I hate doing chores - what a way to ruin a good weekend or evening! I always get them done, but I do find myself moping through them most of the time. I can certainly see why it’s so appealing to share the burden with someone else or at least have company while you’re stuck doing it. Having a partner to help handle life’s daily chores and weekly errands is definitely a perk of being in a relationship. And when you live together, it especially comes in handy. What chores do you do as a team? Or do you each do your own thing?

Couples Who Clean Together, Sleep Together

I recently went to my friend's bachelorette party and got her the book Porn For Women as a gag gift. The PG porn book suggests that women get turned on by men doing things like vacuuming, folding clothes, or making dinner.

But according to a new study, seeing your spouse do household chores might actually be an aphrodisiac - and not just for women. The study revealed that the more housework a husband or wife does, the more likely they are to have sex with their spouses.

Many of the participating couples reasoned that showing an interest in household work - defined as cleaning, preparing meals, washing dishes, washing and ironing clothes, driving family members around, shopping, yard work, maintaining cars, and paying bills - demonstrates a greater willingness to invest in shared interests. It's a symbol of teamwork and commitment. One husband told researchers that sharing chores reflects a "willingness to hold my wife's needs and wants on par with my own." He sounds like a keeper.

Even a small project like decorating a tree comes with challenges (making sure the tree doesn’t lean, that all the lights are working, etc.) and believe it or not, taking on a task and working through all the quirks together can often spark a little romance. Should the Military Program JROTC Be in High Schools?

As JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps) enters its last (and ninetieth) year in San Francisco, a non-binding measure intended to show support for the program has qualified for the November ballot. Mayor Gavin Newsom backs the efforts to save the high school program. In 2006 the SF school board decided to stop JROTC, even though there were no complaints, mostly because they disagreed with the military's policy on gay and lesbian soldiers.

The stated purpose of JROTC is "to instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment." Many students across the country take the course as their physical education (PE) credit.

Arguable benefits of the program include self-discipline, teamwork, and confidence in young people who might need a boost. Critics, worried that JROTC could limit career opportunities, don't want underprivileged youth put on track for the military. But a very low number of JROTC students go into the military.

Since the program is voluntary and successful, I hope the school board reconsiders and allows parents and students to decide whether to participate. Also - JROTC gives young people who might never consider joining the military a chance to experience the benefits of civic duty at no risk. By taking away this choice, the "progressive" members of the school board betray their principles of openness.

The How-To Lounge: Emergency Situations

It's scary to think about, but emergency situations do present themselves in our lives from time to time. And knowing how to handle them calmly and efficiently is extremely important and can even mean the difference between life and death. Though no one can guarantee how they’ll respond to a situation until they find themselves there, I’ve come up with a few tips should something arise. To see them just read more.

Don’t panic. (I know, I know; it’s an obvious suggestion that’s a lot easier said than done.) The sensation of panic is one of a physical nature - heart racing, sweaty palms, rapid breathing - but instead of focusing on your body like you might naturally be inclined to do, draw all your attention to the scene around you. Think first, and react later.
Once you’ve pulled yourself together, start listing off what needs to be done in order of urgency. Does someone need medical attention? If so, is it necessary to call 911 or can you just drive them to the hospital? Making a quick assessment will keep the chaos to a minimum and again, help you to avoid panicking.
Use teamwork. It’s likely that the people around you have experience you don’t, so pull all that knowledge together to come up with a solution.
On that note, don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. The support of another person can really make a difference.
Make every effort to act as quickly as possible. While taking a few minutes to come up with a solution or plan is important, dilly-dallying over a serious decision is not an option. You’ll never have a right answer, so just make a choice and stick with it.
Remove the people who aren’t handling things well, even if that requires physically sending them away. They’ll only make the situation that much worse.

If you can manage to keep your cool, you might be surprised at how quickly a situation can change from emergency to managed.

Office Team Building Exercise Is Kind of a Big Deal

Most workplaces emphasize the value of teamwork. Some even force their employees to partake in mandatory team building exercises, which usually amount to a giant waste of everyone's time. But not in this instance. These ladies proved that they could work as a team and make the most productive use of their time, too. Let's just say they have a leg up on the competition . . .

Mighty Mississippi River Bursts Its Banks Forcing Rescues

Despite backbreaking teamwork to sandbag the riverbanks, the Mississippi River broke through an Illinois levee forcing nearly half a dozen people to be rescued by helicopter. However, because the federal government learned from a 1993 flood in the same area and planned for a repeat, the damage could have actually been much worse.

After the 1993 Mississippi flood, President Clinton purchased much of the low-lying land buying out more than 9,000 homeowners. The land was turned into parks and underdeveloped areas creating much less of a risk when the next flood - like this one - occurred.
The buyout plan moved whole communities including Rhineland, MO and Valmeyer, IL. FEMA also spent $1.6 million to move the resident of Elkport (whose population then numbered 80) and razed the remaining buildings. The ones who remained are paying the price today as their town is now completely inundated with water.

The National Weather Service predicts crests in the next few days along the Mississippi River near St. Louis to approach those 1993 levels. In Canton, MO, the river might reach 27.7 feet high, more than 13 feet above the flood stage.

Though 1993 preparations controlled some damage, area residents are still hurting. Reports of raw sewage and farm runoff in floodwaters raise concerns about public health, and some long-time river dwellers are calling it quits. One woman who's 83, said, "I'm not going back after this one." It was the third time she'd been flooded out of her home since 1965.

Given the sheer number of recent weather-related disasters, is emergency response after the fact enough? Do we need more planning like the 1993 buyout to minimize disaster's affect?

The Paper is one of the new shows in MTV's teenybopper reality show lineup. I initially thought the program would serve as an enticing way to get young peeps enthused about a nonathletic, extracurricular activity - one that promotes civic awareness, community involvement, and writing proficiency. I should have known better. The show mainly focuses on the quirkiness of the paper's editor in chief and how nearly everyone under her can't stand her, constantly undermine her, and want to overthrow her. The value of teamwork? Oh, that's been edited out, natch.
