As much as I love Chloe Sevigny's crazy style, I think she's responsible not only for some ugly '80s fashions we're seeing on hipsters everywhere, but even worse, the smug attitudes these folks have about their oh-so-daring fashion forwardness. (Vice Magazine plays a big part in this phenomenon, too.) And thus is born, today's Word of the Day:

Smugly \smug-ly\: The state of being both poorly dressed and arrogant about one's purported fashion-forwardness.

Do You Know Anyone Like The Goode Family?

An extremely politically correct cartoon-family is coming to a television near you. Mike Judge of King of the Hill and Beavis and Butt-head fame has created a new show - The Goode Family - which premiers on ABC tonight.

The Goodes are many shades of green. They use reusable shopping bags (not the ones made in sweat shops), drive hybrid cars, recycle, and ask themselves: what would Al Gore do? In addition to being environmentally conscious, they're also socially aware: they're vegans, have a dog named Che, and they even adopted a little boy from Africa. (Once they adopted Ubuntu, they found out he was actually born to white Afrikaans parents in South Africa. They still have him wear traditional African dress.)

The premise sort of reminds me of the South Park episode all about smug people in San Francisco. In that episode, the "smug" (smog) from preachy, hybrid car owners ends up causing an environmental disaster. Despite the similarities in using progressives as their targets, The Good Family does treat the earnest clan a little kinder than South Park would, making it apparent that the characters have genuine intentions.

Some diabolical entrepreneurs over at Cap-sac must have figured that in order to bring back the hideous '90s style fanny pack, it would need an update. Their solution? A fanny pack you wear on your head - a Cap-sac. Some people live for smugly, ironic fashions. What about you?

Defending Her Title: It's Dr. Jill Biden to All of Us

Michelle Obama may get all the attention, but there's one thing that stands out about Jill Biden. Doctor always precedes her name.

I've actually thought about the title at little to moderate length before - certainly enough to be embarrassed! She has a PhD in education, so shouldn't she be Jill Biden, PhD? No, that would sound weird. I always called my college professors Dr. - Even the art ones! So maybe it's not that weird. But Michelle Obama is a lawyer, and we don't call her Attorney or Michelle Obama Esquire. Though the latter suits her.

In the end, Jill Biden is called Dr. Jill Biden because she asks to be. Joe Biden liked to joke on the campaign trail that she went back to school at 55 because she was sick of seeing mail addressed to Sen. and Mrs. Biden. Ugh. Say it ain't so Joe!

The request may actually serve a purpose in academia, where sexism exists in more than just the books. A professor at University of Southern California's Center For Education said that male academics are more likely to be called doctor by colleagues while women are often addressed by their first names.

So what is Dr. Biden's request? Accurate? Smug? Feminist? Or totally irrelevant?

Imagine sitting down at a computer to read your newspaper? This 1981 evening newscast did. They saw the future of newspapers but weren't too scared! "It takes over two hours to receive the entire text of the newspaper over the phone, and with an hourly use charge of $5, the new telepaper (ed. telepaper?) won't be much competition for the 20 cent street edition," the anchorwoman smugly said. Too bad they forgot to imagine watching the evening news from a computer!

Where Do You Stand? Comparisons With a Friend's Love Life

I value my friends' opinions very much, and I often turn to them when I’m feeling down. But no matter how much I respect them as individuals, I have always tried to avoid the habit of comparing my love life to theirs. Not only do I not want admiration to lead to jealousy, but I also don’t want to find myself feeling smug about an issue they're dealing with. However, I’m sure some people use a comparison with their friends to get them motivated or avoid making a similar mistake. What about you? Where do you stand when it comes to making comparisons between your and your friends’ romantic lives?

Before Ben Stiller made it big-time and developed that sheen of smugness that's on so many successful funny men in Hollywood (you know who you are!), he was being hilarious on The Ben Stiller Show. I am so glad I found this gem, because it makes fun of a dude I am perversely fascinated with: motivational speaker Tony Robbins. I used to love coming home from a night of drinking, stuffing my face with junk food, only to find that the only thing on television was this Sasquatch of a man with blinding white teeth and a disturbingly deep baritone telling me how to be successful and unleash the winner within. Ha! (Bonus: David Cassidy of The Partridge Family introduces "Tony Bobbins.")
