Why Is "Jewelry Television" Selling Wood?

This is clearly a joke, but it was filmed by real Jewelry Television spokespeople. They thought a little false advertising could go a "long" way. Not so much. Is it just me, or are they jacking J.T.'s "D*ck In A Box" concept? That is, "On this very special occasion, give the gal you love the gift that'll go the distance. Give her the gift of wood." Lame.

Do You Knock on Wood?

Ever since I could remember, I've been "knocking on wood." I learned it from my mother actually - she is an avid wood knocker. It's something we do to prevent something bad from happening. I'll say something like, "I've never gotten pregnant while on the Pill, knock on wood." Or "It looks like it'll be sunny for our BBQ this weekend, knock on wood." And I don't just say "knock on wood," I also find wood and literally knock my knuckles on it. It's definitely one of my superstitions, and in some way, I feel like if I don't do it, I'll have bad luck.

So where did this weird little phenomenon of "knocking on wood" or "touching wood" start anyway? The origin isn't really known, but in the early 1800s, kids used to play a game called "Tiggy-touch-wood," where they had to touch wood in order to be "safe." It could be that the phrase stuck all these years.

I've also heard that people used to "knock on wood" to awaken the kind tree fairies that lived in the woods in addition to preventing the Devil from hearing your bad comments.

I came across a children's book called "Knock on Wood, " so I know I'm not the only one who believes in this, but now I'm curious to know - do you "knock on wood?"

Steve Wood: Douchebag of the Day

Meet Steve Wood from VH1's groan-inducing new reality show Tough Love. He describes himself as a "master matchmaker" and says that you need him; I figure women need this guy like they need a hole in their heads. Describing single women with contempt as "desperate, delusional, and baby hungry," you'd have to be clinically insane to take this douche's advice. I'm pretty sick of this, "Hey, stupid woman, I'm going to insult you while pretending it's for your own good" trend in self-help. It's straight-up hatred, women. Don't take the bait! I bet he works in tandem with Mystery from The Pickup Artist who gives advice to players on how to play these women. Hint #1: Insult her - they like that!

Condoleezza Rice Spends Her Time on Tiger Wood's Trail

If you've been dying to know what Condoleezza Rice has been up to since she retired the power suits, she'll be happy to tell you! Last weekend the former Secretary of State enjoyed the pastime of many of her fellow retirees - golf. For the first time, she got herself tickets to the Masters, and she chronicled the "heartbreaks and highlights" on the Daily Beast.

Condi was cheering for Tiger:

As the time approached, my assistant Anne said, “They want to know who you want to follow.” Borrowing language from Anne’s generation, I said, “Duh?”

I know Tiger from our Stanford connection. I once sat with him at a Stanford-Duke basketball game. Stanford won on a buzzer beater, and we stormed the court together. With that kind of bonding, whom else would I pull for? I had decided that if Tiger did not win, I would champion the cause of Phil Mickelson (met him at the White House and he’s a really nice guy); Stuart Cink (met him in Atlanta and he’s a really nice guy); or Anthony Kim (haven’t met him but I like his swagger).

So Condi likes to bond with golfers with swagger, duh!

Stranger Than Fiction: Car Crashes Into Couple's Bedroom

Imagine if you will, sleeping soundly in your bed with your boyfriend. Maybe you're spooning, maybe he's snoring, you're dreaming of kittens ice-skating...whatever.

Suddenly, a car crashes through your bedroom. Motor fluid sprays in your now-awake faces as you both struggle to get out from under the weight of the car, which now lies on top of you.

Well, that's exactly what happened to two Nevada college students last week when a drunk driver, thinking he was headed into the home his ex-girlfriend now shares with a new boyfriend, drove instead into their bedroom at 4 a.m.

Only Trent Wood's lower body was pinned by the car, but his screaming girlfriend Kristin Palmer's entire body was pinned. In less than an hour, thanks to neighbors who called 911, emergency workers removed the car from the couple. Wood says he was ecstatic he and his girlfriend only suffered minor scrapes and burns, and not paralysis as he feared.

He told a reporter, "When you experience something like that there's no limits anymore, you can try to do whatever you want to do. We feel like we have more of a purpose, like we were meant to live." I bet the drunk driver, who is up sh*t creek without a paddle (or car), has the opposite sentiment.

Plan 9 From Outer Space: The Best Movie Dialogue Ever

Depending on how you look at it, Ed Wood Jr. was either one of the worst filmmakers who ever lived or, as I see it, one of its geniuses. It takes work to make bad movies this bad. And from his magnum opus Plan 9 From Outer Space to his sensitive (and autobiographical) look into crossdressing, Glen or Glenda, this dude knew how to write some dialogue. How can you argue with the following line? "We are all interested in the future, because that is where we are all going to spend the rest of our lives." He's right! Lord Of The Puppet Strings

Elijah Wood made an appearance on "Yo Gabba Gabba" to teach kids how to do a little jig he calls "The Puppet Master." It resembles something one might do in a group aerobics class, which isn't all too strange. However, there's something about that one-eyed critter in the back row that gives me the heebie-jeebies and makes me feel a little sorry for Elijah. At least we know his success hasn't gone to his head yet.

Plan 9 From Outer Space: Worst Movie Ever?

This ~~fiasco~~ masterpiece by Ed Wood, Jr. has been called the worst movie ever made. Plan 9 is about aliens who want to stop humans from creating a weapon that will destroy the universe. How to do this? Through Plan 9, which involves the resurrection of zombies to get the planet's attention. Bela Lugosi (the famous Dracula) was in it for money cuz he was a morphine addict at the end of his life, but he died before the film ended. Problem solved: just have a chiropractor skulk around covering his face throughout the entire film. There's bad--and then there's craptastic.

Have You Ever Had to Use Self-Defense?

I have to admit that I've never taken the time to enroll in a serious self-defense course. Luckily, I've never been in a situation requiring it (knock on wood!), but I think it's about time I sign up!

Yesterday I posted a comical vintage ad for a book on secret self-dense tips. It got me thinking: how many of you have taken a self-defense course and had the unfortunate opportunity to test it out?

PoliWood Asks: Should Celebs Get Political?

Wag the Dog director Barry Levinson has tongues wagging at the Tribeca Film Festival with a new documentary called Poliwood, which premiered this weekend. As the name suggests, the film explores what happens when Hollywood celebrity gets all smooshed together with DC politics. Featuring celeb cameos from Spike Lee, Josh Lucas, Anne Hathaway, and more, the doc goes behind the scenes of the 2008 campaign, including the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.

The film is backed by the Creative Coalition, a nonprofit group of politically active actors and other artsy types, so don't expect a straight-up skewering. But Levinson isn't afraid to insert his own perspective on the potential confusion that PoliWood promotes. He says,

"Well, I think what happened is, you have this television screen, and everything has to go through that screen - and at a certain point, I don't think that we can tell the difference between the celebrity and the politician. They both have to entertain us in some fashion."
