Kids in Gaza Mark the End of Ramadan With a Bang

These pictures of kids in Gaza celebrating the end of Ramadan stopped me in my tracks this morning. The celebration, Eid al-Fitr, marks the end of Ramadan, the 30-day period of daylight abstinence from food and drink observed by Muslims. It's a three-day "festival of the fast-breaking," a joyous time to visit friends and relatives and to give to those in need ensuring that everyone will have a holiday meal - especially important this year as more and more feel financial woes.

The kids in these pictures are clearly having a great time, celebrating the end of the fast, but the guns. Oh, the guns give more than a little pause. While yes, kids have played cops and robbers since the beginning of time (give or take) the adult way these children handle the weapons suggests the real cost of their turbulent environment. A study showed that a crushing 98 percent of children in Gaza have experienced or witnessed war trauma. Most children, who number almost half of the residents of Gaza, have been tear-gassed, had their homes searched, or seen shootings and explosions. No wonder they seem so at home with their arsenal.

It makes me want to replace those guns with some Basboosa (a traditional post-Ramadan dessert made with semolina and yogurt, soaked in a rose water syrup.) That would certainly be sweeter.

Britons Waste Pounds of Good Food

One third of all food bought in Britain ends up in the trash. That's almost $20 million worth of food each year.

According to a recent study that includes 1.3 million unopened yogurts, 5,500 whole chickens and 440,000 ready to eat meals. In addition, $2 billion worth of the discarded food was totally edible.

The news caught the attention of England's Environment Minister Joan Ruddock. She argued that when global food shortages are so dire, the wastefulness is more shocking.

And as for the environmental hook? Ruddock explained that "there are climate change costs to all of us of growing, processing, packaging, transporting, and refrigerating food that only ends up in the bin." In fact some people want to put pollution on shopper's grocery bills!

Should governments start advocating leftovers as a cheaper and greener option? Do you think about the "children starving" around the world when you don't finish a meal? Does the environment cross your mind?

SkinnyMarie free-for-all: I am a huge Pittsburgh Penguins fan (sorry Mitchel they are staying in the 'burgh) and thoroughly enjoy watching Jarkko Ruutu and his antics. But some of the funniest things are their pranks that they play on each other that get out into the media. Marc-Andre Fleury gave Colby Armstrong a scare when he hid in his equipment bag. Kris Letang's pant legs and shirt sleeves of a suit were sewn shut and he almost missed a team flight. Ryan Whitney got a dead mouse put in his skate during a practice and didn't even notice. Alright, back to my TPS reports . . .

Keep your lady business as dry as possible. Moisture down there is a breeding ground for yeast
If you're a swimmer, be sure to change your swimsuit frequently. Wear breathable cotton underwear (or make sure your underwear has a cotton crotch) and stay far away from synthetic materials such as polyester
Avoid wearing tight fitting jeans, pants, shorts or nylons and always sleep without your underwear on - you need to let your lady business breathe
Contrary to popular belief, douching is bad for you. Using feminine hygiene products such as sprays and feminine cleaners, perfumed toilet paper, perfumed tampons or panty liners will also irritate your vagina and disrupt its natural pH balance, which can cause an infection
Unfortunately, some women are prone to yeast infections, especially while taking antibiotics so if you fall into that category, be sure to eat a diet rich in live culture and probiotics such as yogurt and Kambucha
If you have the symptoms of a yeast infection, burning, itching or thick white discharge, consult your doctor asap

You Asked: Are Nuts a Healthy Snack?

Dear Sugar--
In the spirit of bikini season, I am trying to watch my weight. I am not going crazy with dieting, but I am trying to make better choices throughout the day since there is always so much junk food around my office.

Everyday, like clockwork, I crave a snack around 2:30-3:00. I have heard nuts are a good way to keep my energy up, but am I hurting my diet efforts by snacking on roasted peanuts? I know they are heavy in fat, but will natural fat work against me? Do you have any other tips? --Snack Time Sally

Dear Snack Time Sally--
I can completely sympathize with you. Taming your hunger is no small feat, so I applaud you for taking a proactive approach. As unfair as it is, some people can snack away on everything from cookies to chips and not gain a pound, but others aren't as lucky. Now is a great time to step up your efforts with summer right around the corner!

Nuts are a healthy way to fill you up, but you are correct, they can be fattening. With that said, you don't need to avoid them altogether, rather limit your intake. Since nuts are so easy to snack on, and even though they contain the "good fat," keep your nut intake to a handful at the most. For a full fat/calorie breakdown, click here.

Bring snacks from home to help keep your diet in check. I always recommend string cheese, fresh and or dried fruit, whole wheat crackers, baby carrots, sliced celery, jicama, and low fat yogurt. Remember to stay hydrated and most importantly, keep up your willpower. Good luck!
