Flashback: Paper Dolls

Like Manimal one year before it, Paper Dolls lasted only two months - from September 1984 to December 1984. A prime-time soap opera set around a fictional modeling agency, the show (called Karussell der Puppen in Germany!) starred Lloyd Bridges, Morgan Fairchild, Mimi Rogers, and introduced Nicollette Sheridan. With a trailer this awesome, I wonder why it did so badly! (Bonus info: Three of the cast members went on to do Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Hahaha!)

He made a name for himself as a Grammy-winning rapper, took the English language by storm (for shizzle!), and then went the reality TV route to show off his domestic chops. He's a versatile dude, but who would've ever seen soap operas in Snoop's future? Not only is he doing the acting and performing thang on two episodes of One Life to Live (aired today and yesterday), he also recorded a new theme song to introduce these shows. characters who have special powers. I've never been a fan of soaps, but when

I thought soap operas were in the business of airing backstabbing drama and torrid love affairs, not reviving classic Disney cartoon plots. A show must really be fishing for a new development when the writers have to drag The Little Mermaid into the storyline. (But have no fear, all the bad acting is still here!)

Did you know that some of your favorite hot celebrities got their start on a soap opera? Although they are completely unrealistic, I have to admit that when I'm home sick, I get completely addicted! Since these characters spend more time in the bedroom than anywhere else, it's no wonder they're so easy on the eyes. I know every actor says filming a sex scene isn't all it's cracked up to be, but I'm not buying it so ladies, tell me, what ex-soap opera hottie would you want to join you to film a sex scene?

Cambridge Wants Soap Opera To Make It School of the People

Instead of using fancy brochures and an elitist image to attract students, Cambridge University is pitching the campus to Britain's top three soap operas as its latest marketing campaign.

Cambridge's spokesman said:

We're very keen to attract the brightest and best students regardless of their background. One of the better ways of communicating directly with potential students is to talk to them through the soaps and other programs they watch.

The British government, which funds both Cambridge and Oxford, has set a goal that half of all Britain's young people will attend college by 2010. With that mission, even the elite schools are targeting students from disadvantaged families. Officials hope that when the hard-trodden characters from EastEnders or Coronation Street enroll at Cambridge, all viewers will begin to picture themselves there, too. American schools adopt less salacious measures to attract a diverse student body - families making under $60,000 a year receive free tuition at Harvard. Do you think universities can have a diverse set of students, while keeping an elitist image?

Introducing: Horrible People, a Soap Opera

Unless you speak French, you will have no idea what's going on at the beginning of this fabulous spoof of soap operas (don't they already kinda spoof themselves?), but keep with it and you will be happy you did. There's the requisite grande dame who wants to hire someone to off her son -"a pus-infected wound of a human being who stinks of failure and misery" - and foreigners who, for a change of pace, aren't Australian. The problem is, the foreigners speak French, which makes for some awkward and ridiculous cross-translation subtitles. Redonk. I can't wait for the conclusion next week! I wish I'd watched these from the beginning, but you can watch them all here if you want to catch up before the finale!

Do Tell: What's the Sexiest Foreign Accent?

Maybe we can blame the foreign exchange students in high school or the soap operas we watched that featured mysterious foreigners whose arrival shook up small towns like the fictional Port Charles. Whatever the cause, a lot of chicks love a foreign accent.

Well, the results of a worldwide poll asking 5,000 women who has the sexiest accent have yielded an answer: the Irish. For decades, French men held the title. (Tant pis, mes amis!) The Irish and their sexy (if indecipherable) lilts were followed by the accents of Italian, Scottish, French and Australian men, in that order. (Americans were in tenth place.)
