5 Tips For Sticking With Your New Year's Resolutions

Staying true to New Year's resolution is not easy, but it can be done. If you're struggling with the pledges you made, check out my five tips below for being successful in your 2009 resolutions.

Lean on your loved ones for support. If you can, ask a friend to pledge the same resolution you did and turn it into a friendly competition!

Leave yourself notes around the house, at work, and in your car to remind yourself of the commitment you made.

Don't give up if you skip a day of working out or if you cheat on your diet. Use your slip up as ammo to do better the next day.

Keeping a resolution takes a lot of dedication and hard work, so reward yourself on a weekly basis - if you can look forward to a payoff, chances are you'll be more successful in reaching your goal.

Keep pushing. It's hard to break a bad habit, but if you stay dedicated and on track of your success, it'll be easier to make your resolution more of a new way of life rather than a quick fix.

Do you have any tricks to keep your New Year's resolution? If so, tell us your secrets below!

Source

Most Common New Year's Resolution From '08

After asking if you kept your New Year's resolutions from last year, I was surprised to see how many of you didn't make resolutions at all. Sure, being the best you can be every day is ideal, but most of us, myself included, need some incentive in order to make big changes in our lives.

For those of you who did make resolutions last year, below are the most commonly pledged changes in 2008:

Weight loss

Smoking

Living a healthier life

Do you think you'll be able to keep those going in '09?

Source

Tough Question No. 5: Have You Lost/Gained Some Weight?

Weight is one of those topics that makes almost everyone feel uncomfortable. Calling out a person's weight gain or loss not only puts them on the spot, but it can easily do a number on their self-esteem. If Thanksgiving is the holiday that brings your family together, chances are you'll be seeing some relatives you haven't seen for a while, so if they comment on your weight, here are some ways to hold your own.

To see my responses for tough question number five, read more.

Looks are an easy thing to zero in on if you haven't seen someone in a long time, and most people tend to comment on weight. If it's not something you want to discuss, acknowledge their comments and quickly move the conversation along.

Weight fluctuation has a lot to do with diet and exercise, but personal issues can be another trigger. If someone comments on your noticeable weight loss, be short and say something like, "Yes, I guess I have lost a few pounds. It's been a very stressful Fall but I'm really looking forward to a great Thanksgiving dinner!" If you leave it at that, they shouldn't fish for any more details.

If you've admittedly gained a few pounds - 'tis the season! - and a relative approaches you about it, address it in a cheeky manner. Say something like, "Yes, I've been slacking a little, but now there's just more of me to love!" or "I'm embracing the holidays, Aunt Jessie - by Easter I'll be as slender as can be!"

If you've struggled with your weight, but you're finally where you want to be, take the compliments you're given this Thanksgiving. If you've worked hard to get back into your skinny jeans, be proud of yourself; reaching your goal weight is no small feat!

Have any of you had to face weight questions like this? If so, how did you handle it?

Source

What Kind of Pill Would You Concoct?

I don't know about you, but I couldn't be more excited that Oprah is back from her Summer vacation! If you caught yesterday's episode, Dr. Oz stopped by to talk medicine and answer viewers questions about some recent headlines; one of which was a pill to make you exercise. While the jury is still out as to whether or not it works, it got me thinking about miracle drugs. Just think how much easier our lives would be if we really could take a little pill to encourage us to work out, or for the sake of having fun take a dating pill, a beauty pill, a motivation pill, even a career building pill? So if you could develop something like that, tell me, what would you concoct?

Is Thinness a Matter of Envy Among Friends?

In an article for July's issue of Marie Claire, Sarah Ivens, editor in chief of OK! magazine, chronicles her weight-loss journey's disappointing effect on many of her female friendships. After being told she was obese by a nutritionist, Ivens committed to changing her unhealthy ways, but found her friends didn't share her positive attitude. She writes:

When I fessed up to my diet plan after week one, I was surprised that, instead of offering kinship and support, a few women were upset with me. . . . My sudden decision to restrain myself at the dinning table reflected badly on their decision - or inability - not to . . . The jealousy was palpable - especially when, after four weeks of trimming fat, sugar, and useless calories, I'd lost 10 pounds.

Though jealousy among women is not uncommon, we don't expect to find it amidst friends. But as we know, the standards of contemporary society have led many women to experience deep anxieties about their bodies, and surely such insecurities breed jealousy even in the company of good friends. So tell me, have you ever encountered experiences similar to Sarah's in your own circle of friends? Have your friends' bodies or body images affected your own?

Group Therapy: He Told Me to Lose Weight

I am very self-conscious, and dislike my body. My boyfriend knows that so when I found pictures of naked women on his phone it really upset me and made me feel like I wasn't thin enough or pretty enough. We got into a huge fight over it, and he said that if I didn't like myself that I should lose weight. When I asked him if that was what he wanted, he basically said that he wishes that I looked the way I did when we first started dating - I'm 5'3" and weigh 127 pounds, up from 115 pounds.

While I feel that losing weight would help with my self-esteem, I don't want to hear that he wishes I would too. He still says he loves me and my body, but then he tells me that he wants me to look differently. It makes me feel absolutely horrible. Now I don't even feel comfortable being naked in front of him. I want to know that he really does love me no matter what. I just don't know what to do. How should I deal with this situation?

[EDITOR'S NOTE: To be involved in more GROUP THERAPY, click here]

Dear Poll: Are You on the Stress Diet?

Many women want to do it all, but when there aren't enough hours in the day, we end up running on empty - literally. According to a recent article in the Daily Mail, a new type of eating disorder, "stressorexia," may be emerging amongst modern women. According to Dr Adrian Lord, consultant psychiatrist at the Cygnet Hospital in Harrow, England:

Stressorexia is not a scientific diagnosis that a doctor would make but anecdotally its symptoms are very prevalent among women.

The more women juggle, the more anxious and stressed out they become. Some say stressorexia starts with a missed lunch and spirals out of control from there, resulting in massive weight loss. When people are too preoccupied to eat, it makes perfect sense.

I'm the kind of person who never skips a meal - I become shaky and irritable - but I know many people who oftentimes look down at their watch and say, "oops, I forgot to eat lunch!" So ladies, even if you're having a stressful day at work or at home with the kids, do you ever fall victim to the "stress diet"?

Source

She Said It, We Didn't

InTouch Weekly reported that, when asked about her recent weight loss, Tara Reid replied, "I was filming in the middle of nowhere, and my hotel room had no room service. So when I wanted to eat, it was difficult."

The Price Is Right: Equal Opportunity Alien Employer

The Price Is Right is a sinking ship. I wonder how Bob Barker feels about this ridiculous showcase showdown storyline involving an overweight alien? If "E.L.T." really wanted to lose weight, she could just phone <strike>home</strike> Jenny. Ha.

As the the wikipedia entry notes, "Though no longer in the limelight as she once was, she continues to write and motivate." She does indeed. Enjoy!
