Group Therapy: Worried About Biological Clock

I'm a 27-year-old hispanic woman who is currently not dating anyone and still lives at home. I help my family out because my dad is very ill and my mom doesn't have a high school education. I have three younger brothers who live with me and two of them are engaged and one of them has a long term serious girlfriend.

I have been feeling very depressed lately. I don't have a great job, so I don't have the right funds at this moment to move out. I work two jobs to help out as much as I could, but lately I don't know what to do.

I know women sometimes have kids in their 30s. I want to have a family, kids, the whole thing, but I feel as if my sands of time are not on my side.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my life to a better place? I feel sad all the time and am considering insemination at a clinic. It's over $2,000 . . . and I don't want to raise the child in my parents' home.

Researcher Tells Women Not to Hold Out For Mr. Right

Being 40, alone, barren. That's the cautionary tale writer Lisa Gottlieb spins in her new book Marry Him: The Case For Settling For Mr. Good Enough; now an actual research scientist is using findings to tell childless women to giddyup. By the time we're 30, we only have one-eighth of our eggs left.

Career girls and picky women who want babies better watch out, says Dr. Tom Kelsey, of St Andrews University in the UK, "'There are women waiting for the next promotion or waiting to meet Mr. Right."

Let's start with the fact that a doctor (albeit of computer science) used the phrase "Mr. Right." Even as a blogger, I would not stoop to the low depths of cliched female nightmares. But apparently a researcher's job is no longer just to report results, but pepper them with sassy, yet unhelpful, advice. It's like your overbearing mother got a PhD.

Men: They May Have a Biological Clock

Having a limited number of fertile years, or a biological clock, ranks high up on the list of concerns women have that men don't. If you're a woman who wants to have kids, you usually have to organize your life within a time frame to find a partner, get pregnant, and, if you have a career, put it on hold for a while.

One new study claims that men, too, may have a biological clock of sorts. Researchers found that when men father children after 50, their children scored lower on intelligence tests, no matter what the mother's age. Although the research findings are limited (the study doesn't follow the children past age seven), a man's freedom to father children at any time in his life just got a little more constricted.

It's doubtful that this study will change too many men's habits, but some are hopeful. New York Times columnist Lisa Belkin said, "I would hope that somehow it equalizes relationships of sexes."

Fight Jet Lag: Don't Eat?

If you're getting ready to cross time zones, new research suggests that fasting may help you deal with jet lag. While it's true that light regulates the circadian rhythm, an internal clock that determines when you sleep, wake, and eat, there may be a second internal clock that takes over when your body thinks food is scarce. It takes 16 hours of fasting to kick this clock into gear, and manipulating this clock by denying yourself food may help to adjust to a new time zone. Scientists experimented with this concept by offering food to mice only during times when they were supposed to be sleeping. Eventually, the mice that adjusted to this new eating schedule remained awake at nighttime in order to eat. Since we are mammals too, scientists think this strategy may work on humans as well.

It may be worth a try if you're traveling across the globe, but personally, I think not eating is a bad idea. Not only will it screw up your metabolism, but it'll make you cranky, dizzy, and give you a headache, which will only worsen your symptoms of jet lag.

Group Therapy: OMG! I'm Pregnant!

I have just found out that I am pregnant! For the first time in my 24 years of existance, I am having a pregnancy scare that has actually turned to a pregnancy reality. I am 8 weeks in but out of my mind thinking what I should do. The situation I am in becomes bit harder because I have only been dating my boyfriend for 3 months, and we have not known each other for more than 4 months. We met in Europe on a school trip we were both attending, and fell in love there. Back in the US we started a relationship that my family does not know about, and I have been trying to keep from them until I know this is a serious and lasting relationship.

My boyfriend already has a daughter from a previous relationship, and he seems to be like a good father and a great family man. Although he is very new to my life, I have a great amount of respect and affection towards him and I have fallen in love with him in our short time together. I am at a crossroads with the news that I am pregnant because we are not married (my family is very traditional, and having a baby outside of marriage is a big no no for them,) I have also just started the first year of my masters degree two semesters ago, and most importantly I am not mentally or financially ready for a baby yet.

I have looked into my options, such as abortion, but he wants to have the baby and I am not so sure yet. I am running against my biological clock here as the further into the pregnancy I get, the more difficult this decision will be. Please readers, help me with some unbiased and judgement-free guidance for my situation. Thanks!

With Winter around the corner (or perhaps rearing its ugly head already), I’m sure that a majority of FitSugar readers are experiencing cooler weather and shorter days. With this in mind, I thought a great topic to discuss this week is seasonal affective disorder.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that is cyclical and seasonal, meaning it comes and goes at the same time every year. According to the Mayo Clinic, most people who have seasonal affective disorder have symptoms that start in the Fall and continue into the Winter months. Less often, people suffer from seasonal affective disorder that causes depression in the Spring into the Summer months. Keep reading to learn more about it.
