Good Idea or Bad Idea: Working With Family

Since we all spend more time with our co-workers than our loved ones, it makes sense that some of you have a desire to work with your significant other, but what about working with a family member? In Hollywood, parents oftentimes double as their children's managers, but oftentimes it can backfire, (remember what happened with Macaulay Culkin?) resulting in a tainted work and personal relationship. Having a momager seemed to work for Usher for a few years until news of a split hit the wire back in May, 2007. No one knows the details surrounding their breakup, but it couldn't have been all that bad because he's rehired her as his manager!

I know my parents would only have my best interests at heart but even so, I'm not so sure it would be a good idea to mix business with family. What about you? Would working with your family members be a good idea or a bad idea?

Rock-afire Explosion Wants to Make Love in This Club

Last week, I discovered this nightmare-inducing music vid of Showbiz Pizza's robotic house band, Rock-afire Explosion, singing "Smooth Criminal." The band recently made an Internet comeback, and their vids are now unavoidable. Check out their rendition of Usher's "Love in This Club." It's a little unsettling, but once you get over the fact that they're singing of a potential sexual conquest to children, it's pretty entertaining.

R. Kelley and Usher discover in the unintentionally hilarious video/song Same Girl that they're both dating TT, a woman who went to Georgia Tech, has a kid, and loves The Waffle House. Well, these chicks made an intentionally hilarious spoof. Give it up for "Same Dude." (Nice choice, ladies--he's a fox.)

Do You Act Younger or Older Than Your Age?

This Sunday Mad Men was filled with people not acting their age. The show opens with a clip of "Bye Bye Birdie" being sung by, according to one of Peggy's best lines, "a 25-year-old woman acting like a 14-year-old girl." Is this a harbinger of things to come? Of course. It's Mad Men! It's also 1963 and the Beatles are about to invade, ushering in an era of youth culture.

Until the early 20th century adolescence as a category didn't exist. Children dressed like adults, talked like adults, and wanted to be adults. There was no in-between. Interest in adolescence and youth culture really took off in the 1960s, a time when teens and young adults developed their own style. Their clothes, music, slang, and even ideals were drastically different than their parents', and they were identified as their own group.

Now the Internet has changed everything yet again. It's given us access to any subculture we want to join, so we can be in the know long after college comes to a close. Ask one 28-year-old about her favorite music and it may sound like she stopped tuning in five years ago; ask another and she'll tell you what came out last week.

Of course, age is defined differently for everyone. Do you act younger or older than your age?

Sarah Haskins: "Bloody Hell, I'm Old"

Sarah Haskins turned 30 recently - and she’s worried she’s “f*cked” because it seems that only ladies with short, blond hair represent products that usher one into old-ladyhood, complete with bladder issues and osteoporosis. She wants to still be able to walk with canoes, play with oranges, and feel 29 again. How to do this? Use products with dynamic first syllables. Works for me!

Plotless Porn Wins the Day

I’m not a big porn-watcher, but if I did watch porn, I wouldn’t watch it for the plot. (I’m kinda like a dude that way.)

Well, it turns out if I started watching porn now, I’d be in luck. The pendulum has swung back to plotless porn, in part due to competition from the Internet, where porn scenes are short, relatively plotless and dialogueless, and which cut to the action more quickly. “On the Internet, the average attention span is three to five minutes,” said Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment. “We have to cater to that.”

In the ‘70s, during the so-called golden age of porn, when actresses still had pubic hair and actors sported porn ‘staches, movies like Behind the Green Door were practically feature films - only with lots of sex. Then cheap, hand-held video cameras ushered in a generation of pornographers who bypassed plot so that the leading lady could quickly get down and dirty with the pool boy. Plot rolled back into porn the ‘90s with the popularity of DVDs. Big studios, said Paul Fishbein of AVN Media Network, wanted to appeal to women, hoping that couples would watch the films at home.

But we’re back again to plotless porn. What’s replaced plot? Themes, like New Sensations’ Girls ‘n Glasses, which stitches together scenes of women having sex in their glasses. Porn actress Savanna Samson laments the falling away of plot. “I used to have dialogue,” she said, and used to get excited about scripts. “Getting it on in one hardcore scene after another," she continues, "just isn’t as much fun."

So here’s a question - if you watch porn, do you prefer yours with a plot or plotless?

10 Reasons Barack Obama Is the First Cool President

Regardless of what they think about his policies, a lot of Americans agree that President Obama might be the nation's first hip president. While some think his style is elusive and hard to define, I've narrowed down 10 things that make Barack Obama cooler than other commanders in chief.

Here's my list:

He's addicted to tech: He refused to give up his BlackBerry becoming the first emailing president.
He's not self-conscious: While he's sort of a goofy dancer, Barack sure looked cool when he came out grooving on Ellen's show.
He inspires teen slang: At one Albany, NY high school teens respond to a sneeze with "Barack you." (Barack does mean blessed.)
He's not uptight: The White House work day starts at 9 a.m. and it's not necessary to wear a jacket in the oval office.
He's married to Michelle: Nothing makes you more cool than having an inspiring partner by your side.

You Asked: She Downgraded My Role in Her Wedding!

Dear Sugar,

I'm a gay male who's had a female best friend for 12 years. We've been through everything together: the good, the bad, we've seen each other through it all. This year my bestie got engaged and I'm so excited for her but the only thing is, for as long as I've known her, she has relayed to me that she wanted to get married on a beach and that I'd be standing next to her at the alter as "man of honor," if you will. Now she's decided to get married at a Catholic church, and I've been offered a role as an usher. I'm deeply offended that I've been given such a minimal role in her wedding, and that she didn't fight tradition to have me on her side in the wedding party.

My questions are: Am I justified in feeling hurt? Is there a delicate way to decline the usher position? And, is there something I can do in lieu of being an usher that would still honor our long-term friendship?

Dear Usher of (Dis)honor,

I am so sorry to hear that your role has been downgraded on her special day. Since she's strayed so far from her life-long dream, something tells me that her fiancé is pressuring her into what he's always envisioned his wedding to be. I don't know anything about your relationship with him, but even if it's strained, you absolutely have every right to be upset that you're no longer going to be standing up for your best friend. Having hurt feelings is a totally natural reaction and even though she might not change her mind, I suggest talking to her about her sudden change of heart as there could be something going on that you are unaware of.

Sure, being an usher isn't as glamourous as being her best man, but are you sure you really want to decline being in her wedding altogether? Perhaps you can ask if you can be an usher and read a poem, or make a speech at the reception. Ask her if you can play a more personal role in addition to the role she's already assigned to you. Her wedding day is a huge day for her, but it's his big day, too. She needs to honor his needs and perhaps compromise a little, which may result in you having to be flexible and understanding of what they want as a couple. The only way to get to the bottom of this is to be open with your friend. If you're as close as you say you are, she'll appreciate your honesty. I hope you can find a way to get through this and enjoy whatever part you play on her wedding day.

Kiss of Arrest: Women Say They Were Unfairly Targeted at Mall

After she received a kiss on the cheek from her girlfriend, a Texas woman says a mall security officer and a sheriff deputy began harassing her. Now, Jessica Garcia will argue to a court that the mall unfairly targeted her and her girlfriend when they arrested them on trespassing and other charges.

Garcia has recounted the situation like this:

He said, "This is a family mall, y'all can't do this.” We said, "Do what?" He said, "Y'all kissed, and if y'all do it again I'm going to write you a citation or I'm going to kick y'all out."

The officers eventually told them to leave, but when they reentered the mall to get to their car, the officers accused them of trespassing. After a confrontation, the couple was arrested.

This story reminds me of the one from last Summer. An usher at a Seattle Mariners baseball game asked a lesbian couple to stop kissing because it was making another fan uncomfortable. Despite the similarities, being asked to stop kissing, and being arrested for it, are very different things!
