Sue Likes Surprise Parties

Sue likes surprise parties. She really likes them. She likes them almost as much as she likes gaudy pink pearls and quilt crazy sweaters - and that's saying a lot. Lucky for Sue, there's a party in the works. It's gonna have balloons, a cake, even a few people here and there. Sue's so excited, she can't contain herself. She really can't contain herself . . .

My friend (let’s call her Laura) recently introduced me to a good male friend of hers (let’s call him Mark) at a Halloween party. Mark and I had a good time talking to each other and he emailed my friend a day later to tell her that he thought I was really nice. He then found me on Facebook and asked me out for the following weekend, to which I said yes.

We texted a few times and flirted a little bit. However, when the weekend came he got sick (I was sick too so I didn’t mind that we weren’t going to meet, although I didn’t tell him that). But now it’s been a week and I haven’t heard anything from him, no texts, no nothing. I think this is a little strange since he was the one who initially pursued me. Plus he’s friends with my friend so I didn’t think he would just ditch our plans. There is such a thing as politeness and I’m a little surprised that he hasn’t called me to let me know that he’s still sick, or busy, or whatever. So, I don’t know what to do if and when he calls. Should I go out with him? He’s already demonstrated that he can’t keep me in the loop.

Someone Cared! Woman Called 911 in Richmond Rape Case

Margarita Vargas, an 18-year-old woman from Richmond, CA (and a graduate of Richmond High) was the lone person who called 911 on the night a teenager was gang raped outside her high school while a homecoming party was still going on. It's alleged that at least 20 people watched and did nothing. Vargas says that her brother-in-law came home and told her he'd seen a woman being raped; it was Vargas who insisted they call the police.

It might seem pretty sad that we're applauding Vargas for doing what people should do, as she said, "without thinking twice," but you'd be surprised how often people are apathetic. So many people are saying, "What do you expect of Richmond?" but I can say, as someone who was grabbed on the streets of San Francisco in broad daylight and ignored when I asked for help - apathy happens everywhere, in all communities. (Just read about the bystander effect.)

Many years ago, I was walking down a busy street in a popular business district in a "good neighborhood" and a man grabbed me inappropriately. I had just bought coffee, so instinctively, I poured it in his face and grabbed onto him, hoping to get him arrested. As I grappled with him, trying to make eye contact with people walking by, riding by on their bikes, driving by, and yelling, "Someone help! This man attacked me!" no one did anything. Eventually, I couldn't hold the man any longer, and he got away, perhaps to assault someone else later. Helping out is rarer than you think, so kudos to Margarita, who even walked over to the school to make sure the police had arrived.

Beyonce Too Sexy For Malaysia

Beyonce won't be showing off her, um, leotards anytime soon in Malaysia. The singer has canceled her upcoming show in the predominately Muslim country because it has upset conservative Muslims who think her show is immoral.

Although Beyonce is not subject to the country's Sharia courts and cannot be tried for moral offenses, her sexy dances and costumes would nevertheless cause some outrage. The country's Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party called for the cancellation because it would promote "Western sexy performances." Well they're right about that - Beyonce definitely puts on a sexy show.

Considering a 32-year-old Malaysian model was recently sentenced to be caned for drinking a beer in a hotel nightclub, I'm not so surprised some people there aren't ready for Beyonce's jelly.

Now That's an Exotic Dancer!

These guys get more than they bargain for when they hire an exotic dancer for a bachelor party. Girlfriend here is what I think they call a "modern dancer." Her interpretive theme for the evening? Childbirth, child loss, and other libido-killing topics! Hey, it's "exotic" compared to the usual stripping and grinding! I bet his fiancée picked this one out.

Jon Stewart: Most Trusted News Person Among Neocons?

There's evidence that Jon Stewart is not just the most trusted person in news among laughing liberals. In a recent New York magazine article, neoconservative pundits says they too love the fake-news anchor for his intellectual curiosity.

Republican national-security hawk Cliff May was pleasantly surprised when he appeared as a guest on the program notorious for its cracks against the Republican party. In fact May said he had one of the best discussions on torture he'd ever had. And although former ambassador to the UN John Bolton probably holds a worldview opposite of Stewart's, he has warm feelings for the comedian, too. Bolton, who received a friendship bracelet from Stewart last time he was on, told New York:

He always gives you a chance to answer, which some people don't do. He's got his perspective, but he's been fair. In general, a lot of the media, especially on the left, has lost interest in debate and analysis. . . . Stewart fundamentally wants to talk about the issues.

It's amazing that a staunch conservative like John Bolton can come on The Daily Show and discuss how a military strike against Iran is a good thing just minutes after Jon Stewart presents the segment So You Think You Can Douche blasting Bolton's fellow Republicans. And it's all done on Comedy Central to boot!

Do You Like Surprises?

Last year, a friend and I planned on making a surprise trip to New York City to visit one of our best friends. We got super excited planning the trip, searching for tickets, and imagining the look on our friend's face when we arrived on her doorstep grinning ear to ear.

That is, until my friend's boyfriend asked us if we were out of our minds. "Think about it," he said. "Maybe she'll have other plans your visit will force her to cancel, maybe her apartment is messy, it's not a good time for her. . .or what if she just doesn't like surprises?"

He harshed our mellow, but I did think about it. I don't like unexpected guests, and as much as I like to think I'm fun - I'm actually not all that spontaneous unless I'm initiating a plan. Are you someone who appreciates surprise birthday parties, friends showing up on your doorstep unannounced, or surprises in general?

Girl Crush du Jour: Food Party's Thu Tran

Thu Tran is a woman after my own heart. She loves art, food, and the absurd and has combined all these passions into her surreal and fun Internet show, Food Party, which has been picked up by IFC (Independent Film Channel) and debuts tonight.

Food Party is described on her blog as "a mind-bending, non-reality cooking show with Thu Tran as your hostess, a cast of unruly puppets as culinary aides, and a cavalcade of fictitious celebrities as surprise dinner guests." On IFC, the show will run a short 10 minutes with no promises you'll actually get any cooking tips.

Tran, 27, graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art where she majored in glasswork. While a student there, she realized she loved both cooking with her roommate and making videos of their time in the kitchen. Collaborating with friends and her boyfriend, who helps her make the puppets on her show, this Pee-Wee's Playhouse of food shows took off, getting attention from a variety of websites before getting IFC's attention.

I can't wait to check out your show, Thu. And may you continue to let your freak flag fly!

Say What? Arnold Schwarzenegger Talks Smack About Rush

"Well I think that they say that Rush Limbaugh is the 800 lb. gorilla in the Republican Party. But I think that's mean-spirited to say that - because I think he's down to 650 lbs. I think one should be fair to him about this whole thing."

On CNN yesterday, the Republican governor of California sounded a bit like Rush-hater Keith Olbermann. Anyone think Arnold might switch parties soon? Who could be surprised? He's married to a Kennedy, after all.
