Tips For Planning a Bachelorette Party

If you've been called on to plan a bachelorette party, you probably want to make it very memorable for the bride to be. But making the fun effortless requires a lot of effort beforehand! Here are some tips on how to prepare a night out on the town or a weekend getaway to celebrate a loved one's impending marriage!

Get the bride's expectations regarding: location, guest list, exotic dancers (are they banned or encouraged?).
Set a date: Send an email to the guests with a couple suggested dates, and settle on one that works for most.
Do some research: If you're traveling, find an affordable hotel and think about keeping prices down by sharing rooms. Think about calling a club you plan to attend ahead of time, so you can get on the guest list.
Set a budget: Based on what you found, estimate the cost. Make sure everyone is on the same page. Talking money can be awkward, but it's much better to be upfront so everyone can be carefree later.
Pool your resources for perks: Does your friend's uncle own a restaurant? Does your co-worker own a limo service? Call in any favors.
Make the plans: Send out invitations. If it's a getaway, send an email itinerary with all the crucial information and include links for more information.
Get people excited before the day: Forward fun reviews about the hotel you're staying in. Email an online slideshow of pictures of the bride and her friends throughout the years.

Bachelorette parties come in all shapes and sizes (as do male strippers). Some brides want relaxing girls' getaways, while others go for wild and crazy Vegas-style parties.

A wedding calls for a celebration, and the bachelorette party is an opportune time to spend some quality time with your good friends, but celebrating a friend's impending end to singledom could be time-consuming and expensive if it involves going somewhere. There's the cost of the flight out, hotel, dinners, drinks, cabs. . .

So I'm curious, have you ever skipped a bachelorette party you were invited to because it didn't work with your budget or schedule, or do you always make them a priority?

Group Therapy: Maid of Honor/Bachelorette Party Pickle

I am having a mini panic attack about my sister's wedding and need some advice. I'm her maid of honor but we don't really get along - the only reason she asked me to be in her wedding is because I'm her only sister. We just had the bridal shower, which was fine except for behind-the-scenes drama with another bridesmaid, but now I'm worrying about the bachelorette party.

I am a teetotaler and will be the only one not drinking at the bachelorette party. Since I'm the MOH, I'm the one who is supposed to plan everything, but I just don't feel comfortable being around alcohol all weekend. My sister and I have a very strained relationship as it is, but I feel like she'd almost have more fun if I wasn't there. Can I back out of the bachelorette party? Would that cause an even bigger rift than we already have? I just don't know what to do!

Dear Poll: Would You Have a Joint Bachelor/Bachelorette Party?

Living it up with your closest friends one last time before taking the trip down the aisle is a big part of getting married. Most brides and grooms plan their bachelor/bachelorette parties months in advance, and they're usually events that are talked about years later.

While it's customary to have single sex soirees, some couples - Fergie and Josh for example who partied it up together last night in LA - opt to have a joint bachelor/bachelorette party. I've never been to one myself, but I think it'd be a blast to join forces like that - the more the merrier! Since the choice is yours, tell me . . .

Dear Sugar,

My long-time boyfriend’s only sister is getting married next year and she asked me to be her maid of honor. I’m absolutely thrilled and honored to be so involved with her wedding, as she’s an amazing woman. That being said, we are friendly, but we’re not best friends. In general, the bride-to-be doesn’t have any close friends outside of her family because she and her fiancé live a pretty isolated lifestyle - I think she asked me because she didn't have anyone else to ask.

This puts me in a really weird position when it comes to planning pre-wedding activities because the bride-to-be isn’t the party type. I want this genuinely sweet woman to have an amazing time celebrating her last days as a single girl but I have no idea what to plan for her bachelorette party. Dear Maid of Honor to Be Betsy,

Being someone's maid of honor is a great privilege, but it also comes with its fair share of pressure too. Since she doesn't have a large circle of friends and she's not the partying type, why don't you set up a spa day followed by a nice dinner out for her bachelorette party? Celebrating your last days of singledom doesn't need to be all about strip clubs, penis paraphernalia and alcohol; it can be just as fun to relax with family. If she doesn't want to go out at all, another fun option is to organize a potluck dinner followed by a night of girly movies in your sweatpants. Something to keep in mind: bachelorette parties don't have to be girl only events so you could always throw her a co-ed party!

The best advice I can give you is to listen to the clues she gives out and go from there. If you take her personality into play, I'm sure anything you plan will be a great way to ring in her new wife status! Have fun!

Group Therapy: Dealing With a Bridezilla (and Her Mom)

My best friend asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding, and of course, I accepted without hesitation. The maid of honor and my best friend's mother planned the bachelorette party, but only days before the scheduled party date. The other bridesmaids live several hours away and because of the last-minute planning were unable to come. It also happened to fall on my grandmother's birthday. My grandfather recently passed away with cancer, and since then my grandmother has been having a very difficult time. I felt that I should be there for my grandmother (who is turning 74), especially since this is the first one since my grandfather passed away.

The day of the bachelorette party, my best friend's mom called and asked me to reconsider. She said my friend's feelings were hurt because only two bridesmaids were able to go. She also said that this was a "once in a lifetime" thing, and that birthdays can be celebrated every year. Now, my best friend and her mother are mad at me because I didn't go to the party. Obviously I couldn't control the fact that the other bridesmaids couldn't go. Not to mention, my friend has two bridal showers coming up this month, I assured them I would be at and happy to help with. But apparently that wasn't good enough.

Was I so wrong to pass up on an all-night drinking/clubbing fest for the sake of celebrating my widowed grandmother's birthday? I understand that this was a special event for my friend, but my family is important to me. What would you all do in a situation like this?

There is no question that bachelorette parties are a ton of fun, but they have their cheesy moments too. Some women opt for a low-key girls getaway, but others go all out, dressing up the bride in a veil and adorning her in as much penis paraphernalia as they can get their hands on!
