Susan Lucci traded her soap opera job for another daytime TV role today, cohosting The View. Today, All My Children ended after 41 years on TV, and Susan, who has been there from the beginning as Erica Kane, was on hand to reminisce. She couldn't hold back tears, sitting in front of an audience of super fans, and I have to say, as someone who grew up watching AMC, I got a little teary eyed, too. Susan Lucci will retire Erica Kane from daytime TV tomorrow. She may be a fictional character, but Erica Kane's icon status rivals that of Elizabeth Taylor partly because both women really loved to get married. While Elizabeth Taylor married six men in seven marriages, All My Children's Erica married six different men in seven marriages, while also racking up a total of four invalid marriages. The complicated story ends tomorrow, when ABC airs its final episode of the soap after more than 40 years. Our favorite game show, talk show, and soap-opera stars attended the 38th Daytime Emmy Awards last night, and it was a bittersweet night for fans of canceled soaps All My Children and One Life to Live. Last night was the end of an era for AMC star Susan Lucci, who's played Erica Kane since 1970 and has been a staple at the awards show since its inception. Despite having been nominated for her AMC role 21 times at the awards show, she only won the title of outstanding lead actress in a drama series once, in 1999. Susan Lucci will say goodbye to soap opera stardom after four decades this September when All My Children goes off the air. Stopping by other daytime staple The View today, she discussed her new book, All My Life, and her career playing Erica Kane - a character married over 10 times, while Susan's been married for 41 years! Colin Egglesfield's Surprising Past Role on All My Children

Tom Cruise look-alike Colin Egglefield is on his way to becoming a household name thanks to his role in Something Borrowed (out today), but he's a familiar face to fans of Melrose Place and All My Children. Before the 38-year-old landed a part in the high-profile rom-com, he played one particularly bizarre character on AMC: Erica Kane's aborted fetus. Oh, yes.

In 1973, right after abortion had been legalized in America, the soap opera broke ground when star Erica Kane had an abortion. As a rising model, Erica decided a baby would end her career. The story line was extremely bold and relatable even by today's standards, considering TV shows and movies still avoid portraying women exercising their right to choose, but it took an insanely unrealistic turn three decades later.

In 2005, Erica discovered that a well-known fertility doctor performed her 1973 abortion, but then he implanted her aborted embryo into his own wife using, of course, a revolutionary procedure. Not surprisingly this embryo, now grown man Josh Madden, found his way back to Pine Valley. The gimmicky rewrite upset fans who appreciated the daring portrayal of abortion 30 years before.

From 2005 to 2009, Colin embodied the controversial character Josh Madden. His take on the role? "It's kind of funny because when people ask me who I am on the show, I like to say, 'I'm the abortion of Erica Kane.' Or, technically, I think it's a 'transportion.'" Now you're getting technical?

Do You Have a Favorite Soap Opera?

Shocking news hit lovers of Pine Valley today - ABC announced it's canceling All My Children! Erica Kane and her many husbands, lovers, friends, and enemies will say goodbye in September, and they aren't the only casualties. One Life to Live will take its last breath in January. Considering the soaps have been on for a combined total of 83 years, many fans will be sad, including me. When I was little, my mom used to tape AMC faithfully, and we would watch it at night, sometimes catching up with multiple episodes in a row. I started watching the show so young (don't worry, she fast-forwarded all the bedroom scenes) that I think it took me a few years to realize Tad, Dixie, Adam, Brooke, Opal, and everyone else weren't real people living their unusually dramatic lives.

As of next year, only four network soap operas will be left: Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, The Young and The Restless, and The Bold and the Beautiful. Do you have a sentimental favorite?
