Health Headlines: Sex, Marriage and Tears

There are some health headlines that are worth sharing. Often the stories behind the headlines live up to their tag lines. Check out these three stories, on marriage and gender differences, all caught my eye and I had to share.

Sex lessons for 'cranky' miners – The BBC
To increase productivity, miners are given "tool box talks" on how to spice up their sex lives with their menopausal wives. Company bosses say giving their predominantly male employees lessons on menopause and foreplay gives them a healthy sex life, which in turn makes them happy, productive workers. Maybe folks will start saying, "Let's play miner."

Relationships often lead to weight gain – living together (or "living in sin" as granny likes to say) and marriage both seem to cause weight gain. If the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, this can't really come as much of a surprise, right?

Ellen's tearful plea sparked a controversy on crying in public. Seems that as a culture we think it is OK for men to cry but not women. The crying men are perceived as sensitive while crying women are seen as out of control. Now that makes me want to cry.

Whether we are touched by a TV show, feeling overjoyed at a wedding, overwhelmed with work, or on a PMS rollercoaster ride, we're bound to shed a few tears here and there. 5 Things About Crying

Crying is an emotional release and if you feel the need to cry you should let it out. Here are a few facts about the act of crying. I thought they were interesting, so of course I wanted to share.

Emotional tears have a different chemical composition than tears caused by irritants, such as onions.
Crying in public was considered normal until the Industrial Revolution, when diligent unemotional workers were needed to operate machinery.
Men’s tear ducts are smaller than women’s tear ducts.
One major stress hormone released from the body via tears, prolactin, is found in much higher concentration in women's bodies than in men's. (This makes sense when you consider that the hormone is also implicated in the synthesis of breast milk).
In Japan, crying for emotional release is all the rage, or so reports the Independent. The Japanese call it the "crying boom" - everyone wants a bit of sadness in their lives. Instead of going to a karaoke bar after work to wind down, businesspeople watch weepy films (called "tear films") at these crying clubs. There is also a huge demand for sad TV dramas and books, each graded by its ability to induce tears.

Here's one thing to add to your grocery list: disease-fighting foods. A growing body of research shows that you can squash certain symptoms with what you eat. In fact, eating the right foods may be just what the doctor ordered for these ailments:

Dry Eye 
If you suffer from dry eye (you know, that annoying gritty feeling when you blink), then relief may be found in a simple cup of joe, according to researchers from the University of Tokyo's School of Medicine. Study participants were given either a caffeine supplement or a placebo, and they then had their eyes tested 45 minutes later. The results? Not a dry eye in the house for those who'd had caffeine: they produced more tears than their noncaffeinated counterparts. This could be especially good news for women, as dry eye tends to affect postmenopausal women more than any other group.

Between the glittery pictures and the trailer for The Great Gatsby, moviegoers are already looking forward to Baz Luhrmann's film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous novel. However, it was a big week for TV, too, and with finales popping off like champagne corks at one of Gatsby's soirees, everyone had something to say about the dramatic season enders of Glee and Revenge.

Wes Anderson's Guide to Love

As a self-proclaimed Wes Anderson junkie, I was ecstatic to see his latest film Moonrise Kingdom this week. And considering I was either smiling or tearing up (or both) the entire 94 minutes, I'd say it was a hit. The camp-themed coming-of-age film has all the recognizable Wes Anderson-isms fans of the director love, and the young star-crossed lovers at the center of the sweet story really just melt your heart. Set in the '60s on a New England island, the film follows Suzy and Sam, troubled preteens who write love letters to each other before deciding to run away together. Wes Anderson's films always incorporate a romantic coupling, exes, or love triangle in them, and the characters involved are usually full of witty advice and observations on relationships. So see some of my favorite couples and ex-couples from Wes Anderson movies along with their lines on love's redeeming, disappointing, and confusing qualities.

The Bachelorette Is Short on Entertaining Drama

I never thought I'd say this, but I kind of miss Jake and Vienna. The Bachelor vets brought lots of crazy to the franchise and gave viewers a reason to tune in. The only contestant from this season of The Bachelorette who could possibly make the cut for Bachelor Pad, the offshoot that is more blatant about capitalizing on unstable cast members, would be Kalon. He's this season's villain, who made his grand entrance in a helicopter. The other guys take offense to Kalon's supposedly sophisticated vocabulary and choice of luggage. Could it get more tame than that?

Between baking cookies and Muppets, Kalon, aka Chopper, did sour the saccharine season momentarily last night in episode two, picking a fight with single dad Doug while lounging in the pool with his stunna-shades on. Kalon accused Doug of taking time off from being a dad to compete on the show and said, "I always imagined that my first child would be my actual child." Uh oh. I see tears in the future when Emily gets wind of that. Watch the clip of the pool fight now, and tell me if you think viewers would rather be entertained by the reality TV dating show than see the contestants "find love."

Miranda Kerr Talks Angelina Jolie and Audrey Hepburn With InStyle Australia

Miranda Kerr is red hot in a sexy minidress on the June cover of InStyle Australia. The supermodel struck a pose for photographer Chris Colls and spoke with the magazine about her personal style. When it comes to daily looks, Miranda told the magazine she prefers bring "relaxed and understated." However, when it comes to ladylike ensembles, she channels Audrey Hepburn, and for red-carpet inspiration, turns to Angelina Jolie.

Miranda stepped out solo on Monday night in Sydney for InStyle's Women of Style Awards. She was recognized for her beauty brand, Kora Organics, and took the stage in a Carla Zampatti to accept the Women of Style Readers Choice Award. Miranda teared up accepting the honor, saying, "It's really wonderful to be in this room full of all of you incredibly inspiring women. I'm all about empowering women and I'm doing my best to do that and thank you all for doing your best to do the same."
