Also, it is imperative to send in written complaints (always make a copy for yourself too for your records). In the legal world, if things aren’t in writing, it’s as though they never happened. </p> <p>Next, take out a thermometer and record the temperature of your apartment on an index card. Take a dated photograph of the thermometer (make sure the temperature is legible) and the index card and send your landlord the pictures as well. </p> <p>If the temperature in your apartment is higher than 60 degrees in the summer, a fine can be issued to the owner of the property. And I guarantee, once your landlord gets a fine, they are bound to get on the ball…money talks.</p> <p>If you still don’t get a quick response, have your attorney file an HP action in landlord/tenant court (yes – believe it or not, there is such a thing). She's obviously taking advantage of you, and you're right, she needs to move out before you end up losing anymore money or permanently damaging your relationship. If she really won't budge on her own accord, go back and check out your lease agreement. If it only has your name on it, then paying the rent is 100 percent your responsibility and you'll have to force her to leave. It's harder when you're dealing with family, but if I were you I would let her know that you will get higher authority involved if necessary. </p> <p>If you both signed separate lease agreements for each share of rent, then the circumstances are different. In that case, she's solely responsible for her half. If she doesn't pay her rent, your landlord will have to deal with the situation. Of course, <i>you</i> can always move out. I know that's not the answer you want to hear, but in the end, knowing you don't have to deal with her may make the stress of looking for a new place worth it. Meanwhile, as she sat at home looking for a job all day, she did nothing to clean the apartment. I would come home from work, do the dishes, clean up the place, make dinner, and then go to bed. Rinse, repeat.</p> <p>She finally got a job, and then lost it three weeks later. This was not her fault, but regardless, it has been three weeks since she lost her job and she still does not have another. While I understand helping your roommate once, there's absolutely no reason why you should be carrying the weight yet again, so it's time to put your foot down and be firm with her. Everyone knows it's a difficult time to find a job, but she's a grown adult who should have planned for this, or at least gotten a part-time job in the meantime so she can pay her share of the bills. </p> <p>This woman has not been taking your feelings into consideration, and while I don't feel that two wrongs make a right, I think you should concentrate on yourself right now. Your home needs to be a place where you're comfortable, and your roommate has to be someone you trust and who respects your living space; she clearly doesn't fit that model. </p> <p>If I were you, I'd just be honest with her. Tell her that it's simply not working out and you no longer want to live together. If she puts up a stink, be aware that you might be the one that has to move since both your names are on the lease. Regardless of who gets the actual apartment, it's very clear that you two are not meant to be roommates.
