Why, oh, why do they inflict science fairs on already awkward teens? It's not like some pimply 14-year-old is going to locate the gene that will let us all live to be 150 or suddenly discover alternative fuel sources. (Okay, maybe - but not likely.) Before YouTube, I guess young girls just wrote in their diaries. Now? They record their most awesomest and important thoughts on webcam for all the world to see. This song teases their self-importance ("She was all, he was like, OMG, totally!") but I see it a little differently. So this guitar prodigy, Sungha Jung, locked himself in his room for 60 hours after a fight with his mother and learned Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." He didn't just learn it. He puts an interesting, haunting spin on it. I get in a fight with my mother? I just eat a whole bag of potato chips and drink too much scotch. I guess that's what separates mere mortals like myself from 11-year-old guitar prodigies.
