The How-To Lounge: How to Tie your Husband's Tie

My favorite scene in Pretty Woman was when Julia Roberts was sitting on the sink and tied Richard Gere's tie before he left the hotel for a business meeting. The three most common kinds of tie knots are the Windsor knot, the 1/2 Windsor knot, and the 4 in Hand knot - the 1/2 Windsor being the most popular
The 1/2 Windsor knot can be used with any dress shirt and works best with a wider tie made from light to moderate fabric
If you are tying the tie for your boyfriend or husband, practice on yourself first, aka tie it on yourself first
To tie the 1/2 Windsor, stand in front of the mirror and make sure the wide part of the tie is about 12 inches below the skinny part of the tie. Simply cross the wide over the narrow and curl it around and behind the narrow part of the tie. Pull the wide end up and through the loop you just created. Bring the wide end back to the front and over the narrow end, from right to left. Take the wide end back through the loop (yes, again) from the underneath back through the knot in the front. Use both hands to tighten the knot, all the while making sure the wide part is much longer than the narrow part
The Windsor tie is more of a statement kind of knot that is said to project stature and confidence. This knot works best with spread collared shirts. While this knot is very similar to the 1/2 Windsor, some think it's even easier to tie
Again, stand in front of the mirror and make sure the wide part is 12 inches longer than the narrow part. Cross the wide over the narrow and bring the wide part through the loop between the collar and your neck, and back down. Pull the wide end underneath the narrow, to the right, and back through the loop to the right, so the wide section of the tie is essentially inside out. Bring the wide session across the front of your chest from right to left. Pull the wide end through the loop again and back down through the knot. Again, tighten until you're satisfied with the knot
The Four in Hand Knot is best used with a thicker tie and a standard button down dress shirt. This is considered the easiest kind of knot to tie
Yet again, stand in front of the mirror and make sure the wide part is 12 inches longer than the narrow part. Wrap the wide part of the tie over the narrow. Continue to bring the wide back over the front, like you are simply twisting it around a pole. Pull the wide part up through the loop around your neck. While loosely holding your finger in the front knot (to secure room for the other end of the tie), bring the wide portion of the tie though the knot, let your finger go and gently tighten the knot to meet the collar by holding onto the narrow portion of the tie

Remember that practice makes perfect and I am sure your boyfriend or husband would be happy to teach you some of his tricks if it means reenacting any scene from Pretty Woman with you!

I just received an e-mail asking if a light- colored suit would be acceptable for a man to wear at a black tie event, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to run through the basic rules of thumb.

Deciphering dress codes requires a little bit of knowledge, and certain occasions have strict rules that are best and most comfortable to follow. When the invitation specifies a form of dress, this is both a courtesy and a guide for the tenor of the event. If an invitation specifically calls for black tie, men are expected to wear a tuxedo.

Men don't get as many opportunities as women to express themselves through their formal attire. That said, a tuxedo is a lovely and classic look! If you feel the need to mix things up a bit, opt to wear a long tie instead of the classic bow tie. You can spice up the simple black and white look with a colored or patterned bow tie, vest or cummerbund. But please, fellas, pick only one piece for your bold or patterned accent! Depending on the event, sometimes a tux can we worn without a tie altogether, and that's a look I kinda dig.

Another safe way to show some style is through your cuff links. Cuff links make a nice, subtle personal statement; they're a safe way for men to accessorize and add some flair to the outfit. Most of all, fellas, don't forget to enjoy yourself!

Skip the Pill: Some Young Women Want to Be Sterilized

Kerry Balley, 24, is regular woman who knows she never wants to have kids. In today's Daily Mail, Kerry reveals that she plans to be sterilized before her upcoming wedding. She writes:

I can't bear the thought of being tied down, a dependable mother and stable. I admire women who do it, but I've come to terms with the fact that it's just not who I am and I would be completely hopeless at it, not to mention resentful. It's not really a decision I've made, I just know.

There is debate about whether women of a certain age, like Kerry, should be denied permanent sterilization. While some argue that healthcare providers should not help a younger woman do something irreversible that she might later regret, others, like the International Planed Parenthood Federation, say that each woman, regardless of age, should be able to decide whether or not she wants children.

Do You Think You Could Have a Last-Minute Wedding?

It's only the third season of Gossip Girl and we're seeing Lily wed for the second time - nevermind her countless marriages before the show! When the last-minute wedding fails to materialize, Lily and Rufus make another snap decision to get married that night in the Humphreys' Brooklyn loft with Sonic Youth as the wedding band (weird!).

I like the idea of a spontaneous wedding, especially when you've had an on-off relationship for 20 years, but I'm not sure I could actually go through with it. Do you think you could tie the knot on the spot without worrying about loose strings?

When making its list of the best cities for America's youth, the Wall Street Journal looked at factors like how easy it is find a job or a future mate.

Where today's young people decide to settle down once the "recovery" begins will have a big impact on American cities. Urban centers that become "youth magnets" should see a boom in cultural allure, along with an economic advantage.

Here are the top-five youth magnet cities, according to the WSJ:

1. Washington, DC (tie): The 2008 election of the "cool" Barack Obama set off a "youthful pilgrimage" that shouldn't end anytime soon.
1. Seattle (tie): Seattle's mix of culture, high-tech industry, natural beauty, and university presence makes it a youth magnet.
3. New York City: NYC is still a big city of dreams.
4. Portland: Despite a double digit unemployment rate, Portland's public transportation, access to outdoor activities, and artist culture attracts young people.
5. Austin: A university town with housing and job opportunities makes this city a great place for young people to settle down.

Palin Shows Guilt-By-Association Attacks Often Hypocritical

Sarah Palin has been painting Barack Obama as unpatriotic lately, bringing up Obama's acquaintance with William Ayers, a current college professor and former member of the Weather Underground, a radical organization that wanted to end the Vietnam War through acts of domestic terrorism when Obama was eight-years-old.

But the McCain/Palin ticket has dubious associations of its own. One example: Palin's connection to the separatist Alaskan Independence Party, founded by Joe Volgar who died buying explosives and said while alive: "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government." Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. wrote about the apparent hypocrisy yesterday:

If McCarthy-era guilt-by-association is once again a valid political consideration, Palin, it would seem, has more to lose than Obama. Palin, it could be argued, following her own logic, thinks so little of America's perfection that she continues to "pal around" with a man -her husband, actually - who only recently terminated his seven-year membership in the Alaskan Independence Party. Putting plunder above patriotism, the members of this treasonous cabal aim to break our country into pieces and walk away with Alaska's rich federal oil fields and one-fifth of America's land base - an area three-fourths the size of the Civil War Confederacy. AIP's charter commits the party "to the ultimate independence of Alaska," from the United States which it refers to as "the colonial bureaucracy in Washington." It proclaims Alaska's 1959 induction as a state "as illegal and in violation of the United Nations charter and international law."

Palin attended the AIP's 1993 convention, which called for a draft succession constitution. She also attended in 2000, gave the keynote in 2006, and greeted the convention via video this year.

Based on this information, RFK, Jr. continued his repudiation of the Ayers line of attack arguing: "So when Palin accuses Barack of 'not seeing the same America as you and me,' maybe she is referring to an America without Alaska. In any case, isn't it time the media start giving equal time to Palin's buddy list of anti-American bombers and other radical associates."

The boomerang effect of Palin's criticisms are reminiscent of McCain's attempt to tie Obama to the mortgage giants, while 26 of McCain's advisers or fundraisers, including his campaign chair, have financial ties. If voters want to know about Obama's strained ties to Ayers, will they care more about Palin's connection to Alaska radicals?

You Asked: Can I Ask Her to Cut Off All Ties With Him?

Dear Sugar,

My girlfriend and I broke up about three months ago. Two weeks after it happened, she confessed to sleeping with someone else. Though we weren't together, we still kept the lines of communication open and she constantly told me that she loved me and missed me - I returned the sentiment (which I sincerely felt). We are trying to work things out and slowly get back together, so is it unreasonable for me to ask her to break off all ties with the guy she slept with? I just don't think I can move forward knowing that she's still in contact with a man that she's been intimate with. - Cautious Kevin

Dear Cautious Kevin,

I don't blame you for feeling insecure about the man your ex slept with, so if he's going to be a bone of contention for you while you patch things up with her, I think you should most definitely talk to her about him. It sounds as though they are still in contact, so before jumping to conclusions about getting back together, make sure you're on the same page - in other words, be certain she's no longer having relations with him. If you're both on board with making your relationship work again, I don't think it's unreasonable for you to ask her to cut off ties with him, but at the end of the day, you're going to have to trust her in order to have a successful, happy relationship - whether they talk or not. I wish you luck!
