himself. Keep the communication open with him, let him know that you want to be able to please him and make him feel good. After a heart to heart, I'm sure you'll be able to work this little issue out.

When you are inexperienced with men and their parts, it can be really intimidating. I'm sure women everywhere felt anxious and maybe a little embarrassed when they first started being intimate with men. We all can admit that we were nervous about what to do with a penis, and worried that we weren't doing it right, but honestly, all it takes is a little practice with an understanding partner, and you'll soon become more comfortable.

It's great that your man is open enough to explain what to do, but when you're involved in the moment, I don't blame you for feeling like it's a school lesson instead of an intimate experience. Maybe you can try talking about this when you're not getting it on. Have him explain and show you what to do outside of the bedroom. Start with learning what to do with your hands, and then you can move onto using your mouth when you feel the time is right. Another good option is to talk to your girlfriends about it (or anyone else you feel comfortable with). I'm sure they can give you some pointers about technique, so when the time comes to get intimate, you'll feel more confident about what to do.

I wouldn't be worried about your man moving on because if he really cares about you, he'll be patient and realize that sex isn't the only important thing in a relationship. Everyone is different, and it sometimes takes a little time to figure out how each other ticks so just try to relax and enjoy the time you have to practice. If he gets annoyed or impatient with you, then this guy's not even worth getting to know in that way anyway.

First off, the vagina is self-cleaning, as long as it's healthy. I mention that because I want to make sure that it's very clear that all of the myths about the vagina being dirty have more to do with sexism and sex-negativity than anything else. That was a bit different in the past, when women's medical needs weren't really addressed and things like yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis went untreated. At the same time, if you ever suspect that your scent has changed, that can be a sign of these or other conditions and it's worth getting checked out by a medical professional.

But assuming that there isn't anything like that going on for you, you definitely have my sympathies. Worries about our bodies and how our partners perceive us is a serious mood-killer. And the irony is that our partners often either don't mind or actively admire exactly those parts of our bodies that we're worrying about!

From what you've written, it sounds like your boyfriend has no problem going down on you. After all, if he's begging for it, it's probably something that he's into. How does he describe your scent or taste? If he's just as enthusiastic about that, maybe that can help you reframe how you feel about it. As the saying goes, we each have our own tastes (sorry for the bad pun, but I couldn't resist).

Try taking a shower before having sex. If you do it together, then it becomes part of the warm-up instead of a chore. Set the bar a little lower for a while and aim for discovering ways that it can feel good for you, even if you don't have an orgasm. Make it a science experiment and have him try different techniques so you can discover how they feel. One great way to do that is for him to do two different things, such as sucking your clitoris or making circles with his tongue for a little bit. Then you decide whether you liked A or B more. It's a fun way to explore new sensations and keep your focus on what you're feeling, rather than worrying about your scent. It could also be helpful if you ask your boyfriend for some positive reinforcement afterwards. After all, you're moving into an edge of your comfort zone and you deserve some hugs for that. When you're ready to move on from the oral experimentation, you'll probably feel better about it if he tells you how much he enjoyed it and that he's glad that the two of you are trying it out. If he goes too far and starts seeming pushy about it, that could backfire, so a light touch is better. But that's a really good way to make sure that you end on a positive note.
