These days, most comedians swear like sailors and revel in shocking their audiences, but for standup comedy pioneers like George Carlin, who died yesterday of heart failure, swearing and shocking were not gratuitous. He wanted to shake up a hypocritical society and make people think about what "clean" language hides underneath it. (His famous "Seven Words You Can't Say on Television" routine got him arrested and went all the way to the Supreme Court, where they ruled that his language was "indecent" but not "obscene.") George Carlin will always be remembered as a comic genius. Here's a clip of George railing against euphemisms - a crank and a gadfly to the end. (Thanks, eBaum's World!)

Whether he's explaining the height-to-drunk-to-funny ratio (shorter and drunker is funnier), the breakdown of who owns a Hummer (hint: douchebags, dildos, and .01 percent of poets), and at what point he will not listen to a cute girl talk about her cat, Demetri really does make it look easy. He's like the male Ellen DeGeneres. He turns the everyday into comedy gold.

Dave Chappelle on the "Don't Taser Me, Bro" Incident

Dave Chappelle might be one of the funniest guys around. It's not often I can find a clip that will fly on GiggleSugar, but this one has it all. He turns a controversial story about that guy who got tasered for haranguing John Kerry into an uneasy joke. How? He just makes fun of everyone - the "Don't taser me, bro" guy, the taser-happy police, the impassive audience, and John Kerry, who Chappelle implies might have had something to do with it . . .

I love a man who isn't afraid to be a total spaz. Eric Schwartz, aka Smooth-E, aka Suburban Homeboy, tells his audience that no, he's not tech support, but yes, he can rap the Itsy Bitsy Spider song. Nebbishy guys rule!

Margaret Cho Standup: "Don't Lick My Eye"

In this clip, Margaret Cho reenacts an all-too familiar scene between a guy and his girlfriend. She's having a little trouble "breaking on through to the other side," if you know what I mean. How does he respond? By sulking and acting as if there's something wrong with her. And how does she respond? Just watch and see!

Dave Chappelle Standup

You'll never watch Sesame Street the same way after Dave Chappelle takes a crack at analyzing it. I suspect that something far stranger than Sesame Street has warped Chappelle's view of the world, but you gotta love the guy. (This is the mildest Chappelle clip I've been able to find, but it is Dave, so be prepared for foul language.)

To kick off our Best of 2007 coverage, I asked you guys to vote for your favorite female stand-up comic of the year. After all, it's still hard out there for a lady stand-up comic, but there is cause to celebrate the hilarious ladies who break through the glass ceiling and thrive. And the winner of the GiggleSugar readers' choice for best female stand-up comedian is . . .

Chelsea Handler! The veteran stand-up savant hit the big time this Summer, with her own late-night show on on E! called Chelsea Lately. Giggle regular Kathy Griffin came in a close second, and my pick has to be Kathy Griffin.

The Results Are In: Your Pick For Funniest Male Standup Comedian of 2008

You can't resist the cute funny dudes, and I don't blame you one bit. The results are in for GiggleSugar's best male stand-up comedian of 2008, and the honor goes to Demetri Martin! I am also a big fan his stand-up (for proof of his funny, give this vid a watch). Thumbs up, Demetri.
