Group Therapy: Is Anyone Else Dealing With the Winter Blues?

Since the New Year, I have been feeling down and out. I didn't go anywhere over the holidays and my family downsized Christmas. I have a wonderful job that I love, but it's not a 9-5; it's something that I have to constantly think about and it's starting to wear me out. I know that there are people who don't have jobs right now, so I feel incredibly guilty even complaining about it, but at work I feel like a robot. In the mornings I have trouble getting out of bed. I feel like there is nothing to look forward to. It's Winter, it's January, and there isn't a vacation or holiday in sight. To make matters worse, I've totally lost my appetite and am having a hard time sleeping. How can I snap out of this downward funk before I spiral into a deep depression?

5 Things to Look Forward to This January

I've already been bombarded by friends telling me that they're suffering from post-holiday blues, and to be honest, I'm feeling it a little too. When it's dark and cold outside it's easy to get down, but there are some really fun things we can all look forward to this January. Check out my list below and if you think I've missed something, add your thoughts in the comments section - the more things to look forward to the better!

Even if you're not a sports fan, football playoffs are a fun excuse to get out of the house and meet new people, especially if you're single!
Most of us have a long weekend to look forward to just two weeks away - Martin Luther King Day falls early this year, Jan. 19.
Weekends away during the Winter can be just as fun as any Summer vacation. Bundle up and hit the slopes (or the lodge) and enjoy the snow while you can.
Most of us know someone with a January birthday, so blow it out this year! It's easy to hermit after the holidays so don't let your friends get the short end of the stick - make it a big celebration and get back into the swing of things before you get stuck in a rut.
If you need another excuse to celebrate, plan an inauguration party and watch history being made with close friends and family.

10 Tips For Surviving a Rainy Day

The rain just started in San Francisco, so if you're like me and struggling with how to survive the bad weather ahead, check out my 10 helpful tips to keep you sane this rainy season. And as always, if you have any suggestions to add to my list, please do so in the comments section below.

Be sure to weather-proof your leather and suede shoes and handbags. The rain can do a number on your nice accessories.
Invest in a cute pair of wellies!
Master your rainy day 'do. Nothing can ruin your mood faster than having a bad hair day, so have a go-to style that you can rely on when you know your hair won't cooperate!
Don't forget that men are more attracted to women's bodies during the Winter months, so embrace the season!
Just because it's gray outside doesn't mean you have to wear dark colors. If you brighten up your wardrobe, I'm sure it'll help brighten up your mood, too!

Own multiple umbrellas. It's easy to leave them places, so make sure you always have an extra at home or in your car.
Be sure to have a weather-resistant laptop bag.
Buy a good doormat this Winter. You don't want to track mud or water throughout your house.
Stock up on logs for your fireplace - you want to take care of that chore before the heavy rain starts!
It's easy to get a little blue when it's dark and dreary outside, so focus on the positives of a rainy day: cozy sweaters, a warm house, soothing soups, and hot bubble baths!

Winter Can Be So Cruel

The How-To Lounge: Cleaning Your Boots Before Winter

Since it's technically boot season, it's time to dust off last year's favorites and make them look like new again. For some tips on how to care for your leather boots, click here to read more

It's best to send your beloved shoes to a trusted cobbler as they are the pros.
Before you take the cleaning in your own hands, be sure to test a section of your boots to make sure you don't cause discoloration.
If you want to make them fresh yourself, your first order of business should be to deodorize your boots. Try rubbing a dryer sheet in the inside of your boots to neutralize the smell.
Remove dust with a dry but soft cloth.
Mix water with a mild soap like Dove and wipe your shoes with a damp cloth of that mixture. Do not use too much water as it's not good for your leather.
If you are cleaning patent leather, it's been said that in a pinch, you can remove fingerprints with a drop of vinegar mixed with warm water. Again, be sure to test a small patch before dousing the entire shoe.
Once you have cleaned away all your scuffs and nicks, wipe your shoes dry with a new dry cloth to prevent streak marks.
If your shoes need a sheen after cleaning, polish with a good quality leather polish.
If you haven't already weather treated your boots, be sure to do so before the first rain hits.

Beat Those Winter Blues

It's totally normal to be a little depressed in the Winter. It's gray, the sun sets before dinner, and the cold weather can make you never want to leave your house. For some people, Winter can cause a serious condition called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Symptoms can include feelings of depression, hopelessness, anxiety, social withdrawal, loss of energy, appetite changes, and oversleeping. Here are some ways to help beat the winter blues:

Purchase a sun lamp. Even artificial light can boost your spirit and inspire a sunny disposition.
Open your blinds and curtains to let what little light is outside shine in.
Have a bunch of houseplants or fresh-cut flowers in your home and workspace to remind you of Summer.
Practice yoga in a heated room. It feels great to be able to wear a tank top and sweat in the middle of Winter. Plus all the stretching will increase circulation and create endorphins to enhance your mood.
Find a way to embrace Winter. There are a bunch of different activities that involve snow so see which one appeals to you. You can ice skate, snowshoe, ski, snowboard, cross country ski or go sledding. Instead of pushing away Winter, if you can find a way to enjoy it, you'll be much happier.

If cold weather is your mortal enemy, you can embrace Winter by staying indoors too. Find a hobby that you love, so you won't feel sad, lonely or bored if you're stuck inside. You can knit, quilt, scrapbook, play an instrument, bake, read, write, or do something else you love.
Take a vacation and go somewhere warm. It'll give you something to look forward to and a few days in the sun will make you feel happier.
See a therapist. Talking about your feelings with a professional can be beneficial. They might also recommend going to see a psychiatrist if they think medication might be necessary.
