The video footage caught the monstrous insect preying upon the space shuttle Atlantis on the launch pad the other day. No known victims have been reported. Who Looks Sexier in the Spider-Man Suit: Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire?

Earlier today we got our first peek at Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in the Spider-Man reboot, and it was only a matter of time before we compared Spider-Man 2.0 to Tobey Maguire's version. We won't know more about how well Garfield works as Peter Parker until 2012 (though hopefully the trailer will drop before that), but we can still judge purely on aesthetics. Garfield is definitely scrawnier than Maguire, though his suit is a bit grittier looking than the version we've grown used to. Who gets your vote for sexier Spider-Man?

Spider-Man 4 Is Dead, a New Younger Spidey Takes Its Place

Following recent script woes, Sony has announced via press release that it's pulling the plug on Spider-Man 4. In its place, they're developing a fresh storyline that takes the webslinger back to high school. The film will reportedly focus "on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises" (wait, I thought that was the first Spider-Man?!).

The studio is eying a Summer 2012 date, but the other big change: it's bringing in a brand-new cast and production team for the reboot. That means that Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi are both saying goodbye.

This swap really irks me. To salvage Spider-Man 4's problems by recasting just seems like a desperate attempt at some blockbuster-sized money. Sure, the younger Spidey will give the franchise new life, but I think I would've rather seen it die - at least for several years until the memory of Maguire's version is long gone (heaven help us if they cast a less adept teen heartthrob for the role). Don't you agree? Or are you excited for a makeover of the beloved superhero?

Breaking news: Sony has just posted the first photo of Andrew Garfield in the Spider-Man suit on the film's Facebook page! We already got a taste of Garfield's chemistry with Emma Stone on the set of the film, but here's the real deal. It's just a tease, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that he's looking pretty good. We officially can't wait to see more, but what say you?

The New Spider-Man Reboot Gets a Director!

Spider-Man 4 may be dead, but Sony is wasting no time in moving on to its replacement. Word is the studio has hired (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb to orchestrate the first film in the new saga - as well as two additional movies based around the younger Peter Parker and his spandexed alter ego. The news may seem surprising for a relative newcomer to feature film, but Webb supposedly has two things in his favor: Columbia's chairman Amy Pascal likes him, and he comes with a much cheaper price tag than veteran Sam Raimi.

I was against a Spider-Man update before, but things just got interesting. Webb took a ton of lighthearted liberties with Summer, so I'm hoping his younger sensibility and creativity can breathe some life into the old franchise. Let's just hope we've seen the last of those Peter Parker dance sequences.

Emma Stone to Get Caught in Spider-Man's Web

UPDATE: Columbia Pictures has announced that Stone will actually play Gwen Stacy, not Mary Jane Watson.

I hope Andrew Garfield is ready to be the face of a franchise, because Sony certainly believes that the upcoming Spider-Man reboot will go beyond one film. The studio is already lining up Emma Stone to play Mary Jane Watson, a love interest for Peter Parker that probably won't materialize until after the first installment. Back in August we looked at the actresses who are in the running to play Gwen Stacy, Peter's first love, and that role is still up for grabs.

I'm excited to see how Stone's Mary Jane will compare with others we've seen before. She's already got the fiery hair (which is a step up from towheaded Kirsten Dunst), but she's usually more of the sassy girl-next-door than damsel in distress. Can you see her in the role - and more important - opposite Andrew Garfield?
