New York Weighs Tax on Non-Diet Soda

Tough times have hit state governments, and as a result New York's Gov. Paterson plans to put his state's budget on a diet by cutting funding of education and health care. But he's also hoping lean measures can raise money - the governor wants to tax non-diet soda, that he claims will bring in $404 million for the state.

Other revenue-raising ideas include: requiring new license plates, reinstating sales tax on clothing purchases, and requiring Indian retailers to collect taxes on sales to non-Indians. Paterson has to get creative if he wants to reduce the $12.5 billion state budget deficit.

If New York is going to tax soda, should it just go all the way and tax regular and diet?

With flavors like "Pure McCain Cola, "Yes We Can" Cola, and still hanging on with "Capitol Hillary" and "Ron Paul Revolution" Cola, every bottle purchased racks up a vote for the candidate - besides being a pretty refreshing campaign momento.

A six-pack will run you $15 and while you're at their website you can pick up info on each candidate courtesy of Politifact.com. Oh, and for those counting at home, Obama is currently ahead in this Cola War.

His mom wants to know who drank all the orange soda and this little punk looks her straight in the eyes, smiles, and pins the blame on his brother. Don't mind the orange mustache he happens to be wearing-- it means nothing. Sure, he may have taken a sip or two from the bottle, but he definitely didn't "inhale."

Has Big Brother Gone Too Far? US Wants Cell Phones & Soda

When it comes to letting the government watch out for public safety, some things are off-limits for Americans. A new survey shows that while 62 percent of US adults think there should be a national ban on smoking in public locations, only 38 percent support a ban on cell-phone use while driving, and 70 percent oppose a tax on nondiet soda.

Despite the fact that smoking, driving distractions, and soda all pose health risks, Americans seem to single out smoking as a vice not protected from government control. And while drinking soda has a personal impact, driving on a cell phone and smoking both pose risks to innocent neighbors. Perhaps the distinction has something to do with the fact that the majority of Americans do not smoke, while many people do drive and drink soda.

Many things could be (and are) regulated in the name of public and personal safety. So what do you think makes Americans all right with banning smoking in public, but not other dangerous activities?

Oh, answer from the heavens to the existential question that's plagued mankind since the dawn of liquid, what, oh what, in all that is holy-regional-specificity do we call that most bubbly of beverages? Oh, map of the ages, slake my thirst for knowledge!

So yeah. Soda or Pop - or in a crazy Southern specialness that can't at all come from the fact that Coke is based there, Coke. What do you call it? This map will save you from ever having that conversation again - though by all means use it as an icebreaker and then pop them (heh.) with your fizzy drink fountain of knowledge. Maps. Ah, refreshing.

By now, we've all seen the vid of a bird taking a surprise crap on a reporter in the middle of a live news broadcast. It was the talk of the net last week, but there's a new development in the story. Was this really the accident it seemed to be, or was it the work of a couple of marketing gurus? The makers of "Frumondah soda" are taking all the cred for this "real fake thing that sells a real product," and they have the full commercial to prove it.

Advertising from the '60s has a bad rap for always being targeted to men. Mad Men proved this last Sunday when Peggy says a beautiful woman throwing herself at a camera is not going to sell diet soda to its audience - women. Don replies, you know how this works: men want her, so women want to be her.

But this ad is really for the ladies! "Take me along - if you love me!" badgers the jingle while housewives magically change from dowdy house dresses to fun, stewardess-like ones. And it doesn't just sell a dream, it sells a discount. "If you take your wife along on United," the commercial says, "we'll give you up to one-third off her fare." It's like she's a child.
