If men listened to television ads, they'd think that smaller was better (BK Burger Bites), that women love the smell of rancid cologne (Axe), and that you can cover up the fact that you haven't bathed or washed your sheets in ages (Febreze). Not only that, but they'd think that really hot chicks don't just put up with that stuff - they looove it! (And we wonder why men and women have trouble knowing what the other half wants.)

It may be true that a lot of women have found help from relationship books, but when you pile up all the how-to-fall-in-love books out there, it's easy to feel like publishers are trying to make you panic your way into marriage. I love Sarah Haskins. She's reminding all of us crazy ladies who are in love with Edward Cullen/Rob Pattinson from Twilight that the dude is basically the classic bad boy, only, he's got fangs. "What if I'm not the hero," Edward asks Bella, "What if I'm the bad guy?" "Then I will totally sleep with you!" Sarah responds. So true, so true. (Make sure you watch until the end when one of Sarah's writers does a dramatic reading. Freaking hilarious, and he kinda looks like Pattinson, too!)

I never noticed until Sarah Haskins (my new comedic hero) points it out here, but, ads for birth control pills never talk about their main selling point: you can have sex without getting pregnant! It's always about controlling or eliminating your period. She snarks, "Well, now we don't have to leave the tribe and go sit in that hut for a week. That was a bummer!" And as for the "small comfortable once monthly vaginal ring"? Umm, I'll pass.

I love Sarah Haskins. I mean, I really love Sarah Haskins. She is my hero of the hour. Why? Because she skewers the ridiculous advertisements, movies, and TV shows that are aimed at women but too often seem like they’re aimed at imbeciles. And she does it all in the most hilarious, sarcastic way imaginable.

Current TV is home to Haskins's video series, Target: Women, in which Haskins takes a few minutes to dissect some of the media’s most baffling, off-base, or downright insulting female-focused content. Her points are totally on-, well, target, and they’re presented with plenty of irony and cynicism. Having seen one too many Yaz commercials that make my skin crawl, for example, it’s refreshing to finally hear a voice pipe up to call out the absurdity of stuff that's pandering to women. The format is not unlike that of The Soup, but a little more upbeat and with a more specific focus.

After the jump you can see some of my favorite videos, like the one about yogurt ("It’s the official food of women!") and the one about wedding shows (in which a thin woman is called a “chubster” in her wedding dress, among other things). Seriously, why doesn’t this woman have her own segment on The Daily Show already? Maybe we should start a petition . . .

An Everyday Athlete Is Still an Athlete

On June 23, 1972, Title IX was signed into law, leveling the playing field for female athletes. To mark the 40th anniversary, espnW explore the impact of this landmark legislation.

You might not know me, but chances are you know someone like me. I'm that girl who grew up playing hoops in the driveway with my dad and brother every night after dinner. The one who played rec soccer for 10 years, starting out on a boys team. The one who persuaded her middle-school gym teacher to let her run the monthly timed mile against boys, then wrote her target time on her arm - in permanent marker. The one who took field day just a little too seriously.

The one who is thankful every day for Title IX.

Counting down the best of the past 40 years

Growing up, I wasn't an elite athlete, but I had passion to spare. I ran, jumped, threw, and kicked on a daily basis and eventually I found my calling in high school track and cross country. I was good (I earned seven varsity letters), but not good enough for the next level.

So when I arrived at Duke nearly four years ago, I found myself wondering something that had never crossed my mind before: was I still an athlete?

Answering that question was no easy task. As I read about various elite athletes, I recognized our shared pasts. Like gymnast Jordyn Wieber, I used to pull old cushions into the middle of the family room and do cartwheels, somersaults, and front handsprings. Like many WNBA stars, I was the only girl in neighborhood basketball games. I lacked their natural ability, but I came to realize that we are connected through dreams and experiences. We all began by thinking of ourselves as athletes and scheduling our lives around sports at a young age. That doesn't just go away.
