The How-To Lounge: New Avenues to Meet People

Meeting new guys is not all that hard - just head out to your local pub for a drink and smile a lot! But meeting quality people who you’d actually want to interact with sober and introduce to your friends is another matter entirely. And while throwing out suggestions like going to a bar or starting up conversations at your gym can be helpful for some, most of us have been there and done that. Get the word out there. Email your friends and ask your mom to talk to her friends. It may sound desperate, but try to think of it as practical. At least you know they’ll all be looking out for your well-being.
Do the online dating thing. I know for some the idea of meeting someone online seems weird or even embarrassing, but the days of online dating as taboo are over! Embrace the tools you have at your disposal, because you won't know until you try!
Try a dating event like a singles' night or a speed dating dinner. They may not have the highest success rates, but you’ll know everyone there is looking for a relationship, and that, my friends, is potential.
Take a class. School is one of the best places to meet new people. You’re forced to interact on a weekly basis without the stresses and pressures of work. Plus, you might actually learn something!
And finally, say yes to the strange requests from your friends and family. Like when your mom asks you to go to her best friend’s sister’s son’s birthday, do it. Or when your friend wants to go to a themed party, go for it. These are the random occasions that make up the stories that start with “It was totally unexpected . . .”

Yes, it’s all about taking chances, but why not? We’re not talking brain surgery here!

Fun Ways to Get Together With the Girls

Sometimes it seems like we spend so much time focusing on new ways to go on a date or enjoy time with our guy that we forget there's an entire world of ideas for spending time with just our girlfriends. So in support of hanging with your ladies, I've come up with some ideas to make for a memorable time. But feel free to weigh in with other ideas of your own!

Host a good old-fashioned cocktail party with a signature drink and appetizers. Spice it up by asking your friends to each bring their favorite dessert. When you're not munching on finger foods, you can indulge your sweet tooth.
Get active. Slip on your tennis shoes and hit the courts, or pick a safe trail in your town and go for a hike. If guys can have pick-up football games, why can't girls have impromptu sunset strolls?
Take turns giving dinner parties and trading recipes. It's a fun way to bond and learn something new!

Since most of us are trying to save money or can't take a few days off work for a vacation whenever we feel like it, try saving up to splurge on a cabin or house by the beach for a weekend together. It's a great way to actually relax for a while.
Try something completely out of your element! You can take a group self-defense class or sailing lessons. Exploring something new together is a great way to bond with your girls!
Throw an in-home dance party. You don't need a DJ or a full bar, just an iPod and your favorite bottle of wine. There's nothing like getting completely silly with your friends when there's no one around to watch!

And don't forget the Sex and the City night fall-back plan when all else fails. All it takes is a couple hours of good girl talk and a few hearty laughs to create the perfect get-together with your friends!

Take advantage of all this season has to offer and spice up your dating routine. While Winter might be about holing yourself up inside with bundles of blankets and a hearty meal, Summer is all about adventure and pleasure. It’s concert season! I’m sure at least one band or singer you’ve been dying to see is making their way to a venue near you right now. Interest in music is a great way to bond and a fantastic show will always make for a memorable date.
Grabbing dinner and catching the newest blockbuster is a safe date, but why not kick it up a notch in true Summer style and make it a picnic? Many counties countrywide offer movie nights in the park. There’s nothing more romantic, and all it requires is a blanket and some homemade sandwiches!
Warm weather means festivals and fairs. Keep your date casual, but totally classic with a trip to your county or state fair. Ride the Ferris wheel, check out the livestock, enjoy food on a stick, and let him prove his affection by winning you a giant, stuffed cartoon character.
Do the obvious and host a potluck BBQ. Getting a group together to enjoy Summer’s bounty of refreshing chow is a great way to get to know someone in a different setting, while staying in the comfort of your own home.

Whatever you do, don’t be afraid to do something different. Your date will appreciate you for thinking outside of the box.

Dear Poll: Will You Try Anything Once?

When it comes to food, some of us are picky eaters while others are willing to try anything once. I often wonder if the same sentiment holds true in our personal lives as well. Though I’m a woman who believes you shouldn’t knock something until you’ve given it a go, I’m also not willing to try anything just for the sake of trying it. Quail eggs, skydiving, and dating extreme-sports enthusiasts really aren’t my things, and I don’t need to try them all to know that. Or maybe I’m actually being close minded. I guess I’m not a try-anything-once kind of gal but what about you? Will you try anything once?

It was written in the second person ("You are about to enter a cave...") and let you choose your own adventure ("If you decide to start back home, turn to page 4..."). Here are some rejected titles. Three Adventurous Americans Missing in Iran

Next time you go traipsing around Iraq's Kurdistan, make sure you bring a map and stay far away from the Iranian border. Today, American diplomats with the help of Swiss officials are trying to locate three missing Americans who went hiking in Iraq's Kurdish region and accidentally crossed an unmarked border with Iran.

Iranian TV says the three have been accused of illegally entering Iran. The Swiss, who represent the US interests in Iran since there are no formal relations, met with officials in Tehran today, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave reporters her two cents back in the US:

"We call on the Iranian government to help us determine the whereabouts of the three missing Americans and return them as quickly as possible."

The three missing hikers, who have lived in Western Europe and the Middle East, are being described by friends as "fiercely intellectual" individuals with "wanderlust for travel." I hope they get out of their latest adventure alive.
