Demetri Martin is one of my favorite funny guys. His surreal sense of humor (plus his "I am one of the missing Beatles" look) is totally endearing. He's even described as a geeky dreamboat by people who keep tabs on that sort of thing. (The guy attended Yale and NYU School of Law on a full scholarship!)

Now, add actor to his list of accomplishments. He's starring in Ang Lee's film Taking Woodstock, which opens today. I can't wait to see it! But what about his other charms?

Alabama Makes Unfit Workers Pick Up Tab For Insurance

Giving up buttered grits for health care? As Alabama ballooned to take the #2 spot (right behind #1 ranked Mississippi) in the national obesity rankings, the state is cracking down on free health care payouts for state workers who are overweight. It's issued a get-slim-or-pay-up ultimatum for the nearly 40,000 workers on the state's insurance plan. They'll have a year to lose weight or start paying $25 a month toward their usually free plan.

Alabama already charges smokers - an incentive that has spurred some to snub out the butts - and other states reward workers for healthy habits. Ohio, for instance, pays workers $50 for getting health screenings and $50 for following the advice.

One size-acceptance advocate says the new Alabama insurance policy will cause stress for workers. She says, "I'm big and beautiful and doing my best to keep my stress levels down so I can stay healthy. That's big, not lazy, not a glutton and certainly not deserving of the pompous, poisonous disrespect served up daily to those of us with more bounce to the ounce." The Alabama program will go by the body mass index chart - anyone with a BMI over 35 will be charged. Research shows that this demographic costs an average of $1,700 extra dollars in health care per year, far more than the $300 an overweight worker will be charged.

Is this plan fair? Is it a good plan to motivate healthy changes, or does it tip the scales in the wrong direction?

Splitting the Tab

I'll admit that it drives me nuts when I'm out to dinner with a group of friends and as soon as the check comes, one person has to whip out her calculator to make sure she's not overcharged for the extra chips that the rest of us snacked on. I would never expect someone to pay an amount equal to everyone else if she only ordered a drink or a cup of soup, but if you ordered a salad that was two dollars less than the entrees everyone else enjoyed, I don't understand why the check can't just be split equally.

Is it so bad to over pay by a few dollars with friends? I figure that most of the time when you go out to dinner, you're paying to have some good laughs with good friends, not just a good meal. Maybe this is just one of my pet peeves, but do you ever encounter this?

Love It or Leave It? Newspaper Wedding Announcements

In one episode of Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw calls the New York Times wedding section the "single woman's sports pages." She and her brunch gang clearly have a love/hate relationship with the write-ups, alternately getting excited and depressed by them.

Chances are, your hometown paper has a wedding section, where you can keep tabs (or not) on all your old classmates getting hitched, or maybe you just read them for sport. What's your opinion on newspaper wedding announcements?

On Fire: Australia Battles Deadliest Natural Disaster in History

Victoria, Australia is welcoming cooler weather, as authorities say it will take several more days to contain blazes that have killed over 100 people.

On site last weekend, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd proclaimed: "Hell and all its fury has visited the good people of Victoria in the past 24 hours." These residents can thank a record breaking heatwave and perhaps arsonists for the hellish experience.

Australia's federal government will be there to help pick up the pieces, and the tab, for those who suffered damage, thanks to a $10 million disaster relief fund. Each adult will get $1,000 and an extra $400 for each child. Victims can apply for other grants, such as a re-establishment grant, totaling $26,000.
