World of Baywatch

I always wondered what the appeal was of World of Warcraft- until now. I didn't realize these gamer dudes were recreating Baywatch and getting their best beachside frolic on. It all looks fun, but this is one Hoff short of the real deal. Recreate him and we're good to go.

Listen in on a domestic dispute between a very dedicated gamer and his very frustrated parents. Prior to this intervention, the <strike>boy</strike> big baby was playing along with his buddies and had a microphone attached to him. The following is what his friends overheard on the line...

And who knew they were inspired by some of our favorite dance superstars? MC Hammer, Wacko Jacko, comedian turned Chippendale's hunk Chris Farley, and Napoleon Dynamite to name a few.
World Of Warcraft Is The New Birth Control Pill

The old man demanding too much sex? Feign headaches no more! World of Warcraft is "an online role playing game and birth control device that has been discovered by milions of people all over the world...and has been effectively proven to reduce the male libido by allowing users to join guilds, make and sell virtual pouches, and fight centaurs." (How awesome is that--not only will he not want to have sex with you, you won't want to have sex with your centaur-lovin' boyfriend!)

Laptops & Role Playing: Is Technology the Answer to Poverty?

Though Dungeons and Dragons has weirdly wormed its way into the campaign, technology is popping up worldwide as not an escape from the drudgery of every day, but as an escape from poverty. Laptops and role-playing games are a double click of cure.

One Laptop Per Child, a program designed to bring technology and opportunity to kids in developing nations has completely fulfilled that mission in the tiny South Pacific island of Niue. Every single kid, 100 percent of them, now has access to the Internet on the inexpensive, rugged, waterproof (and pretty cute!) laptops. Though Niue is a developing nation, they've been ahead of the technology curve - in 2003 they were the first territory to offer free wireless to all residents.

Once you've mastered the web, can gaming be a golden ticket? Oh yes. To find out how, read more.

Almost half a million people in developing nations make their living playing online games like World of Warcraft, earning virtual goods, and the selling them to other players for decidedly unvirtual money. It's called gold-farming and its growing despite the industry's efforts to crack down. Based in China for the most part, the business garners $500 million, though the true size is hard to estimate.

Gamers gold-farm by offering services like "power-leveling" where one can pay a gamer to take one's character to a higher level faster, outsourcing one's hobbies, as it were. The game's service size is comparable to India's outsourcing industry, though relatively few know the former exists. Why do people pay to have someone else play a game for them? Says one researcher, "When you get people with more money than time and time than money the two will find a way to meet." Paying someone to play World of Warcraft for you!? Whatever next.

That said, has technology become the new Esperanto, a language the whole world speaks? Is access to it the antidote to poverty and crucial to survival?

Group Therapy: So Many Issues ...

After two years of marriage, my husband and I finally bought our first house together a few months ago. Immediately, he stopped showing interest in sex, and started gaining even more weight (he was already overweight). He doesn't help around the house and I don't really mind, because I enjoy my wifey role. But even asking him to clean the cat box gets a groan - like it's so physical. This is combined with the fact that he stays up way past my bedtime to play World of Warcraft for hours, or he spends the evening on the couch. He hides his fast-food wrappers in the garbage like an addict, while I eat good food and remain very trim. We have gone around and around about the computer games, and the lack of physical activity and poor diet. I have tried to encourage a healthier lifestyle, buying good foods and asking him to work out with me. But he'll gain it back just about as soon as he loses - and he has a physical job. And I'm as concerned about his health as his appearance - the excess weight causes him to snore and he has no energy. The last time we had sex, all of which I've been initiating since we moved in, he lost his erection and we couldn't finish - a first for him. And then last night, he went off to play his World of Warcraft while I slept and the cat woke me up by getting sick. So I took her into the office and caught him masturbating. I have no idea what was on the screen, and of course my imagination is running wild. I'm a smart, sexy professional and I'm starting to feel very put off by him, and wanting to spend less and less time with him. What else could I be doing?

Illinois Facility Is First to Offer Treatment For Web Addiction

One double-click too many? An Illinois facility has become the first to offer in-patient treatment for Internet addiction. The cases have been serious - like one patient who wouldn't shower or eat for days, and play computer games until dawn, and another patient so addicted to Internet shopping had boxes shipped to her in the treatment center.

A therapist said:

It's very common for others not to believe that Internet addiction is real. In fact, the person who is addicted to his or her computer is going to have the same "high" as the drug addict who is about to go see their drug dealer. Both are escapes from the real world.

Though kicking cigarettes or booze might just be a question of staying clear of them, with Internet addiction, it's not so easy. The most challenging aspect of the recovery process is the wide availability of the Internet, whether it is on a computer or a cell phone - not to mention those who have to use it for work. "Cocaine and other illegal drugs are not at the library or a coffee shop. Computers are everywhere."

Interestingly, when it comes to girls and boys, there's a difference in addiction. To find out how, read more.

Women Internet addicts are mostly grappling with shopping or chat-room addictions. Men go for Internet gaming (think World of Warcraft) gambling, and the ever popular porno. The youngest patient the clinic has served was 13 years old. Authorities estimate that the problem is just in its infancy - and expect between 15 and 30 million people will be diagnosed in the future.

Have we gone overboard declaring everything to be an "addiction" - or is it possible that any commodity can be abused and require treatment?

Source
