You'd think that the indigestion and stomach upset that accompanies eating Spam canned luncheon meat would be an adequate souvenir of your Spam experience. But the folks at Hormel thought that their customers would like a more constant reminder by enticing them to wear Spam sweatshirts and accessories and using Spam kitchen gadgets from the Spam catalog. I'm guessing from the fried, poofy perms and mom jeans that this is late '80s, early '90s. The golden age of Spam, perhaps?

Inbox Law and Order: Spam AOL, Get 30 Months In Prison

A New York spam aficionado just got 30 months in jail for spamming AOL subscribers. He must also pay the company $180,000. Too bad nobody ever got locked up for mailing all those AOL CD-ROMs.

The spammer, 27-year-old Adam Vitale, circumvented AOL's spam filter and spammed AOL's 1.2 million subscribers on behalf of a government informant. Vitale, who has also been accused of running a Craigslist prostitution ring, had made a deal with the informant to send out junk emails advertising software in exchange for 50 percent of the software's profits.

I just signed in to my ancient AOL account to do some research and found 94 emails, aka my inbox, I would classify as spam, all received in the last month (see image). So I'm thinking it can't be that hard to crack the filter. Either way, as Vitale received his spamming sentence, the federal judge told him that "spamming is serious criminal conduct." Do you agree? Was a two-and-a-half-year sentence fair?

Given the whole "finger in the chili" scare at Wendy's a while back, is this really the best way to advertise a Spam recipe contest? I mean, Spam (aka "loaf 'o trans fats") already doesn't have the best reputation for its, uh, nutritional properties.

It's not often that I read spam email, but when the header is "Want back your erection?" I have to investigate. How do I do that? Well, according to this blooper-filled spam email, all I have to do is "drink Viagra Professional," which "all doctors on (sic) all over the world recommend" before sexual contact. When it "comes into your organism, she helps your penis to get hard by relaxing the smooth muscle of the blood vessels." She? "Solve self!" Huh? I wish the link worked. It was only $4.11. (I wonder if these guys have anything to do with this...)

I take it he's not swayed by the porn spam he gets. He's too busy analyzing it. First, he proofreads for typos. Then he muses on which is creepier, just outright saying what the sex act is in crude language, or creating cutesy euphemisms. (I vote for creepy euphemisms.)

I just checked my email today and, naturally, I received spam. Although I didn't open it up, the spam name made me laugh out loud. It was from Romaine Huckabone. He just wanted to say, "Hi." I'm sure he also wanted to sell me some Viagra, Soma pills, or some penis enlargement product. (Thanks, Romaine, I'm good.) Or maybe he's friends with Tony E. Grubbs, who is concerned that I need to "Halt credit harassment now." Here are some other people I don't know who are concerned for my well-being. Do You Read or Forward Political Emails? Super or Spam?

What's viral, anonymous, and will find you when you're least expecting it? Nope, it's not the clap, it's those political or activist email forwards. You know, the ones that originate from points unknown, to share information (?) or opinions with every Tom, Dick, and Inbox. Here's one that crossed my Spam Filter this week:

Subject: Midwest Flooding

As you watch the flooding in the Midwest, have you noticed that there are no farmers running around with stolen plasma TVs or holding stolen liquor over their heads? I heard a dimwit talking head on CNN yesterday say that this reminded him of New Orleans. How? Outside of being flooded the similarity stops there. There is no looting, no people wandering the streets looking for meanness. . . there is not one damn thing, other than water, that is similar to New Orleans. The actions of the people of Des Moines only makes the actions of the people of New Orleans look like what it was. . . people of several generations of dependency on government unable to depend upon themselves to save themselves. That is what always happens when the government bails folks out for generation after generation!

It relays an opinion, to be sure - but are these forwarded email missives taken as fact - and are they beneficial? They're a double-edged sword: by sending one on, you're assuming that the recipient shares your views while simultaneously espousing them as your own. Though they are a way to share information and start a dialogue. Do you forward them on?
