Do You Play Games When Texting or Calling Back?

There are so many silly dating games that people play in order not to look too eager or worse, desperate. I knew a married woman who carried her playing hard to get into her marriage! I was shocked when she told me that she never, ever called her husband; she waited for him to call her and took her sweet time getting back to him. (Wow.)

Most of us observe less extreme rules when dating. Your first date may call (or text) you the day after your date (maybe two days) and you may call him or her back in a few hours or even one day later, rather than right away. God forbid actually answering the phone, or texting right back!

I'm only kinda kidding. Do you play games when texting or calling back a date?

Is Cell-Phone Snooping Ever OK?

Is going through someone's text messages OK if you suspect he's up to no good? That was the question on The Hills this week: Heidi goes through Spencer's text messages, finds a text from a bartender he'd been flirting with, and promptly deletes it. In therapy, all Spencer can talk about is how Heidi shouldn't have gone through his phone. I hate to agree with Spencer, but I'd be annoyed too.

Would you ever snoop in your significant other's cell phone if you suspected he or she was cheating? Or do you think snooping is a bad idea under any circumstance?

Texting Democracy: Estonia to Vote by Mobile Phone in 2011

American Idol may let you text in your vote, but Estonia will be the first actual country to implement voting by cell phone. Technologically-savvy citizens will place chips into their cell phones, that authenticate identifications, before they cast their ballots for the 2011 parliamentary election.

Estonia has already used online voting, without any major security breaches. In order to prevent coercion that might happen when people vote in private, Estonians can still cancel out their e-votes with a paper ballot. An independent study found that the new vote-by-phone procedure should go off without any manipulation or malfunctions.

Would you like to see more access to democracy from voting options like Internet or phone voting? I guess we'll be looking to E-stonia to see how it's done!

OMG! Text Messages Can Save the World

Pope Benedict XVI plans to send out spiritual text messages to thousands of young Catholics during World Youth Day this summer. 200,000 young people are expected to attend the six day event in Sydney, Australia. The entire WYD08 is going Web 2.0 by broadcasting religious teachings on the web and setting up a social networking site.

Do you think The Pope Mobile-phone has predictive text? Is this a sign the Church is ready to modernize its message, not just the messenger?

Meanwhile in India, texts are bringing economic salvation to farmers who live in poverty and experience high suicide rates. The text service, which costs $1 per month, helps the farmers make a better profit on their crops.

In the morning, farmers get the weather delivered right to their mobile phone. At lunch time, the going rates at the market show up in their inbox. These text messages allow farmers to save money on water if it's going to rain, as well as the time it would take them to go to the markets themselves.

The India text program shows the potential of information to bring people out of poverty. Can you think of any other creative ways to use the power of the text? What do you think a Pope text would say? I C U! Dont 4get 2 pray!

Trend Watch: Walking, Texting, and Running into Sh*t

The following story was yesterday's headline of the day, but this live-action news coverage is too good to pass up. Injuries caused by walking while texting are on the rise and a London charity has decided to do something about it. That is, they're padding lamp posts located along the "most dangerous" texting streets. The story is absurd, but the highly informative footage of peeps "accidentally" walking into street fixtures and poles really amps the entertainment value here. Hard-hitting news, eh?

Padded Lampposts Tested in London to Prevent Cell Phone Texting Injuries

When texting first hit the scene, it was a convenient, quick way to convey a message without killing costly cell phone minutes. But convenience gave way to annoyance with the rise of text message break-ups, textual harassment, and - OMG! - texting while driving. One would think that texting while walking would be the better way to move and message at once, but not so fast. Those damn lampposts keep getting in the way! Last year, 68,000 distracted peeps were injured from walking into stationary objects in the streets of London- so they're now gonna add padding to lampposts. Can you hear me now? Cuz I'm ROTFL! Tech Dating 101: Canceling Plans Via Text

Like I said last week in regards to making announcements over the Internet, I prefer face to face or voice to voice contact over text messaging or e-mail, but if you're looking for the easy way out, sending a text is definitely the way to go!

Since there are no rules set in stone, take each scenario into consideration. If you're canceling on a good friend, especially last minute, I'm sure she/he would appreciate hearing your voice and your reason for canceling, but if you're bagging out on someone who is easy going, not too sensitive or on someone you don't plan on seeing again (a bad date for instance), I think sending a text is perfectly fine. With that said, it definitely gives off the impression that you don't care enough to pick up the phone and tell him/her in person so take that into consideration.

I know that some people's main mode of communication is text or instant messaging, so if you don't think the other person would be offended by it, by all means keep your mode of communication status quo, but ask yourself how you'd feel if that person texted you instead of calling and use your answer as your gage.

You Asked: He Texts but Won't Ask Me Out

Dear Sugar,

There is a guy that I've been talking to for five months now. We text message every day and he usually initiates the conversations, but he hasn't asked me out yet. He was in a messy two-year relationship so I understand that he might not be ready to start something with me, but his flirtatious messages leave me confused and I'm starting to lose my patience here. Does it seem like this guy is interested but not ready? Does he just see me as a friend? Or is he like me, waiting to be asked out? I analyze this situation in my head over and over again but can't seem to come up with the answers. Do you have any advice? - Aggravated Angie

Dear Aggravated Angie,

Talking via text message for five months without going out on a date makes me think one of three things. Either A) he has a girlfriend, B) he isn't interested in taking the relationship to the next level, or C) he's just not ready to be in a relationship again. It sounds like you're waiting for him to make the move, but instead of wasting any more time I'd just come right out and ask what his intentions are. I understand that we live in a very technological word, but as Greg Behrendt said, "If you're comfortable having an entire relationship on text, that's up to you, but you basically teach people how to treat you."

It seems that most of you rely on text messaging when it comes to communicating with your love interest, but according to Greg Behrendt, author of He's Just Not That Into You, we can call the shots on how to communicate with our crushes. How do you feel about the role technology plays in dating these days?

I think that in your life you have standards for what you will or will not tolerate, what works for you. If you're comfortable having an entire relationship on text, that's up to you, but you basically teach people how to treat you. If you want a phone call, ask for a phone call and accept nothing less. You want to see somebody in person? Let them know. The great thing is, it's expanded the way we communicate. You know, sometimes when I'm doing something like this, I can check in and shoot my wife an email or a text and say "Hey, I love you, just letting you know. Busy, can't really call right now." But if I did that all the time, it would be problematic.
