Would You Watch a New Muppet Show?

You know, I was already really excited about the news that Jason Segel was working on a new Muppet movie. But could he also be plotting a new version of The Muppet Show? According to a report from the UK, the answer is yes. Segel's movie script apparently "involves all the Muppets uniting to save their studio with one last variety show," and it leaves open the possibility of continuing in TV form - presumably if the movie does well.

Maybe it's just because I recently watched a few vintage Muppet Show episodes (with guests Peter Sellers and John Cleese!), but I think a modern-day Muppet Show could be fantastic - if it could recapture the spirit of the original. (That's where I think the 1996 ABC/Disney update, Muppets Tonight, fell short.) What do you think?

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. Pickings were a bit slim, I have to say. But hey, it's nice outside. We should all get some fresh air anyway this week, right?

National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Just as the big action-adventure blockbusters roll into theaters this summer, here's a blast from the past (er, a blast from last December). National Treasure: Book of Secrets is available for home viewing, just in case you want more of that genre right now. This is the second in the successful Disney franchise about a group of adventure seekers looking for treasure via American history. In this installment, Nicholas Cage stars as Benjamin Franklin Gates and goes on the hunt with his pals for the truth behind the assassination of President Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth.

It's a wee bit hokey and a lot goofy, but at the end of the day, a lot of moviegoers really like these flicks. Plus, it is nothing if not a family-friendly PG-rated action-adventure that kids will get a kick out of. Special features include cast bloopers and outtakes and featurettes titled "The Book of Secrets: On Location," and "Street Stunts: Creating the London Chase." One featurette struck me as particularly funny: "Inside the Library of Congress" (woo-hoo!).

The Muppet Show: Season Three
It's hard to believe some of my favorite shows of the past are still not completely available on DVD (hello, people in charge of Ally McBeal: come on already!) and The Muppet Show is no exception. The show was on the air from 1976-1981 and and now Season Three is yours to love and adore at home. Season Three took place from 1978-1979 and included guest stars ranging from Gilda Radner, Raquel Welch, Sylvester Stallone, Big Bird, and Alice Cooper. I'm still amazed at the diverse group of celebrities the creators of the show were able to convince to hang out with a bunch of Jim Henson puppets.

It's a great show to introduce to a new generation of kids and so much fun for those of us raised on it to take a trip down memory lane. Special features include featurettes title, "Muppets On Puppets" and "A Company of Players" as well as some muppets commercials.

The Muppets Are So Seinfeld

It's been lingering in the back of my mind for a long time now. Could we just replace each of the Seinfeld characters with muppets? I know. I know. You're thinking the show would lose its mundane charm if we turn Jerry, Elaine, and George into puppets. (Kramer is another story.) The muppets are all novelty; they couldn't pull off "nothingness" if they tried. Well, not so fast! Here's a little something of nothing . . .

This only affirms my suspicion that Beaker was the unsung badass on The Muppet Show. Those looks, that voice, and a jokester to boot! Beaker is everything I want in a man - puppet and all - w00t! w00t! (I kid, I kid.) A gag can't officially wear out its welcome until the non-blinking, neurotic muppet sings, so here's my guy, ready to rick 'n roll . . .

You may know "Feelings" to be a slow, sappy, painful song, but it's something else on The Muppet Show. Our bug-eyed buddy, Beaker, tweaked the lyrics and added some of his personal flair to the song. In doing so, he made it ten times more tolerable and gave the ballad a bit more substance. Prepare to be wowed.

Doug Henning may look goofy to us jaded folk today (yes, he's wearing pink satin overalls, has buck teeth and a weird 70's porno 'stache) but this is a sweet clip of him performing his seashells trick on "The Muppet Show." I'm told that's the stage manager he's with, but I'm not sure. (David Blaine, eat your heart out!)

The Bachelorette Is Short on Entertaining Drama

I never thought I'd say this, but I kind of miss Jake and Vienna. The Bachelor vets brought lots of crazy to the franchise and gave viewers a reason to tune in. The only contestant from this season of The Bachelorette who could possibly make the cut for Bachelor Pad, the offshoot that is more blatant about capitalizing on unstable cast members, would be Kalon. He's this season's villain, who made his grand entrance in a helicopter. The other guys take offense to Kalon's supposedly sophisticated vocabulary and choice of luggage. Could it get more tame than that?

Between baking cookies and Muppets, Kalon, aka Chopper, did sour the saccharine season momentarily last night in episode two, picking a fight with single dad Doug while lounging in the pool with his stunna-shades on. Kalon accused Doug of taking time off from being a dad to compete on the show and said, "I always imagined that my first child would be my actual child." Uh oh. I see tears in the future when Emily gets wind of that. Watch the clip of the pool fight now, and tell me if you think viewers would rather be entertained by the reality TV dating show than see the contestants "find love."

Bachelorette Breakdown: The Week's Biggest Whoa!-ments

Week two on The Bachelorette brought plenty of action, and I'm not just talking about the chemistry between Emily and Kermit - though that was slightly uncomfortable. No, I'm referring to the first one-on-one dates, the first group date, and all the poolside drama. It looks like we've got a veritable Real Housewives of Charlotte on our hands, only in this case the housewives are men and Botox is replaced by Muscle Milk.

When Emily told Ryan they'd be baking cookies for her daughter's soccer team on the show's first one-on-one date, I was like, Whoa. No doubt this guy thought the only food preparation he'd have to do on The Bachelorette would be stomping his own grapes when producers flew him and his date to the scenic Napa Valley, and even then it would all just be for show and they'd get to drink perfectly aged Merlot by the fire while staring into each other's eyes. Not this season, buddy!
When Ricki showed up in the audience of the group date, I was like, Whoa! Wasn't the whole purpose of bringing the show to Charlotte so that Emily could still maintain some semblance of normalcy in her daughter's life? First she brings Ryan to soccer practice (but makes him wait in the car mere yards away from her daughter) and now this? (Side note: I kept thinking they should have rolled up the tinted window, lest Ricki see the strange man in her mother's car, but then it occurred to me that he might suffocate in the South Carolina heat.) Actually, come to think of it, watching your mom be the ringleader in a variety show starring the Muppets and a dozen suitors (one of which will be your new daddy!) is pretty commonplace nowadays.
Whilst lounging in the hot tub, Kalon let slip that he thought Doug "put being a dad on hold" to be on the show, and Doug was all, Whoa. Despite the fact that Kalon is coming off like a tool and clearly making no friends, Doug overreacted a touch and told him to "check it," but in a much more serious way. Kalon tried to interject, and again Doug was like, "Check it." I believe the phrase he's looking for is actually "Check yourself before you wreck yourself, bro." It also appears that Kalon is no longer "Helicopter Guy" and has now been given the nickname "Chopper," which the guys think is derogatory, but which is actually really cool and something I might try to get my friends to call me.
Meanwhile, Emily went on her date with Joe. The two dined at her local cotillion venue and put their hopes and dreams in the "love clock." After laying out his wishes to come back to Charlotte to marry her, Emily told Joe he wasn't the guy for her, and Joe was like, Whoa. It was brutal, but it was necessary.
After the loads of private time he got with her this week, Ryan still thought it would be kosher to monopolize Emily's time before the final elimination. He did this by writing her a seven-page letter and then making her read it to him out loud. It took 15 minutes, which is about two weeks in Bachelorette hours. This wouldn't be quite so bad if Taylor wasn't awkwardly waiting in the wings, caught in the unfortunate position of either backing down or breaking mid-letter-read. All the guys who were watching from outside were like, Whoa.
