Women are soft and gentle, but they hit things. If your wife hits something in a Volkswagen, it doesn’t hurt you very much. VW parts are easy to replace.
It's really quite amazing how us women get lower insurance rates, then! I mean, God, if you hurt your car so many times and hit people's cars and stuff, you'd figure they would have tried to
insure us a little more. Kind of like they do with the men. Odd.
I'm assuming this advert was under the supervision of Bill Bernbach considering he was behind the masterful turnaround for the VW image with is idiosyncratic, witty campaign. It's humorous
for its time, but it's sad people thought that way (and still do for some).
This really makes me excited for season 3 of Mad Men, which, it's rumored, will finally be crossing into the publication of Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique. Part of the genius of the
show is how they address the issues behind the ads like the one in this post.
I think it's sad that this was a real ad. I don't find it funny, because people really did think this way, and some apparently still do. Then again, i'm not a big fan of any type of
prejudice.
Considering my friend who, while she was driving, talking on her cell, and writing something down managed to side swipe a SEMI, it's not completely off base.
I don't think it's sad...it was a different time that had a different mentality.
Women drivers, no survivors! If you don't like my driving, stay off the sidewalk!
And for the record, while I've seen many reckless male drivers, I've only seen women TEXT while driving (and use both hands to text, while staring at her phone, in an area swarming with
pedestrians).
