Stranger Than Fiction! Man Marries Video Game Character

This past Sunday a man known as "Sal9000" and his fiancé Nene Anegasaki vowed to stay together until death, or a power outage, do them part. You see Sal9000's new wife Nene happens to be a video game character in the addictive Nintendo DS game Love Plus. A priest, live audience, MC, and friends of the happy couple were also present at the event, and the bride's virtual maid of honor even gave a speech. A slideshow recounted how the couple met and teased Sal for being quite the player before he met Nene - he had lots of other video game girlfriends. The whole event was livecasted, and Boing Boing put together the video below so we could all witness this unique wedding.

This story might be the first time I've heard of someone marrying an anime character, but I have read about those who "marry" other inanimate objects. The term "objectum sexuals" describes people who feel attraction, arousal, love, and commitment for objects. One woman even held a ceremony in Paris and married the Eiffel Tower. Talk about nontraditional weddings.

Are Video Proposals Online Cowardly or Cute?

Last night Tumblr users signed on to see "Marissa Nystrom, will you marry me?" bannered across their dashboards, whether or not they followed proposer Justin Johnson's blog. The link goes to this genuinely thoughtful, romantic, and well-edited video, but I presume his girlfriend follows his blog. So the only reason I can see to link the video to the world is to consummate its place in the controversial genre of public marriage proposals.

Public proposals seem unabashedly confident at first, but only the most heartless, unafraid-to-make-a-scene askee would say no. Put it on video and not only is he not asking her in person, but he's putting pressure on her to say yes in front of the largest stage of all. And when it's online, you can't leave your audience behind.

Atheists and Marriage

Man-gagement Ring - Love It or Leave It?

Glancing at a man's ring finger to see if he's taken can only get you so far. While the presence of a ring tells you he's married, there's no way to know if he's engaged, since women don't typically get to put a ring on it. Well that's apparently changing.

According to ABC, man-gagement rings - engagement rings worn by men - are getting more and more popular. As one soon-to-be-groom says: "Now your game is over even sooner." Presumably many of these men are excited about showing off their "taken" status.

Sunday Confessional: She Has Post-Wedding Blues

We're scouring the juicy (but anonymous!) secrets posted on Truu Confessions and letting you weigh in. This week, a confessor admits that she's sad her wedding is over. She says:

"I have post-wedding blues. Not because I really want to keep planning a wedding and crap like that, but because now it's gone. That is one more thing checked off the list, and that means I am getting older. I wanted to be his wife. I didn't want to feel like I had nothing left to look forward to."

Love It or Leave It? Disney-Inspired Engagement Rings

Some girls never let go of their wish to be princesses, and thanks to designer Kristie Kelly, they don't have to. The Kirstie Kelly for Disney by Mouwad collection, shown at Bridal Week in New York, features six engagement rings and wedding bands that pay homage to Disney's leading princesses.

The engagement rings, named after Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella, Jasmine, Ariel, and Belle are supposed to be "subtle references to the personalities of each princess." For example, the baguettes and clean lines of the Ariel ring are supposed to reference the bold style of art deco and Ariel's "bold individuality."

Although I was never a fan of princesses, have no plans of getting married anytime soon, and would feel sheepish taking a leap into adulthood wearing a Disney-inspired engagement ring, I do fancy the look of the Sleeping Beauty ring. What do you feel about this collection?

Would You Bring a Girlfriend to a Wedding?

One of my single girlfriends, let's call her Francesca, is in a bind. Francesca was invited, with a guest, to a wedding that is happening this weekend. The bride allowed for a plus one because she knew there wouldn't be too many single guys at the wedding.

Francesca RSVP'd saying she would bring a guest, figuring she would invite either a love interest or a guy friend. Since then, she has dated two different guys, but things didn't work out with either of them. Francesca has gone through her pool of guy friends, but no one is available! She's thinking of bringing a girlfriend. Would you do that?

Très Bizarre: Wedding at Wal-Mart!

Hanging flower baskets and seasonal foliage sound like elements of a beautiful wedding setting. They're also part of Wal-Mart's lawn and garden department. One couple, Robert Vickrey and Crystal Newsome, decided that they might as well get married at Wal-Mart's in-store garden!

The newlyweds, who both work at Wal-Mart, didn't mind being in the store on their day off. Crystal, the deli manager, met Robert, the grocery department manager, on the job. They were also happy to share their special day with both family and co-workers.

Perhaps Wal-Mart will soon get into the wedding-hosting business. They already have plenty of aisles!

The Word "Fiancé": Love It or Leave It?

A friend of mine recently got engaged but shudders at using the word "fiancé" to refer to her affianced. It feels more natural to say "boyfriend" when talking about her husband-to-be. I propose that she go with something intentionally hokey, like "my intended." How do you feel about using the word fiancé?

Hotel Offers a Hangover-Themed Bachelor Party Package

I don't know if you've seen The Hangover, but I can't imagine aspiring to replicate the weekend those guys have, what with a live tiger in the bathroom, a live baby of mysterious origin, and a missing groom. But apparently, Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas thinks this pop culture reference will resonate with bachelors.

It's offering a Hangover-themed hotel package called Ultimate Hangover. Here's the sales pitch:

Some guys just can't handle Vegas, as demonstrated in the new motion picture The Hangover. But this town's easier to handle if you've got the tools to recover from a hangover of your own.

Forum Tower Royal suite? Check. (Also, checked for tigers.) Food to take the edge off? Check. Use your $50 Serendipity 3 food credit for the Hangover Omelet, loaded with bacon, French fries, mushrooms and cheddar. Hair of the dog? Check – use your $50 pool credit for a round of bloody Marys at the Garden of the Gods pool complex.

I'm not gonna argue with the power of a hangover omelet, but if that uses up the entire $50 food credit, those mushrooms had better be truffles. Still, I have to give them points for creativity. What amenities would you want after a wild weekend in Vegas?
